It was hard to focus.
Rhys was aware that the shadow creature--- Envix--- was saying something, but it was hard to think through the pain. It lanced through him a second time, and now it hardly mattered that the shadows were pinning him down. He could not have moved if he wanted to. With a strangled noise, he crumpled; the desperate beating of his wings faltered, then stopped altogether. Paralyzed, he could not so much as soften the blow as his body struck the surface of the sands.
He had to fight. Rhys knew this, but it was so hard to think. So hard to keep his eyes open. So hard to breathe...
"We yield," said Rabbit.
It was a simple, undecorated statement, delivered in the clipped and neutral tones that only a TROD could produce. Nevertheless, it was a surrender.
She did not doubt that Rhys would dislike this, but neither did she doubt that Aster would dislike it all the more if it became known that she had not only taken Rhys to the Pit, but let him die here. Even though the death of a fighter here was not permanent, there was a risk of complicating factors, and organic beings had a tendency to shy away from it.
In truth, she wondered that Rhys had stayed conscious so long. Most creatures of his size and level of fitness would have been incapacitated long before this. But if Rhys had been hoping to turn the tide of the fight through sheer determination alone, then he had failed in his endeavor. The next blow would have been a fatal one.
Faintly, she felt his mind brush hers, a poor imitation of his usual presence. He was aware of her even now, if dimly.
But if he wished to berate her for this, there would be time to do it later. He was hardly in a state to do it now.

Striking his shadow and pinning him down feels more like a lucky strike than anything else. He is so fast in the sky that getting near enough to it instead of trying to drain his shadow from a distance feels like taking a large gamble on it.
One that paid off.. but at a cost.
She had expected him to snap back something witty against her, or perhaps give some answers to her that would have made her mull on it for a while, but what she hadn’t expected was to hear him cry out and just fall from the air!
She lets go of his shadow, uncertain if it might be a trick, but also not intending to cause any more pain then necessary in this battle.
She sees him fall fast enough to be a dive or a lunge at her, if not for the way his body is positioned that shows clearly it isn’t intended as such. His wings don’t beat against the air any longer.
Never before did she feel herself hating the fact she isn’t physical as she did in this moment when the sound of his landing made her wince.
She could perhaps have softened the landing with her own body now that she is certain it isn’t a trick, even if she might have risked getting bitten perhaps, she feels like this wasn’t quite supposed to happen like that.
‘Are you alright?’ She says while slowly coming closer, moving in a way that hopefully isn’t going to be taken as threatening.
It felt like the fight was cut short, their bantering against each other while trying to outwit one and the other too short to stay in the moment and enjoy it. ‘Is this what victory feels like? Is this how I looked last time?’ She couldn’t help but wonder as she stares at the crumpled form in front of her while feeling conflicted.
She hears something being announced in the stadium by a man, cheers of the crowd and clapping at the show they performed. But she didn’t pay any attention to it as she continuous staring at his fallen form.
‘You won Envix! They just now declared that the Trod forfeited the match!!’ She exclaims in her mind as she grips the railing of the bleachers.
She hadn’t expected the fight to happen like this, not when it seemed that Envix followed the same road on ignoring her commands like Rayak did in his last tournament, and that most of those fight would end up like it here too.
A loss.
But instead, she still feels surprised at how Envix was able to pin down the other creature’s shadow fast enough to ensure she couldn’t be attacked.
And with the intent to harm behind it, she knows the light sting she felt when teaching her that move is likely nothing compared to the agony the other creature must be going through right now.
‘I did?’ She could hear Envix finally responding, and sees her look away from her opponent for just a moment to look in her direction before facing her opponent’s form once more.
‘Yep, you’ve won!’ She repeats again as she hears the strange tone of voice coming from Envix, she doesn’t think she has heard that one before. Nor does she know for certain what it could mean.
Though looking at Envix’s form as she watches her opponent’s form getting tended to by the medical staff coming on the scene, she could perhaps describe it as melancholy?
‘I’ve made my first step then in proving myself..’ She hears Envix murmur inside her mind, almost quietly as she sees her shadowy form droop and sink slightly in the ground. ‘I liked fighting against him. Bantering against him.. It was just.. fun.’ Bantering? She felt surprised at those words, wondering how that was possible since Envix’s opponent isn’t a Shadow Lurker. But she supposes it or rather he might have some telepathy perhaps?
‘Well..’ She pauses for a moment, licking her dry lips as she contemplates what to say to that surprising revelation, that may just have brought to light why exactly she was so enthusiastic in this match. ‘Perhaps one day you two will meet again, and under better circumstances to do that?’ She says in her mind towards her companion.
‘Hopefully.’ Was the only answer Envix gave her to that.
