Once again nothing.... and this time she had seem the outline of the fish that had poked at her line a few feet away from the water's edge. Maybe she should get a book or something? The kind with pictures that would point out just what equipment she wanted, which fish she would find in the water, and the best combinations to get a hit, maybe depending on what exactly she was after. That had to be a thing, right? There was no way that no one had ever recorded any information on fishing, she would have to stop by the library at some point. Maybe now was a good time to get that done? No... no, she still had worms left. She would finish up the stock she had now and then stop by the library before going to pick up some new bait and other supplies. Besides, Bez didn't seem to want to go.

He looked so happy as he laid there blissfully along the shores, sun basking down on his skin during the breaks in light cloud cover. His eyes were closed in peace, though Sevyrn could tell from the way he was breathing that he was still very much awake. He was just a very content, peaceful little ghaenelt right now - and that was Sevyrn's favourite kind. She wanted the creatures that she raised to feel at peace around her, like she was their home. For a moment Sevyrn needed to stop and admire the little guy, sit her bum down beside him and gently stroke his body. The ghaenelt's head turned up as her fingers first touched his abdomen, expression quizzical, and a light laugh escaped Sevyrn's lips. "You're just fine Bez," she assured as her touch moved to the top of his head, and then beneath his chin to give it a gentle scratch.

"Why don't you give it a try?" She joked, the ghaenelt still watching her closely trying to understand what she was saying. Wouldn't it be fun to at least try letting Bez swat at the fishies? Maybe they would get lucky and pull something up! (Sevyrn knew that was incredibly unlikely, she mostly just wanted to stop for a moment and have fun.) After sitting herself at the water's edge she called Bez over to her. The ghaenelt very obviously didn't want to get up - if he had been a person he would have groaned like a grumpy old man based on the expression on his face - but inevitably he did go over to his person. What in the world did she want? He hadn't been expecting Sevyrn to pull her knees up to her chest and lean towards the water, holding her hand open above it. Why in the world was she swatting at the little pieces of algae and seaweed that flowed downriver?

Bez eventually seemed to get it - batting at the river's flora, anyways. He would probably have no idea what to do with an actual fish but that was okay - Sevyrn was just happy to be sitting there with one of her best friends, having a fun little moment. As much as she didn't want to get in to the river, the young woman didn't mind getting her hands and arms yet - or Bez, for that fact. He hadn't meant to splash her, that much Sevyrn was sure of, but when he batted at the plant life and accidentally brought his paw out of the water with enough force to hit Sevyrn square in the face with river water, she purposely cupped her hand beneath the surface to bring up a handful of water and splash him back - the look of indignation on that boy's face after was enough to have Sevyrn laughing immediately.

Okay, okay - it was time to get back to business. Bez was so unimpressed with what Sev had done to him that he had walked off away from the river's edge, shook off and laid down - eyes focused straight on Sevyrn lest she try to approach him and do that again. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. You did it to me first, Bez," she tried to plea to no avail - the ghaenelt's eyes just narrowed at her. He must have felt like he had been deeply betrayed. Accepting her fate, that Bez wanted some time away from her now, Sevyrn grabbed another of the worms she had bought and worked on attaching it to the hook. It was still an awkward task for her, but she was getting better with each attempt. After she was ready to go, she pulled the rod back and prepared to flick the line in to the water. Once comfortable, she did just that. 30 Bez - 22

There is was - baby's first fish! Sevyrn felt the tug on the rod and this time it didn't manage to escape from her as she tried to reel it in. Fish had more strength to them than she had expected, though. It was a battle to reel it in, but once its brown head peeked past the surface of the water, Sevyrn was sure this was a win! Bez was rather excited by simply the way his girl was acting, but then he saw that thing come out of the water and his chattering went wild.
Sevyrn... didn't really have any clue how to take the fish off of the hook though. The fish didn't stop moving and... was she going to have to reach in to its mouth? She didn't want to hurt it trying to take the hook out, after all she wanted to bring it back home for the pond.

Nervously, Sevyrn finally dove her hand in to the fish's mouth and grabbed at the solid part of the hook, trying to tug it out of the fish. It seemed to be in rather shallow and she sighed breath of relief as she was able to free it. Of course, just her luck, the fish then escaped from her hands and fell on to the ground, where it flapped about and Bez took a good look and sniff at it. Damn it, she couldn't let it flop about suffering like that - Sevyrn reached down to the ground and did her best to pick the slippery slimy creature up and get it over to the little fish tank as quickly as she could. It didn't even wait to be in water before it slid out of her hand.
It ended up being a job well done - the fish was happy and in her tank, ready to go home with her.

Sevyrn seemed to be having a momentary streak of good luck - it was only a couple casts after that first fish that she had another pull at her line, this time something more long and eel-like that that first red and brown fish. She wasn't any less anxious trying to free this one from her line than she had been the first one, but this time she made a point to start trying while already at the fish tank, hands supporting its body as she walked so that it wasn't dangling and risking unnecessary damage. Once it was freed she was even able to simply let it go back in to the water, no need to try and keep it safe. It was much happier being undisturbed in the tank than in the open air, though Bez's nose against the glass seemed to be startling both inhabitants. "I'll get you to the pond soon, guys. I promise. I only have two worms left."

Man, she was proud of herself. Ryden would have been proud of her, too. He had always wanted her to try this out with him and Sevyrn desperately wished that she had taken up that opportunity while it was still there. This would have been so much easier with him at her side, telling her what equipment she wanted, what bait to use, walking her through getting that hook out for the first time. Now that she was doing this in his memory, she wanted to do it right simply to do right by him.
Eventually Bez lost interest in the fishes, and at that point Sev figured that it was safe to get back to work. The last thing she wanted was the curious little thing to accidentally knock a fish out of the tank while she wasn't looking and have it die on her. She knew that wouldn't happen on purpose, but it could happen...

Now that she was happy with how things went, and riding the high of catching baby's first and second fish, Sevyrn was excited to get going again. What else could be in there, waiting for her? Would she end up catching anything else to day, was her beginner's luck worn out? There was only one way to find out - to keep going until she was out of supplies. After that she could head back to the bait shop and pick up some more stuff, maybe different hooks and even some lures rather than simply just live bait. She would probably feel better with that than using a worm, anyways. Worms might not be as smart as she or any other person were, but they were still creatures with a right to live their lives out. After attaching a new worm, Sevyrn cast her line out once more and waited patiently to see if anything more would come her way. 35 Bez - 23

A splash and a wriggle. Things look promising, but then-- drat! The fish slips away.
[Nothing happens.]

Drats - there was nothing... there was almost something, but nope - not today. That left Sevyrn with only one single solitary worm in her cup of worms and that meant that she would probably be heading home soon unless she wanted to try to fish without any bait or lure at all... that didn't seem like a very smart move. She would definitely have to load up on supplies the next time that she was able to make a trip in to town - as long as she focused on lures rather than live bait, it wasn't like whatever she got was going to die on her if she took too long to make use of it. Sevyrn really desperately wished that she had Ryden around to tell her what kind of stuff that she would want to get... but she would figure it out one way or another - for him if not for herself.

Bez seemed to once again be interested in the fish, who although in relative safety swimming around in the tank, had no plant life or big rocks to hide behind and get away from him. They seemed to be going crazy in there, not knowing that Bez himself was utterly harmless to their little fishy fins. Wanting to give the things a break Sevyrn attached her hook to the rod and shoved the butt of it in to a crevice between large sturdy rocks before calling Bez over to her. The ghaenelt bounded to his girl, chattering all the while in excitement. He was so glad to have her attention again! Sevyrn had a laugh as she crouched down to be closer to eye level with him, and reached her hand out. He gave it a sniff and then a single lock before playfully leaping closer to her, front paws winding up against her knees.

Sevyrn loved this boy. Strangely enough... he was one of the only boys in her kennel, besides her orbaru. One estharne was male, she had assumed Hemi to be a "he"... but after that there was just Bez. How strange must that be to him, surrounded by ladies all the time? To make matters worse the only lady of his species was just a baby! Sure if she ever wanted baby ghaes the labs would be able to take genetic material from both of them to create some new ones, but it wasn't like Bez was ever going to be more than a big brother to... anything. Did that bother him? Did he even have a care in the world? Sevyrn knew that he loved and was protective of his "little sister", and he lived a very happy life with her. Really, as long as he was happy the species of the other creatures and whether or not they were prospective mates didn't matter that much.
