Henri reacted with pure glee, cheeping loudly and leaping up to catch the seeds as they flew through the air. She giggled and gave him further praises. She smiled at Henri as she let him play for a few minutes, letting the lesson sink in. Then, she called across the grasses. “Hey!” No response. “Over here!” No response- good, that’s what she was hoping for. Then, the test- “Henri!” Sure enough, she saw a bright read head immediately pop up from the grass, making her snort with laughter. He rushed over, bobbing and weaving through the waving plants before skidding to a halt at his owner’s feet. “Good boy!” She praised, and stroked his head. She needed him to understand he wouldn’t always get a treat, but he still needed to listen- But he seemed to still appreciate the effort. She didn’t need him getting fat on seeds, after all.

Fiera had a couple other basic tricks on her list for Henri. These ones weren’t exactly ones that would wow the crowd, but they were necessary for teaching the ones that would. First of all, Henri was a quick little bugger. It was necessary to get him to stay in one spot, but also to get him to come back to her whenever he wandered off. It was the latter trick that was her goal right now. Henri was currently curled up on the log, basking in the summer sunlight. Fiera was somewhat envious- she knew jolly birds were a wintry species. She bet that summer sunlight felt amazing on his fur. She almost felt bad having to wake him up- the key word there being “almost”, of course, Fiera didn’t feel truly bad about a lot of things. She stood about twenty feet away and cupped her hands to her mouth.

“Henri!” She shouted, her voice echoing across the lawn. Henri rolled over, but didn’t get up. Fiera huffed and called his name again. Finally, he raised his head, looking at her lazily. “Come!” She called. He rolled right back over, of course. Which made sense- she wasn’t offering a treat, and he had no way of knowing what the word meant. Hopefully it would get it in his head though, and set the stage for learning to come. She knew she couldn’t teach him with words alone however, and got out her jar of treats, stuffed full of his favorite type of fat, tasty seeds. She made sure the jar was closed tight, lifted it up, and shook it a couple times. The distinctive sound of the treat jar was more than enough to get Henri to wake up, He stood up, stretched, and started to walk over.

“Good boy, Henri!” Fiera cooed at the jolly bird as he meandered his way over to her. It was slow, but steady. “Come!” She kept repeating as he walked. He tried to sit down again halfway through, but she shook the jar of seeds some more to encourage him. Henri obliged her, dragging himself the rest of the way to Fiera. “Atta boy!” She said when he was finally at her feet. “Good come!” She finally popped open the jar, and suddenly Henri seemed a lot more awake, pawing at her pant legs and chirping loudly. She tossed a couple to him, and he was more than happy to take care of them for her. While he picked his treat out of the grass, Fiera began to back up again, this time in the opposite direction. Time to try again, now that Henri knew that good effort would get him fed.

She stopped again, up against an old oak tree, grass flowing gently against its trunk. Henri has just finished his treats, and was now looking around for where his owner went. “Henri!” She shouted, and he turned himself around in the correct direction. “Come!” She called, fingers crossed. Instead... he just sat down. Fiera sighed- looked like he still wasn’t ready to do that trick without treats yet. She shook the treat jar again and sure enough, he came for its siren call. All the while, Fiera shouted “Come!” To make sure he wasn’t just associating the trick with the sound of the jar. Finally, he reached her, and she begrudgingly gave him some treats. He had the idea of ‘come’ down, it was now just a matter of getting the jolly bird to do it on command, without the allure of treats. Hopefully she wouldn’t have to work too much longer- Henri was a fast learner.

As Henri worked, Fiera backed away one more time. Well, hopefully one more time. Henri was a fast learner, but she supposed anything could go wrong. He eventually finished, licking crumbs off his beak, looking over at her with his black, doll-like eyes. Yes, he was definitely perfect for the cute contest. Now- the moment of truth. “Henri!” She said, and he sat down and straightened his back, as if coming to attention. “Come!” She shouted, and bit her lip. There was a moments hesitation- he tilted his head one way, and then the other, before standing up slowly and starting to trot over to her. Fiera breathed a sigh of relief. He had gotten it! She squatted down and held her arms open, cooing encouraging phrases, and he only picked up the pace. Soon, he was running into her arms and she caught him, planting kisses on his fuzzy head. Another truck down!

Another hour, another trick to teach. Fiera felt like she was on a roll today, and Henri seemed plenty enthusiastic still. That was good- it was hard to teach of the pet was tired, and this next trick was never one that pets liked learning. It was especially difficult for younger pets, full of youthful vigor and...well, she doubted that animals could have “disrespect for authority”, but if they could she could name several that she had seen it in. Thankfully, Henri was a fair bit more friendly than the sarane hatchling she was training before that had given her so much difficulty. And he was SIGNIFICANTLY less sharp, No, her safety was certainly the last thing she had to worry about while training the jolly bird, but her sanity was a different matter, as she watched him tear around in circles, chasing his own tail.

“Henri...sweetie...stop that, please, you’re making me dizzy.” She said hesitantly. Henri simply chirped in defiance instead, and started running around the other way. Fiera took a deep breath. Okay then. She reached down to pick him up- and he simply scampered away, singing a melody that could be interpreted as mocking. Well if that’s how he was going to play it... “Henri, no! Stay!” She shouted, pointing at him. Then she realized- ah right, she hadn’t taught him either of those yet. Well, she supposed that decided what to teach him next. She sat next to a stump, waiting to see if Henri would calm down. He didn’t of course, so she popped open the treat jar full of seeds. Now THAT got his attention. She kept most in her hand where he couldn’t get at them, but one she placed on the stump.

The jolly bird immediately rushed over, no doubt expecting to scarf down some tasty treats today, but Fiera slapped her hand down over it just in time. “No.” She commanded firmly. Henri seemed taken aback, unfamiliar with her tone- he didn’t get to eat a treat? What was the meaning of this? She waited a moment while he seemed to mull it over, then slowly drew her hand away. “...Good boy, Henri. Good no.” She said. Henri seemed to hesitate for a moment before he cheeped once and pecked at the seed, quickly destroying the outer coating and gobbling the goodies inside. Fiera nodded- that was a good start. He seemed to be thinking about it. She’d just have to keep working. She brought another seed from her palm to pinched between two fingers, and gently set it down on the stump, where Henri could see. “Henri...no.” She said, pointing at the seed.

He paused for a moment, considering... and then lunged for the seed. Fiera managed to snap her hand over it just in time. “Henri, NO.” She scolded. Henri recoiled even further now. On some level, she felt bad- he was just a baby and she felt bad about yelling at him. But on the other hand, he needed to learn this now to avoid a lot of problems later. A well disciplined pet was a safe pet that wasn’t going to run off a cliff because they didn’t know the meaning of “no”. He peered at her hand for a moment, still unsure, before sitting down. Fiera sighed, satisfied, and lifted her hand up a moment later. “Atta boy Henri, good “no”.” She said. Notably, he didn’t fall upon it right away- he only went to eat the treat once she gave him praise. Now that was a good sign.

She felt like Henri was starting to really get it. She had to be a bit harsh, but things were paying off. Henri seemed to be peeking up as well- perhaps he thought it was a game? She wasn’t about to dissuade him of the notion she thought as she got another seed out of her hand. Hopefully, it would make all this go a bit easier. She brushed off the shards of the old seeds, and Henri moved as if to chase them. He was brought back to attention however by Fiera putting a new seed down. She pointed at it and spoke carefully. “Henri? No.” She watched him like a hawk...but he didn’t move. It sure looked like he wanted to, fidgeting and adjusting his position sitting on the ground, but much to her delight, he obeyed the order. She laughed, delighted. “Good boy, Henri!” Go ahead! And sure enough, he fell upon it- but only after being given permission first.

Fiera pat Henri, her jolly bird, on the head. He had been doing very well today, and she only had one last basic trick to teach him- for now, at least. She had gone through his name, come, and no, and now it was time for the last one- stay. He had been perfectly amiable so far, and it looked like that wasn’t changing any time soon. He was still bursting with energy, running circles around her both metaphorically and literally. Even though she was feeling a little tired, she appreciated the enthusiasm. She watched amusedly as he broke off from his circles to dart through copses of tall grass, leaping over the long skinny leaves. He was quite fun for her to watch, but...Still, she had to admit, it would be nice to get this boy to sit still for a little bit, if just so she could get a brush through his fur someday.

She tried waiting for Henri to come close before she ordered him around, but he seemed to have no intention of stopping, throwing himself through bunches of grass and launching himself off of tree stumps. She wondered amusedly if she should be entering him in a racing competition instead of a cuteness contest. She gave him another minute to wear himself out before getting down to brass tacks. “Henri, come!” She said, while fiddling around in her bag. He skidded yo a stop, and then started walking toward her hesitantly, “That’s right, party’s over.” She said amusedly, drawing out her training tool. It was a length of yarn, about 5 feet long, with a loop st one end. She had measured it carefully- it was small enough that he couldn’t get out, soft enough that he wouldn’t hurt himself, but not so right that he’d choke.

She tied one end around a rock laying nearby. It wasn’t a huge rock- she could easily lift it after all. But for a creature Henri’s size, he’d have a better chance moving a mountain. The other end she looped around Henri’s head. At first it was a struggle, trying to get the wiggly creature to hold still, but all it took was a fist full of seeds to distract him long enough to put it on. He hardly seemed to notice it at first, but the impromptu leash’s presence became clear to him the minute he tried to run off again. Still, he took it in stride, sitting down again and allowing Fiera to get his attention for training. She held up a seed, and he immediately stood up for it. “No.” She said softly, pointing at him. He recoiled a bit, confused, “Stay.” She said, backing away.

Henri strained at the lead but predictably was forced to stay in one spot. Thankfully, this was just what Fiera wanted. After a few moments of standing a few feet away, she approached again, praising him. “Good stay! Here’s your treat!” She said, tossing him a couple seeds, he hobbled them up excitedly before sitting back up, eager for more. She smiled- she could do that. But only if he was good, of course. She backed away again, holding up another seed. “Stay...” she said reassuringly. The jolly bird stood up again, but didn’t strain as much as before. Something seemed to be clicking, if slowly. “Stay...stay... good boy!” She finished, breaking the tension. He popped back up, catching the seed in the air as she threw it. She gave it one last try, and he did even better that time, even sitting down before she threw it to him.
