Fiera palmed another piece of meat, directly in Fern's line of sight, and then reached for another paw. "Good girl..." she comforted, stretching the leg out. Fern whined, stretching her neck out towards the treat, but ignored her leg. Fiera dropped it. "Good! Now, stay." She said, glad she had taught Fern that trick already. Fern whined, shifting the leg just a bit. "No! Stay." Fern shifted the leg back where it was. After a moment, Fiera dropped the treat. "Good girl, Fern." She confirmed. Being able to move Fern's limbs around and getting her to stay like that would also be useful. Granted, she couldn't think of any uses right now, but she was sure people taught dogs to do this for a reason. A few more tries later, and Fiera was able to get Fern to tolerate being placed in a variety of positions. She even let the humanish roll her over, showing her belly!

They were really getting somewhere! There was only a couple things Fiera had to get Fern to tolerate now, she thought. First was the toes- she knew a lot of creatures were rather picky about their feet, as much as or more then their faces. Thankfully, she had already gotten Fern somewhat used to it by grabbing her paws. Now though, she focused on the paws specifically- pressing on them to get her to spread her toes, and fiddling with each sharp claw. With any luck, this would make it a LOT easier to trim the rakai's nails. Or, even better, teach her some attacks involving her claws. Now wouldn't that be a sight to see! Fern whined slightly, but Fiera kept her calm with repetitive "Shh, shh." noises and decreasing amounts of meat. By this point, each scrap Fern was given was no bigger than the size of a fingernail. Soon, Fiera knew she wouldn't have to use meat at all.

Fiera then gave Fern one last barrage of tests. Lifting tails, moving legs, getting her to pose and stay there. It was quite easy by now, though Fern's tail kept whipping around- by this point, the rakai sarane likely thought it was a game of sorts. Fiera was able to touch her face and ears with little trouble, though she still closed her eyes when her hands came near. That was understandable, it was reflex, not decision. Opening Fern's mouth to examine her teeth was easy enough, though Fiera was careful to immediately wash her hands off with some water each time. She didn't want to get chemical burns today, no ma'am. Finally, she just started touching her in weird spots, rubbing her fur the wrong way, lifting scales and pulling tails. Nothing painful of course, just uncomfortable, which was the point of the exercise. By this point though, Fern took it all in stride. What a good girl.

The sun was high in the sky now, and were it not for Fiera having brought plenty of cold water, would likely be too blistering to train. But Fiera had a job to do, and she had finally taught Fern enough basic tricks to get to it. It was finally time to teach the rakai sarane some fighting moves. Something about teaching pets to fight each other felt strange, but she had been told that it was traditional here. Apparently, the amount of science and magic floating around in this city meant that creatures barely ever died in a fight. Even if they did, there were whispers that they could be brought back. So with that in mind, Fiera felt that it would be best to teach her pets to fight, if just for self defense. And first on the list was teaching her rakai "rend". To this effect, she had dragged a large log into the clearing, and kept her cooler full of treats nearby. Fiera: 1 Fern: Lv. 7.1 /Lo 9.1 (Rend 1)

The cooler full of meat was set down quite close to the log, immediately attracting Fern's attention. She trotted over to the log, and Fiera stood next to it, ready to go. She reached down and carefully grasped one of Fern's feet. Thankfully, she had been taught to tolerate bits of her being grabbed, and the action only warranted the wagging of her tail slowing to a stop. Her attention, at least, was piqued. "Ok, Fern- rend." She said, emphasizing the last word while scraping Fern's claws along the bark of the log. The rakai tilted her head, a bit confused at the action. She repeated this a couple times, and then stood up. "Ok, now you try!" Fiera said brightly. "Fern, rend!" She commanded, pointing at the log. Fern just looked at her. Ah. Fiera bit her lip and supposed she'd have to try a little harder than that.

Fiera sat behind the log, in front of Fern. Getting on her knees, she leaned over and grabbed Fern's paw again, placing it on the bark. "Rend." She said, moving it downward. Hopefully she'd start getting the idea soon- Fiera wasn't sure how else to explain it. Especially not to a dog. She finally released Fern's paw, and the rakai set it back down on the ground. Fiera pointed once more at the log. "Fern, rend." She said. Fern lifted her paw up- and put it back down. Fiera resisted the urge to groan with annoyance. It wasn't ideal, but at least it was different. She could work with this- it might be slow going, but at least it proved that Fern was trying to understand. She tried again. "Rend." Fern's paw came up, waved around in the air some, and went back down. Right. Fiera's new goal: get paw on log.

Ok. Let's try this again, one more time. Fiera realized that this was going a lot slower than the other tricks she had been trying to teach. She had to admit though, this one was a lot more difficult too. The others were just stay there or let me touch you. For this one, she not only had to convince Fern to touch an object, but apply significant force to it. To start, she supposed it was best to just get Fern to "Touch. The log." territory. So, once again, she reached over the log and grabbed Fern's paw, much to the rakai sarane's consternation. She placed it on the top of the log, dragged it to the bottom. "Rend." She stated, before releasing Fern's foot. "Ready?" She said, sincerely hoping Fern was. "Fern, rend!" Fern lifted her paw... and touched it down on the log, dragging it downward gently.

"Yes!" Fiera cried out, pumping her fists in the air. "Good girl, Fern!" She said, digging through the cooler. She pulled out one small chunk of meat, and Fern instantly stood back up, tail wagging madly. "That's right, you did it right! Now you get a treat!" Fiera said, tossing the meat up. Fern leapt up onto her hind legs, jaws snapping over the meat in midair. An impressive sight, Fiera couldn't help but mentally jot down to teach her "crunch" later in the day. Soon, Fern had finished eating, and seemed to have calmed down a bit, though her tail still waved around in slow wags. A connection had been made, Fiera could tell. "Are you ready for the next step?" She said, mostly to herself, as Fern only tilted her head curiously. "Let's try it again, one more time. Fern, rend!" She commanded, and once again, Fern patted her paw down on the log.

As the Fern's furry green foot touched down, Fiera grabbed it again, pressing it down harder into the bark. "Fern, REND." She emphasized. Bits of bark started to chip off, but Fern immediately drew her foot back. Fiera sighed. Did she hurt her somehow? Wouldn't she yelp if she was hurt? Man, training things that couldn't talk back was difficult. "Fern, rend!" She tried again. Fern placed her foot back on, this time tapping it twice. Not...quite what she wanted, but at least Fern was trying something new. Fiera tossed her a tiny bit of meat for the good effort. Again, she tried grabbing the foot, raking it down the bark as hard as she dared push it. Fern whined and pulled her paw back. Fiera rubbed a temple. She knew Fern was a canine (sort of- she was part sarane.), not a feline, but her claws were still sharp.

If her claws were sharp then she should, reasonably, be able to slash things, right? She was a predator, it was in her blood. After all, how else did they catch things in the wil- ah. Yes, Fiera supposed that was an issue. None of these creatures WERE wild, were they. Yes, they could survive in theory, but in practice it was usually a different story. Sure, the various beasts looked like fearsome monsters, but could they actually thrive in a survival scenario? Fiera wasn't sure. They could certainly fight though, she had seen a few videos of the tournaments that were held here. And if those creatures could fight, then maybe Fern could be convinced to as well. Even though she didn't seem to get it right now. Fiera took a swig of water, quenching the thirst drummed up both by the work and the heat. Time to get back to work.

Let's try this one more time. Fiera gripped Fern's paw, firmly but gently, pressing it against the tree. "Rend!" She said, shoving it downward. Fern didn't struggle this time, but didn't seem to lean into the movement either. Fiera supposed that that was progress? It was hard to say until Fern had the opportunity to do it on her own, though. "Ready Fern? Rend!" She said, once Fern had drawn her paw back all the way. The rakai sarane looked at her, the log, and then smacked it with a paw. Finally! Fiera breathed a sigh of relief. Instead of just tapping the log like before, that was closer to a slap- and, of course, closer to what Fiera was looking for. Was it a lethal slash? Not by any meaning of the word, no. But it was a definite movement in the right direction. Fiera was quick to reward Fern with kind words and fresh meat.

Satisfied, Fiera knew to keep working at it. She understood now that she wasn't just touching the log, she was slapping it- and it was time to make her put more force into it. Or at least a better angle. "Fern," she said, grabbing her paw. "Rend." She continued, pushing the paw down the log. When she released it, Fern took her foot right back. She knew the drill already, even if she didn't entirely understand what Fiera wanted. Fiera tapped her finger on the spot again. Like a good dog, Fern didn't do anything until told to. "Rend!" Fiera said, leaning away from the spot. Once again, Fern touched the area, then dragged her foot down. Hmm. Fiera supposed that was pretty good, but there was no real force behind it. She wondered how to get Fern to hit it harder. Maybe an example?

Fiera gently scootched Fern out of the way, nudging her with a foot. This was probably going to hurt a bit, but with any luck Fern would get the idea. She backed up, the fel rakai watching her, and then lunged forward, scratching the log with her hand while shouting "Rend!". Chips of bark flew off, dislodged by her nails. As Fiera backed away, Fern pushed by her legs to sniff the new bare spot. While she was occupied, Fiera clutched her hand. Holy crap that hurt. Fiera might have been a humanish, but her nails, while sharp and less likely to break than a standard person's, were still anatomically more like human fingernails than anything else. Her palm stung, and her nails felt like they had nearly been ripped off. Thankfully she hadn't cut herself open, but she really, REALLY hoped Fern got the idea there. That would be difficult to do twice.

Hand still stinging, Fiera directed Fern to the log again. Hopefully she had a better idea of what Fiera wanted of her now. If not, Fiera would have to demonstrate again and well... while she did bring a first aid kit, she was really hoping she wouldn't have to use it today. Then again, she wasn't sure what she was expecting, teaching a venomous dragon dog how to fight. Frankly, she should have packed two first aid kits. After getting the rakai sarane positioned, Fiera pointed at the log. "Rend!" She ordered. Unlike before, Fern leaned forward with more vigor, slicing off a few chips of bark, right next to Fiera's bare spot. Yes! That was more like it! "Good girl, Fern!" Fiera praised, practically prancing over to the cooler. She popped it over, and tossed Fern an even bigger chunk of meat then before- she had earned it, after all!

Fiera rubbed her hands together- partially out of scheming, and partially because her hand still hurt from scratching a log. Ow. It looked like she was finally getting somewhere! Instead of just touching a log, she was getting actual effort from Fern. The log actually looked like it was missing some pieces now, instead of the gentle stroking it got from the pair's earlier efforts. Granted, it wouldn't be enough to take down foes in the arena, but they were getting there. Fern looked even more excited, having been given a bigger chunk of meat. Fiera wondered... could she create a pattern out of that? She decided to try it out. "Rend!" She commanded again, pointing at the log. Fern rushed forward, slashing the spot again and leaving an even bigger chunk of the log missing. For greater effort, Fiera rewarded her with an even bigger chunk of meat than before.
