While Phi was busy dealing with the chain, Fanged found herself distracted by the presence of a strange egg. She had found a few similar ones in the mansion, but didn’t expect the phenomena to persist in an entirely different location. When the commotion of the chain had finished, the woman quickly stashed the egg in her backpack and joined Phi to investigate the new area that had opened up to them.
The area that opened up was a quite mess. It was extension of the manmade mineshaft. The ground was covered in rubble and there were several large holes in the walls. Fanged walked over to one of the holes and peered inside. There was a narrow tunnel beyond, which was completely dark. She grabbed her flashlight and used it to do a quick scan of the darkened area. It was a cave-in. A large chunk of the wall had collapsed and blocked off the passage.

She could see light coming from farther down, but it was impossible to tell how far down the tunnel went. Especially when there were sections of it completely blocked off. Phi was eager to explore this new tunnel. She fluttered her wings excitedly and approached the entrance with an excited gait. Fanged sighed. The Raikiri seemed very eager to go into the darkness. She knew that it was probably best to let her go ahead, but she couldn't help but worry about the dangers that might lie within. She decided that ultimately, she would watch the creature’s back while she took point. They began to walk through the tunnel, moving at a quick but careful pace. The air was cool and dry, which made it a bit easier for them to breathe. They continued down the tunnel, until eventually they reached a fork in the road. One way led deeper into the darkness, while the other led to light.

After a moment of indecisiveness, Phi veered down the tunnel that led towards more blackness. Fanged grumbled under her breath for a moment as she turned to follow. The tunnel itself was widened up enough for the two of them to stand side by side. As they walked, Fanged could hear the sound of rushing water. She shivered slightly at the thought of the creatures that might live in such a place. Water tended to attract wild critters after all. She didn’t know how prepared they’d be to face them. Phi had some training, but she had never participated in a battle before. After walking for a short distance, the tunnel opened up into a cavern. The ceiling was high above their heads, but there was a small stream running through the middle of the space. The stream was skinny enough to easily jump across, so Fanged did just that.

She landed gracefully on the other side. Phi was quick to join her, using her wings as leverage to make the jump. As they continued, the stream grew wider and broader. The current was much stronger than it had been in the tunnel. It appeared like it might be difficult to travel past it, perhaps it would be best to turn around. Fanged glanced behind her briefly to see if traveling backwards was an option. To her surprise, the path behind them was blocked by water. The water was rushing along the ground and filling up the path in front as well. In fact, the entire area was slowly filling with a torrent of water. She skirted to the right, searching for an escape from the water. Phi had taken to the air, the cavern providing her with enough space to take flight. She indicated for Fanged to follow her guidance.

The water rushed by them as Phi flew higher and led Fanged down the driest part of the cavern. Fanged behind down and saw that the water was still advancing on her. It had filled the cavern almost completely behind her. A quick glance at her feet told her that her boots were becoming quickly submerged in the overflow. She needed to find a way to get out of here, or else she would drown. She looked around for a way to climb out of the water. There was a ledge near where she stood, but it was too far away to reach. Phi called out to her and tried to keep her on track. Fanged couldn't help but panic. The Raikiri led her towards a safer path that would still take her to higher ground. Phi was right. This way she could scramble up quite easily. She kicked her legs up until she had a solid perch.

She still had to hurry to avoid being trapped beneath the rising waters. She managed to get her body pulled up completely, though to her dismay the water continued to rise. She pulled her body upwards and trudged up the rocks that were scattered across the path she had climbed onto. Phi landed on the ground next to her, throwing a careful look towards the water that swirled below them. Phi glanced up at the ceiling and then back to Fanged. She pointed her head downwards and gestured for Fanged to follow. The two of them took off at a rapid pace, trying to stay ahead of the water that continued to rise towards them. They continued to scale up the rock formations, climbing up the mines and deeper into its heart. They climbed higher and higher until finally, they reached a ledge that overlooked the area. The water was far below them now and didn't appear to be rising any further. For now, they had escaped a certain chilling death. Glancing around at their surroundings, Phi and Fanged found themselves surrounded by an eerie sense of nothingness. The stone that surrounded them appeared colourless and the air a bit too still for Fanged's tastes. She was beginning to feel a little uneasy, especially when she noticed that the ground seemed to shift beneath her feet. She stopped and crouched down to inspect the ground. She was glad that she did, because she noticed that areas of rock appeared to crumble completely underneath their feet. Phi lowered her gaze and searched the path for the safest areas to walk on.

Fanged followed closely behind her, looking around for any signs of danger. There wasn't any water on the path that lay ahead of them, but if she looked closely, she could see some patches of frost where the ground beneath was frozen. Now that she noticed it, she realized that the temperature within the mines had been dropping. Phi stepped carefully around the ice patches, not wanting to slip. In the middle of the path was another strange egg. Fanged picked it up and added it to her backpack with her other finds and zipped it up. The two of them continued their trek deeper into the mines. After walking for a while, Fanged became aware of a change in the air. The temperature had dropped even further and the air smelled as if it were going to snow. She didn't think it was possible for snow to be present underground, however.

As she thought about this, she saw the snow begin to cover the ground of the path in front of them. It was thick and heavy, covering everything in sight. It was a whiteout. Fanged felt a shiver run down her spine. She didn't think such a thing could be possible, but with the extra factor of magic, technically anything could occur. Phi took careful steps as she was forced to traverse through the snow. Fanged was grateful that her hiking boots would protect her from this strange weather. The path ahead of them was a sharp incline, but the two of them continued to climb upwards since there was no other way to go. After climbing up the path for a while, they came across something strange. There was something round buried in the snow, covered by several inches of it. Fanged knelt down to inspect whatever it was.

It was dark grey and appeared to be made of metal. Phi approached to look at it as well and the two of them began to work to free it from the snow. When Fanged picked it up, she realized that it was a small cannonball. A rather odd sight for the mines that was certain. Perhaps weapons had been stored down here. There was no reason to take it with them so she placed it back on the path, allowing nature to reclaim it once more. They continued to climb upwards, making their way through the whiteout. They soon found themselves at the end of the path, where it ended in a large cavern. The walls of the cavern were lined with metal bars that looked like they had been welded together. It gave the illusion that they were in a prison, but Fanged was pretty certain that the bars were there for structural purposes.

The two of them took a moment to examine their surroundings. They couldn't see very far into the darkness. Luckily, they had the flashlight to aid them, but it could only do so much to enhance their vision. Fanged was getting tired and she knew that she needed to rest. She had been pushing herself hard for a while now and her legs were beginning to give out on her. She was about to sit down and take a break when she heard a strange noise coming from the depths of the cavern. Phi was immediately on edge. She used her wings to make herself larger, fully prepared to attack to defend them if she needed to. She kept her eyes focused on the entrance to the cavern, ready to strike at anything that tried to get past her. A large, foreboding shadow began to flicker and move towards them.

Fanged instinctively drew the shovel from the bundle of tools that she carried. "I don't know what that is," Fanged whispered. "But I'm not taking any chances."
Phi stood poised as the shadow stepped into view. To both of their surprised, it was a pile of rats, their tails twisted together to make a creature straight out of folklore, a rat king. There were dozens of them all together. The two of them watched in awe as the rats swarmed towards them. They moved as a single unit, as though they even shared a brain. Phi's expression twisted into a snarl as she prepared to fight. She was about to leap forward when she stopped and turned her attention to the rat that appeared to be their leader. Fanged was confused as to why she was hesitating. She watched as the rat began to untangle itself. Rather than being an enemy, the poor creatures were simply trying to free themselves.

Two blue stones are wrapped in the coils of a red wyrm. It glares at you as you're trying to help the rat. Maybe it's assessing your intentions? If you prove to be helpful and generous, it might just go with you to see what you might do in the world. (Make at least 2-5 RP posts interacting with the creature and trying to tame it. At the end of your taming attempt, make your last post with [done] and wait for staff approval.)
