The small Rakai was investigating a strange, circular hole in the wall. Fanged thought it looked identical to one that a rat or a mouse would use. Mundane animals weren’t as common nowadays, however. She felt drawn to the area as well, her curiosity tingling in her fingertips.
“At least nothing too terrifying can fit in an area so small,” she commented.
Imogen blinked in mute agreement. The Rakai could be brave when she wanted to be. She felt as though she were meant to stick her hand through the hole. It looked big enough to fit at least a good portion of her arm. Of course, the inside could be trapped which made the idea rather dangerous. She could take it slowly and if she felt any pain, she could pull her hand out quickly. She decided that this would be the best course of action. She lowered herself to the ground and brought her hand close to the hole.

She braced herself, half expecting a tiny monster to bite her fingers off. However, her hand remained unharmed for the time being. Imogen shifted closer, curiosity burning in her eyes. Fanged appreciated when her pets had that same curious spark that she possessed herself. Fanged pushed her hand further into the opening, flexing her fingers to see if she could find anything. It took a few minutes of feeling around until her fingers met with a piece of paper. She grasped it and yanked her hand back out into the open. Imogen stuck her snout close to the paper, sniffing it cautiously.
“I wonder what this could be.”
She unfolded the piece of paper, squinting in the low light of the room. The letters were recognizably common, but the words didn’t make any sense. Was this some sort of code? Cyphers could be used to crack secret codes, but she would need to figure out the right cypher to use in the first place.

A red wax leaf sits beneath a bottle of ... uh fog? What sort of fog is green like this?

Fanged glanced around, another strange, bottled substance catching her attention. She scooped up the object, observing it in marvel. It appeared to be some kind of green fog. It was similar to the jar of glowing substance which made Fanged think that there was indeed some sort of purpose to them. It was simply a matter of finding out what. Imogen watched in intrigue as the woman picked up the bottle. Fanged held it out for the Rakai to observe as well. Imogen watched as the fog swirled around. She then glanced at the jar of ectoplasm over on the table as though comparing the two.
“I suppose I’ll put this bottle next to the jar for now.”
The bottle was just as strange as the jar had been. She watched them for a moment once she had set the bottle down, waiting to see if there was any interaction between the two.

To her surprise, the glowing ectoplasm took on a green colouring to match the bottle of fog. Now this was certainly interesting. Imogen looked up as well, her brain working to figure out what caused the object to do such a thing. Magic would be a simple explanation, but it could also be some sort of an illusion. The bottle didn’t seem as necessary to this room as the jar, she placed it with the rest of her mansion findings. The jar seemed like it belonged here, however. Almost like it could be used to solve some sort of puzzle. She held it in her hands, marveling at the green glow.
“Now if I could just figure out where this belongs.”
Imogen followed her as the two walked around the length of the room. The room itself seemed rather ordinary, though it swung more to the spooky side of things than a regular room would.

To the right of the room, a set of drawers was pushed against the wall. Fanged figured it would be beneficial to investigate them. Imogen trotted forward, pressing her snout against the shut drawers, trying to open them herself. When it became evident that one needed opposable thumbs to open them, Fanged stepped in to help. She opened a few drawers, realizing quickly that each contained a different jar with a glowing substance in a variety of colours. Fanged pulled all of them out, frowning as she tried to make sense of it all.
“I don’t suppose you have any ideas?” she asked Imogen.
The Rakai glanced at the jar. She approached Fanged and then waited for the woman to pick her up and place her on top of the dresser. The Rakai could now see all the different jars directly. She could also peer down into the drawers if she wanted to.

Fanged watched as Imogen glanced into the various drawers. She must have seen something that caught her attention because she jumped straight down into the left most drawer in the middle row. She circled the drawer, able to fit comfortably due to her small size. She then glanced up expectantly at Fanged and then one of the coloured, glowing jars. Fanged picked up the green one, figuring she might as well start with the one she had found first. Imogen glanced over at the drawer next to her, as though trying to indicate for the woman to place the jar there. Fanged obliged, amazed when the jar turned bright red.
“I wonder if they all change colour, or just that one.”
She picked up one of the other jars, intent on experimenting. She picked a dark blue jar and placed it in one of the drawers at random. It remained the same colour.

It seemed to be a puzzle, but Fanged couldn’t figure out its purpose. She was clearly meant to match the jars to the right drawers. She tried the dark blue jar out in different places, trying to see if there would be some indication when she found the right one. When there was none, she frowned and placed it back on the dresser.
“This is going to be a little more complicated than I first thought.”
She picked up the jar she had originally found, noting that it was currently bright red. When she placed it in another drawer, the colour switched to bright magenta. It was interesting, but she couldn’t quite figure out a pattern to it. She placed the jar in each drawer, making a mental note of the colours it switched to. Imogen climbed out of the drawer, returning to the top of the dresser. She settled down next to the purple jar.

Remembering the piece of paper, she had found earlier, Fanged wondered if that held the key to solving this puzzle. She grabbed the paper, once again unfolding it and holding it up to the light. She glanced at the jars, wondering if the different colours had something to do with the cipher. Perhaps the first letter of each colour? She tried out different combinations of cyphers until she finally found one that she felt was correct. It left her with a combination of colours, which she hoped was given to her in the order they were meant to be put into the drawers.
“Let’s hope this work,” she commented.
It took her a bit to get the jars in the right order. Imogen watched her critically, waiting for her to make a mistake. When the pattern was correct, the sound of a metal gear grinding filled the room. When it was finished, a door was revealed.

Imogen bounced up and down happily at the reveal of the door. Fanged felt accomplished as well. The puzzle had been difficult, but they’d managed to solve it. She reached over and pulled the Rakai into her arms. She felt safer when she carried the baby pet. That way she didn’t have to worry so much about her getting attacked. She carefully stepped through the door, glad that there was adequate lighting on the other side.
“If we’re cautious, we’ll be able to keep ourselves safe,” she told the Rakai.
Imogen squirmed and Fanged put her down on the ground once she recognized that the area was safe. The room appeared to be an old study. It reminded her of the library they’d been in earlier, but it wasn’t nearly as grandiose. She immediately headed towards the desk, intent on searching for any journals that might have been left in the room.

The room was also covered in dust, which Fanged was beginning to get a bit sick of. She was killing time being in the mansion, waiting for any outside dangers to pass. The good thing about this was that she was developing a strong bond with Imogen. She glanced towards the Rakai. The baby pet was busy investigating a stack of papers that had been dropped carelessly on the ground. Fanged made a mental note to check those out next. For now, she wanted to get her hands on some sort of personal account. Those were always the most telling for what interesting things had happened in a place.
“Come on, come on. Some sort of old journal would be ideal, but I’ll accept scientific documents as well,” she murmured to herself.
After a few minutes of digging through desk drawers, she pulled out a ratty looking journal.
“Perfect!” Fanged grinned.

She put the journal aside for now, simply content with having found it. There’d be plenty of time to read it later. For now, she wanted to explore the rest of the room. Imogen appeared quite interested in that stack of papers and that fact was immensely intriguing to her.
“Do you sense something amiss?” she questioned the Rakai.
Imogen stared intently at the papers, waiting for Fanged to approach and figure it out for herself. The Rakai was the type that did things by waiting for Fanged to do them for her. The woman picked up the top paper, frowning as she read the title.
“Radical training for disobedient pets. Sounds a bit… extreme.”
It was a known fact that certain creatures were more difficult to train than others. A good owner would find the right techniques to keep them under control, but this article seemed to be a little much.

“I think when I get around to training, I won’t be following this guide at all.”
She shuddered as she skim-read the article. The training methods detailed were harsh and didn’t sound particularly effective. It made Fanged feel disgusted that someone was trying to teach others to treat their pets like that. She patted Imogen on the top of her head, trying to show her some affection.
“I hope the rest of the papers aren’t nearly so morbid.”
The next paper was a diagram, detailing the anatomy of a Vulticus. It was incredibly detailed and informative.
“Too bad I don’t own any Vulticus. Maybe I should see if there’s any up for sale for an affordable price. Though I won’t be able to afford one for quite a while I’ll bet.”
She tried to remember as much info as she could. Such info could always come in handy. Especially if she decided to own a Vulticus in the future.

November Roxy was a new addition to her kennel. Fanged had jumped onto a project that had promised the result of a wooly companion. In return for a bit of cash, she had gotten Roxy. Roxy was larger than she had anticipated, but she didn't think that was a bad thing. In fact, she could be rather useful as a pack animal. In order to ensure proper bonding, Fanged had decided to take her new companion to the mansion. While it would be cumbersome to bring Roxy inside due to heavyset stature, there was still the option of exploring the gardens. During this time of year, the gardens were fairly normal. Fanged had heard of strange things happening within them, but she assumed they wouldn't be too out of the ordinary for the mansion. "We'll just take things easy. We'll let you get used to the area and we'll spend some time together. Does that sound good?" Fanged said the question aloud, but she didn't expect Roxy to answer. (Roxy 0 1/5, 2 1/5) 1
