The sun had risen by now, glimmering overhead like Lunara's pelt. The grass had grown warm underfoot, losing all of it's morning dew, and more citizens of the city had wandered out into the field. Fiera held Lunara's carrier in one hand, wandering out of the field toward a copse of trees. The next trick to teach was essential, but would require a bit more effort, she thought, but at least she had already taught Lunara a couple tricks that would make it easier.
Finally, she found the ideal tree- it had a low split that she could use to climb up if needed, but with plenty of tall branches. She turned back to the field, looking across the expanse of grass before spotting a light colored blotch. "Lunara!" She called. "Come!" She said, holding out her arm in the way she had taught the yumenokei. Lunara bounded over the grass in long, floating leaps, sliding to a stop at Fiera's feet. "Good girl!" The humanish cooed, before holding Lunara up to the tree. "Ok Lunara- leap!"

After a moment's hesitation, Lunara was up, and perched on a branch in the middle level of the tree. Fiera glanced at the fork in the trunk- if worst came to worst, she could climb up there and get her, but hopefully that wouldn't have to happen. Then, she backed up- much further than she did when teaching Lunara to come to her, about 20 feet. After all, she couldn't have Lunara being able to just jump down and land on her!
"Ok Lunara," Fiera shouted to the tree, her yumenokei just barely visible through the branches. "Come!"...Only to meet no response. She dug around in the plastic baggie she brought with her, and held up a carrot. "I have carrots! Come, Lunara!" But again, no response. "...Hm." She huffed, and walked back toward the tree. Lunara was in the exact same spot, clinging to a branch. "Hey, what's the big deal? Lunara, co-" However, Fiera couldn't finish her sentence due to the yumenokei launching herself directly onto the humanish's face.
She grunted, pulling the creature off and setting her down. "Ok, so that was probably a bit overzealous. We still need to get you off the ground, though..."

Fiera was out with Fern today, looking primped and polished in a hot pink track suit that seared the eye more than the blazing sun overhead. She had worked with Fern a little bit before; always such a sweet, polite pup. Apparently, she was surprisingly well behaved for a rakai-sarane, and Fiera had decided that today was the day she was going to be rewarded for that, with a little more substantial training. Fiera had a list tucked into her pocket. Her goals for today were to work on some basic obedience tricks, and then, with any luck, some more advanced moves. First on the list though; teaching Fern that no means no. For this, Fiera bought some snacks, hunks of scrap meat bought from a butcher. Every rakai's favorite! She set it on a stump a ways into the park, in a copse of trees. "Fern!" She called the rakai to get it's attention. Fern's head raised, and she trotted on over, immediately catching the scent of meat. Fiera: 1 Fern: Lv 1.1/Lo 3.1 ("No" start)

Fern sniffed around the piece of meat, nearly sneezing on it in that way dogs do. She side eyed Fiera, who was watching her expectantly. Eventually, she lowered her head and reached out to lick the meat. "No." Fiera said, immediately snatching away the meat. Fern looked at her and whimpered- a trick! Betrayal! Fiera did feel bad, but this was an especially important trick to learn, especially after combat training. It was dangerous to teach large creatures how to breathe fire and spit acid before you could tell them not to do that. She sighed, and gently placed the meat back down. Fern was quicker this time, and moved to bite it this time. Still, Fiera was faster and brought it back even faster. "No!" Fiera said again, firmly. Fern licked her chops and sat back down, frustrated. Fiera sighed. At least now she definitely had Fern's attention, if not her obedience.

Fiera sighed and put the meat back down. Maybe she needed to be a bit sharper about this. Once again, Fern hesitantly reached out to grab the meat; only to flinch away when Fiera said "No!" again, practically shouting this time. It had worked! Fiera picked up the meat again. "Good girl, Fern! That's it!" She offered it to Fern. The rakai sarane looked up at her hesitantly. Fiera made sure her tone of voice was kind and soft this time. "That's it, Fern, you did good! Go on!" Fern carefully moved forward again, and snatched the meat out of Fiera's hand. She wandered a few feet away and laid down, chewing on the gristle. Her head, however, was quick to snap back up when Fiera took another lump of meat out from the cooler she brought with her. "Ready to try again?" Fiera cooed. With a wet plap, the meat landed on the stump.

Fern approached the meat again, but kept her eyes on Fiera. She supposed that was a good thing- at least she was paying attention. She stopped in front of the stump and sat down, still carefully regarding Fiera. Fiera didn't do anything to encourage her one way or the other. She even tried to not look Fern directly in the eyes, knowing it could intimidate her. Fern tilted her head left and right, wagging her tail a couple times with nervous energy. Finally, she moved her head toward the meat, opening her mouth- "No!" Fiera snapped again, raising her hand to take away the meat. Fern growled at her, wagging her tail again. "Don't take that attitude with me!" Fiera said. "No!" Fern kept growling, but didn't actually get any closer to the meat. The two were at a bit of a stand still- Fiera knew she couldn't take the meat without possibly getting bitten...but Fern didn't know that Fiera cared about that. She waited five seconds... ten. Fern's growls got quieter, but she still didn't take the meat.

Finally, Fiera realized that Fern probably wasn't going to take the meat, and smiled. "Good girl!" She cooed. Fern's ears raised up, and she licked her lips nervously. She was being praised now? Fiera nudged the meat toward Fern- pointedly keeping her hand on the opposite side from her venomous fangs. Fern reached out and grabbed it, holding it gently at first until Fiera made more approving noises. Fiera fiddled with the cooler, smiling to herself. Looked like Fern was getting it! She got out another chunk, holding it up so Fern could see it, before setting it down. She pointed at it slowly and deliberately. "Fern, no." She said. Fern whined... but didn't go for the meat. Fiera waited a moment longer, until... "Good girl!" Fern immediately lunged forward, nearly taking a chunk of the stump with her. Fiera tittered with laughter, before getting out another chunk. A couple more repetitions, and the command was no longer a problem for the pair of them.

Fiera gave them both a break afterward, just sitting in the summer sun while Fern tore around after bugs. Just to give them both a clean slate. After about half an hour though, she stood up again, ready to try something else. She looked over to where Fern was, rolling around in the mulch. Cool, cool, that was going to be fun to brush out of her fur later. Still, it was better to focus on what she was doing right now. "Fern!" She called, and the rakai sarane looked over, still upside down with her tongue lolling half out of her mouth. Ok, that was a little cute. Fiera kind of wished she had a camera. Still, training to be done. "Fern, come!" Fiera called. Quite predictably, instead of trotting right over, Fern simply resumed rolling around, not a care in the world. Fiera went back to her treat cooler, knowing that Fern would need more motivation than that.

A chunk of raw meat was drawn from the cooler. " Ugh, this stuff is actually kind of gross and sticky. " She thought to herself. Yes, she ate meat often, but at least that stuff was cooked. At least it was cold and sticky instead of hot and sticky. That way, she could pretend it was something else when not looking at it. Still, at least waving it around like this got Fern's attention. "Come!" Fiera called again, while Fern trotted over. While she wanted to move up to doing this without a treat, at least this would let Fern connect Fiera's words to Fern's actions. Fern finished trotting over, and snuffled at Fiera, pawing a pant leg. Fiera cringed at the streak of mud left on her pristine tracksuit, and hoped that it would wash out. Still, she couldn't make a fuss about it or else it might ruin the training. "Good girl!" She said, dropping the chunk for Fern instead.

The chunk was in Fern's mouth before it hit the ground, and down her throat before Fiera could even turn to face her. Man, this rakai was going to be fat by the end of this training session. Fern was enjoying herself at least, her interest piqued. Fiera backed away, only for Fern to follow after her, perhaps expecting another piece of meat. She was still holding the cooler, after all. "No, no. Fern, stay." Wait. She hadn't taught Fern to stay, yet. Well, that was next on the list, then. Eventually, Fiera distracted Fern by throwing her another hunk of meat and then jogging a distance while the rakai sarane was distracted. "Ok Fern!" She called, only slightly out of breath. "Come!" Fern looked up, ears pricked. Then, to Fiera's relief, began to trot over to her again. "Good girl!" She said, encouraging Fern, patting her legs. "Come here!"

It wasn't until Fern reached her that Fiera realized she hadn't actually gotten a piece of meat ready. She had come without the urge of a treat! "Oh good girl, Fern!" Fiera doted, rubbing Fern's cheeks excitedly. "Aren't you so good!" Fern seemed to appreciate the pats, but still looked up expectantly. Fiera paused, and then relented. "Oh all right," she said, opening the cooler. "Just one more then, to make sure you've gotten it down pat." Fern's tail wagged wildly as Fiera tossed her another meat chunk. She took the opportunity to retreat while she savaged it, backing up toward another tree. Fern seemed to be getting the idea of what Fiera wanted her to do, but she wanted to go over just a couple more times. Fiera put her fingers in her mouth and whistled sharply. "Fern! Here girl! Come!" This time, there was little to no hesistation from the rakai sarane.

Fern sprinted across the leaf litter, sending up sprays of debris behind her. Fern was a beautiful sight, with her arcs of green flame flying behind her, but Fiera couldn't help but flinch as the rakai came close to running into her. She skittered to a stop, just at Fiera's feet, and walked around her a couple times, wiggling with excitement. The tension melted from Fiera's shoulders at Fern's demeanor. "Aw, who's good." She said, crouching down to Fern's level. Fern's tail began wagging even harder, whipping the leaves behind her into a fury. "Ready girl?" Fiera questioned. "One last time!" She backed away once more, and Fern stayed put, pawing at the ground as if this were a fun new game. It had certainly earned her plenty of treats and pets! "Come!" Fiera called from about thirty feet away, and this time there was no hesitation at all. Fiera laughed at her pet's eagerness to please. After this, she knew she had to reward that eager energy, and decided to look for a ball to throw in her training bag.

After Fern had been taught to come, Fiera took the opportunity to unwind a bit and just tear around the field for a while. She wasn't a full cat, no, and would be disgusted at the implication of her having truly animalistic instincts, but she definitely did get the zoomies sometimes. Eventually though, she knew she had to get back to business. She found a thin, young sapling at the edge of the forest, and got a length of rope out of her training bag. Her mouth twitched into a frown a bit at it- she hadn't the time to actually invest in a proper leash yet. Still, it would have to do for this next trick. "Fern!" She called out, testing Fern's latest trick. "Come here!" She couldn't help but smile as the rakai sarane trotted up to her. Fern kneeled down beside her, carefully tying the rope around her neck. Loose enough that it wasn't going to hurt her, tight enough that she couldn't get it off.

The other end of the rope, Fiera tied around the sapling tree. Now, Fern (hopefully) couldn't go anywhere, even if she wanted to. Hopefully, a round with the rope would get the idea of staying in one spot in Fern's head. Fiera began to back away slowly. Fern leapt after her, still wanting to play. Or, perhaps, still thinking that Fiera was teaching "Come". The rope caught fast around her neck however, keeping her tied to the tree. "It's ok, Fern." The humanish assured. "Stay." Fern licked her lips, whining. When Fiera got far enough away, she paused for a minute. Fern continued to straing at the lead, but Fiera kept reassuring her and telling her to "Stay". Finally, when Fiera decided that that had been enough time, she walked back over to Fern. "Good job!" She said. "You stayed so well!" She felt that repetition of the word was important; the more she said it, the more likely Fern was to associate it with the action.
