“I guess I can relate to an extent. I don’t have very many pets myself, so I never really acknowledged how odd it was to not have any until rather recently. I haven’t had a pet pass away, but I would definitely grieve mine if they did.” Fanged wouldn’t push the prospect of adoption too much. That was a topic that Taylor’s mom would need to address herself. It was not Fanged’s place to tell her how she should raise her family.
“The park is just up ahead. It’ll give us an opportunity to observe Scamp’s behaviour and to figure out what he needs to heal. His wounds are emotional, but that doesn’t make them any less real. I’m sure you can understand that yourself.”
Voxel yipped excitedly as they approached the park. Fanged had only taken him here briefly when she needed to cut through the space after taking trips into the city.

Taylor’s mom hesitated for a moment her eyes misty as she stood near the entrance of the park. Taylor was quick to dart into the park grounds, swinging Scamp happily as they skipped forward. Voxel followed them, sparing a quick glance at Fanged to ensure that the woman was still close.
“It’s okay to not be ready. You are grieving just as much as he is,” she told the woman. “But moving forward is also a necessary part of life. Entering the park is a good first step.”
Taylor’s mom nodded and then followed her child into the park. Fortunately, the sun was shining brightly despite it being rather close to winter. Even if the sun wasn’t very warm, its presence was still soothing and full of healing energy. Being outside was already having an improvement on Scamp. The Rakai puppy squirmed to be let down on the ground which Taylor obliged.

Voxel immediately darted over, yipping happily as the Rakai was set free. Voxel’s ethereal form had surprisingly little impact on their ability to play with one another. Even Taylor had no issue playing with them. The child even attempted to pet Voxel with little issue, their fingers simply ghosting over the air where the Specter was present. Voxel appreciated the gesture anyways. Scamp surprised all of them by padding up to Voxel and nipping playfully at the air. He was slowly but surely gaining a bit of energy back.
“I think the fresh air is working well on all of us. The weather won’t stay like this for long. Soon there will be snow. For children, that’s not usually a problem. But I prefer to stay indoors when the weather gets rough.” Making small talk was a good start. She needed the woman to be comfortable with her before she broached any difficult subjects.

She and Taylor’s mom continued to watch the trio play. Scamp gradually began to become more and more playful, indulging in a game of tag with his companions. After a while, it became clear that having a friend and being outside was improving Scamp’s condition dramatically.
“I suppose I have been neglecting to take them to the park. It’s been difficult. I work so much and I just can’t find the time. I know children are relatively independent around here, but I can’t help but worry about Taylor when I’m not there. Perhaps I should be more lenient.”
“Being cautious is a good trait, but perhaps there are some safe places for Taylor and Scamp to go. I’m sure the city should have volunteers to watch children. I wish I could offer my services, but I’m not exactly the best with children.” Fanged replied.
Taylor’s mother nodded in understanding. “I will have to look into those.”

“I think you know what needs to happen next. Scamp and Taylor have a strong bond, but he needs companions that are similar to himself as well. I know it’s difficult, but it’s not healthy to cling onto the past so much. Moving forward is a good step,” Fanged advised.
Voxel stopped playing for a moment, returning to Fanged’s side as the woman explained what was to be done to help Scamp.
“I feel like I’m replacing Spots, even though I know it’s what Scamp needs,” Taylor’s mom responded.
Fanged placed a hand on her shoulder in sympathy. “I can’t rush you to make that choice, but it’s good that you’re thinking about it.” She paused, watching as a lively Scamp played games with Taylor. “I think this has been a good start. I can’t do anything further to help his healing. The next step is one you need to take on your own.”
The two talked for a while longer. When Taylor and Scamp were tuckered out, it was time to part ways.
“I hope with a bit more time, you can find it within yourself to adopt a friend for Scamp. It helps not to think of this new creature as a replacement, instead they would be a new friend.”
Fanged imparted one last bit of advice before she and Voxel turned to head home.
