[Schism - Phase Out - 21]
Schism seemed at least somewhat more interested in that, and appealing to the drake's bloodlust aside, it was important to make sure he could 'multi-task' while being invisible. <You're going to want to attack the other drakes while invisible,> Nerius explained, <It's not going to do you any good to just stand there while the other drake can't see you.> Now he just needed something for Schism to attack.
<But there aren't any drakes here, what am I supposed to attack?> Schism seemed to have the same idea, though in a more drake-like fashion. And that was a good question; Nerius really needed to pick up some kind training dummy or target the next time he went shopping. But for now, he looked around, trying to spot anything that would work. Ah! That fallen tree other there would work. <You see that log?> he asked the drake, <That will be your target.>

[Schism - Phase Out - 22]
<It's not a drake, but okay.> A log wasn't as exciting a target for the sarane as another drake would have been, but he still had more interest in the training than he had before. <Phase out as you have been, then rend the log,> Nerius explained, walking closer to the fallen tree, but not so close as to potentially be hit by flying bits of wood as the sarane attacked.
Which he was perfectly happy to do, Schism quickly turned invisible, then lunged at the log, tearing into it with impressive force. Unfortunately, he also flickered a little, and it was easy to spot where he was. This was what Nerius had been concerned about, and why he'd decided to have Schism practice attacking while invisibloe. <I could see you a bit there, as you attacked,> he told the sarane, <Try rending it again, but keep the invisibility steady as well.>

[Schism - Phase Out - 23]
Schism hadn't returned to being visible yet, and once again attacked the log. But again he flickered, and Nerius could briefly see bits of sarane. <Was that better?> the drake asked, flickering fully back into view. He was to be disappointed though, as Nerius informed him of his lack of success. <No, you still flickered while attacking.> It came as no surprise to him that the drake grumbled at this, he liked complaining more than actual training.
After a short, and pouty, break, Nerius had him try again. <Phase out again, and rend.> The drake seemed to glare at the log, before disappearing, and lunging at the log. Wood chips went flying, and Nerius could see.. something. Not the drake himself this time, but an odd shimmer in the air. <That was much better!> he wasn't going to try to explain that to the sarane, it probably would only confuse him, and wasn't much help regardless.

[Schism - Phase Out - 24]
<Try it again, rend, but stay invisible,> Nerius quickly had him repeat the attack, before his current invisibility wore off. What he'd heard about the timing had been right, Schism was able to keep it up for the second attack. Once again, there was a slight bit of shimmer, though it may have simply been that he'd waited too long, as the sarane poofed fully back into visibility only a few seconds after the attack finished.
As usual, Nerius let the sarane have a break, and also gave him a treat. Schism didn't have it down quite perfectly yet, but he was getting there. Once the drake had rested, he had Schism repeat the process, <Phase out, and rend.> The sarane quickly faded from view, and lunged for the log, not that Nerius could see him. Pieces of wood went flying, and he could see as claw marks appeared, but the drake himself remained fully invisible.

[Schism - Phase Out - 25]
<I couldn't see you at all that time!> he informed the sarane, before having him go for another attack, <Rend again, before you return to being visible.> Schism did as asked, and struck at the log again, ripping deep gouges into it, and remaining fully invisible the entire time. After a few seconds, he flickered back into full visibility, and looked at Nerius expectantly. Nerius knew exactly what he wanted, and happy with the drake's success, gave him a meat treat. <That was good! You stayed completely invisible!>
Though, as usual, Schism was disappointed to hear he'd still have to practice more. Nerius had him repeat the process of phasing out, then attacking the log, many more times, wanting to make sure the drake could keep up the invisibility. There would be a lot more going on in a pit fight, and he wanted turning invisible to become second nature to Schism.

[Schism - Phase Out - 26]
And, after a while, Schism seemed to be at that point. When the sarane flickered back into visibility after another round of fully invisible strikes, Nerius decided that they were, finally done. Schism, though for once not complaining, was actually surprised, <Wait, so, we're done now?> he asked, as Nerius gave him a final treat.
<Yes, we're finally done,> Nerius agreed, <You've done very well.> It was always nice to end on a high note, <This will be all for today.> He didn't want to overwork the drake, and possibly have him forget things. Besides, it was starting to get later in the day, and warmer out than Nerius preferred. Schism didn't mind being done, he may not have said anything, out of pride, but the training session had been tiring. Nerius grabbed the bundle of bedding that his TROD had brought for roar training, thankfully Schism was too tired to get riled up over it, and the two headed back to the kennel.

Nerius had gone to the Pit to sign Schism up for a tournament, and had come home with a new hatchling. The purple drake would likely not be amused by this, but he didn't have to know. The Pit, at the time, had newly started offering eggs; Nerius honestly hadn't expected to have a chance to obtain one of the distinctive breeds, and hadn't wanted to pass up the opportunity. The tournament itself had taken up a bit of his time, and Nerius hadn't immediately started working with the golden hatchling. But sooner was better than later when it came to drakes, and the whelp was male, so he found himself carrying a wiggling little sarane to the park for a day of training. He'd forgotten how small they were at this age, even with his limited upper body strength, the hatchling was easy enough to carry. The little sarane had a leash just in case, but it was a bit of walk, and Nerius had decided to carry him. (Nerius: 1/10) (Helios: Lv: 0, 1/5 | Lyl: 0, 1/5)

[Helios - Name - 1]
If Nerius hadn't owned several adult drakes, it almost would have been hard to imagine the bright eyed little whelp as a vicious fighting dragon. But that's exactly what he'd be one day, and Nerius fully planned on having him compete. It would take a lot of training and preparation, but for now, he'd start the hatchling with some basic commands. He needed at least some manners, and to know when Nerius wanted his attention.
Finding a suitable open spot, he wasn't picky this time, just needed a decent sized open space, Nerius set the hatchling down in the grass. Helios squeaked in surprise as his feet touched the ground, but quickly became curious about the area, poking around in the grass. Nerius let him explore a little, he couldn't start this particular thing if the whelp was watching him, and called to the hatchling, "Helios." The sarane, as expected, ignored him, much more interested in a tall stalk of grass.

"Helios," he repeated, as the hatchling batted at the waving grass stalk, though his accuracy wasn't very good. "Helios," he tried again, and the small sarane finally looked at him. Nerius had made enough sounds that he was finally curious enough to look, though he didn't understand what was going on. It was what he was supposed to do though, and Nerius gave him one of the meat treats he'd brought, "Good job!"
The hatchling was very interested in the morsel, and left the stalk of grass to gobble down his snack. He was watching Nerius a bit too intently now, hoping for more food. He couldn't very well try to get the drake's attention if he already had it. But this was one time where the short attention span of hatchlings came in handy, soon enough the whelp's attention was captured by a leaf tumbling across the grass near where the pair was.

Nerius let him get properly distracted by the leaf, before calling "Helios." The hatchling ignored him, more interested in attempting to pounce on the leaf. He missed terribly, and made a sad squeak of disappointment as the tumbled away. "Helios," Nerius tried again, now that he wasn't as intently focused on the leaf. The whelp looked over to him, or more specifically, the sound, still looking disappointment. He perked up a bit though when Nerius gave him a treat, as he'd done a "Good job."
Again, he was being watched, as the food was likely the most interesting thing around for the small drake. There was no conveniently timed bit of moving plantlife, but even so, the hatchling's attention waned after a few moments, and he went back to looking around the grassy fields. "Helios," he called to the hatchling again, the welp turned right away to look at him, though Nerius wasn't sure if it was the lack of anything more interesting, or if he was getting used to sounds meaning food.

Either way, it was a faster response, and Nerius praised him, as well as gave him a treat. As before, he let the hatchling loose interest, before calling his name again. Helios turned to look, and again was given a treat and praise. Nerius repeated this process several more times, until he was reasonably sure that the hatchling would look at him every time.
There was still one other thing to work on though, he needed the whelp to respond to his name specifically, not to anything that Nerius said. The plan here was quite simple, just alternate between calling out random words, and the drake's name, and only reward him for responding to his name. "Chocolate," was his first choice of a non-name word. When he needed to think of random words, he, well, he usually defaulted to food. But the sarane wouldn't know one way or the other, and as expected, looked at Nerius hoping for food.

To be honest, the word 'chocolate' was a good way to get Nerius' attention, but the sarane didn't have the excuse of knowing what it was, and his responding to the word was just what Nerius didn't want. So, he didn't respond to the hatchling, neither praising him or handing over a treat. Helios was more disappointment by the latter, and made an unhappy squeak at the lack of a snack.
Nerius waited for the whelp to quit watching him, which took longer than usual with him not getting a treat. But once the hatchling had stopped staring, he called out again, this time using his name, "Helios." The hatchling still looked over, he'd gotten food more often than not, after all, and was in fact, given a treat this time, "Good job." Okay, now he needed another random word... food it was again. "Curry," it was a rather different choice than 'chocolate', but he'd had it recently, and whatever worked.

The hatchling again looked at him, hoping for food. He was disappointment again though, as Nerius didn't want him to respond to random words. "Spaghetti," He'd just keep saying assorted foods until Helios didn't look at him. "Cherry pie." The whelp wasn't quite as interested this time, but still looked over. "Scrambled eggs," that finally did it, Helios didn't respond to the final food, which was somewhat ironic, Nerius thought, as Helios hatched from an egg.
Now he just had to get Helios to continue to respond to his actual name. "Helios," he called to the hatchling, who didn't respond. Not entirely surprising, but not what he wanted. "Helios," he called again, this time holding out a treat. That got the whelp's attention, perhaps he should have led with that, but Nerius had to admit, he wasn't the most experienced at pet training, especially by local standards. Still, he knew enough to give the hatchling a treat, and praise him.

He'd have to remember to alternate earlier next time, but for now, he'd just have to continue what he'd started. Which, was to call out another (food) word, and hope the whelp didn't respond, "Guacamole." He wasn't holding out a treat this time, and while Helios glanced up, he lost interest when he didn't see a snack. "Helios," he used the hatchling's name this time, and he looked over, looking for a treat. Nerius hadn't been holding one, but as soon as he saw the hatchling respond, quickly gave him a treat, as well as praise.
Nerius repeated this many more times, alternating calling out random foods and (ironically) not giving Helios a treat, and using his name, which was rewarded. This whole practice would have gone faster, he suspected, if he'd started alternating the sarane's name and random words earlier; it was something he'd have to remember for next time, as he still had a lot of pets that weren't trained.

It took quite a bit of repetition, as Nerius had, unfortunately, gotten the hatchling rather used to sound equaling food early in the training process. Eventually though, Helios seemed to be getting it, and was consistently responding to his name, and not to whatever meal item Nerius called out. Food may not have been the ideal word choice, it hadn't mattered for the sarane, but now Nerius wanted a snack. But he hadn't brought anything for himself, only the sarane, and he wasn't eating the weird meat bits, yuck!
Ah well, he'd have to get something later, because they still had plenty of training left to do. Nerius didn't want to overwhelm the hatchling with too many things in one session, but he did want to cover more than just the whelp's name. Hmm, what next? He'd just stick to basic obedience for now, he didn't want to teach the little drake to be extra dangerous before breaking him.
