It's quiet here, the mammalian mused, watching over the sparse grassy field that was both utterly familiar, and yet there hung a strange kind of foreign vibe over it at the same time.
It's a quiet season, the tat-lung murmurred next to her, a soft sound of muted rumbles. Though I suppose it's as much down to perception as anything else. We haven't been back here in quite some time, after all. He was being amusing, she knew as much, though it didn't stop her from feeling just that tad bit awkward about the fact their little training space had seen better days..
..well, more so than usual, at least. The fence could use some fixing from where weather and use had worn away some structural integrity, the yard itself was half-overgrown, half desert, and that's not even going into talking about the debris pile of timber somewhere beneath what looks like a new rose bush.
Right, well.. before all that there's some work to do, the sphinx dusted her hands and hopped the fence.

It was quite a bit of work to get the place into at least a semblance of normality. While the agate did most of the heavy lifting (and no small part of the gardening via deadwood stakes from the ground), then the sphinx focused in on all the little details.
Thankfully both trees still looked as hale and strong as ever, though the tangle of smaller vines at the roots had started to threaten that. She also went over each part of the fence with a fine-tooth pencil, marking down areas and planks that need to be replaced (eventually), while fixing up any immediate emergencies with some rope, twine and in some cases even proper wire.
The debris pile was also unearthed, after a time, and while most of it got moved outside the fence, it would take a couple more trips to get it completely worn down to nothing. In the meantime, though, there was once more space to get started on the actual work..

The next day, the duo was on the spot bright and early, for there was a longer day ahead of them. Perhaps more so because the mammalian feared some rusty skills than anything, because although the yard had been largely fixed to somewhat acceptable state, it was still a far cry from being a proper training ground. Admittedly it had always been a far cry from that, but in this case the mammalian didn't really want to risk training anything that can blow down the fence with a single (potentially fiery) snort.
So instead, she opened up the small carrier bag and let out something much smaller, friendlier, and chipper. The cheeky gallor emerged with slight apprehension at first, not really familiar with the area, but as soon as he saw the presence of both mammalian and tat-lung, the confidence began to grow, and he hopped out more excitedly.
So what's the agenda for today? the agate mused, setting down next to the mammalian.
Some groundwork for Validus here, she turned to look at him with a smirk, And proper language lessons for you. I'd say its high time, no?
The agates brow raised, You mean, beyond just books, I'm assuming?
Beyond books.

( Validus, Get - Scroll: 1 / Mear, Foreign Language - Common I: 1 )
This has been a project the two had been working on for quite some time, tricky though it might have been. The problem wasn't so much that Mear had trouble understanding the complexities of language or syntax, but more so that the tat-lung in general, for all their wondrous vocalizations, couldn't quite make that work with humanoid speech. Still, even if one wasn't able to speak back, it helped to understand when spoken to.
The agate had a framework to start from, back when the two had started the training through reading. Conceptually he understands the words-as-is-on-paper, so his job now was to upgrade that words-as-is-heard. The ribbon bond fortunately made it much more accessible than usual, and allowed him to observe first, as the sphinx started with Validus.
"Validus, c'mon boy," she coaxed the gallor's attention with a small bag in her hand. "Let's see if you can help me find things." Well, not 'find' as such, but they had to start somewhere. When the cheeky's attention was fully on her, she tossed him a treat, opening that wonderful world of realization that Treats Were A Thing, and hopefully it helped entice him into further cooperation.
When the cheeky began to hope around excitedly, trying to jump up at the bag in her hand, she considered that simple part 1 a success at least (though reminded herself the even cheekys could have.. somewhat sharp claws, if she wasn't careful and he decided to clamber after the thing). ( Validus, Get - Scroll : 2 / Mear, Foreign Language - Common I: 2 )
"Alright, settle down, settle down," she held out a hand, palm flat towards him, and eventually the gallor quieted. It was a feline-like kind of quiet, not strictly suspicious, but certainly well aware that there will be other opportunities and he's more than willing to wait for when those come around. While that was happening, the sphinx pulled a blank scroll from her side pouch, holding it up for Validus to see. It was mainly blank in that there was no writing in or on it, but there was none the less a few different ribbons with a couple of different seals holding it together - one for each areas the sphinx assumed might ever need to have one be retrieved from.
Validus watched as she very intentionally placed a treat inside the scroll, before walking off towards the other side of the yard. The cheeky wasted little time in hopping after her, eyes on the prize now that he knew what was inside of it. And for a time, that was the idea too.
You know, if you'd like me to learn something, you'll need to speak up a bit more, the tat-lung suddenly interjected with a bell-ish laugh like slow gongs. Reading the thoughts alone isn't going to be enough.
The sphinx started, blinked, and then lightly tapped her forehead. Right, right..

( Validus, Get - Scroll: 3 / Mear, Foreign Language - Common I: 3 )
It seemed some habits were harder to break than others, nevermind she always figured that she perhaps spent a bit TOO much time talking to the creatures in some cases. But, if Mear was to combine the ephemeral nature of a thought with the very solid vocal of the same word, he needed more material to work with. So, the mammalian went back to an age-old habit, more so than she had in a while.
"Alright Validus, this scroll is going to be your main objective," she held it up, and the cheeky's eyes already widened. "What I need you to do is to get it. Anywhere I put it down, you'll need to bring it back once told, alright?" Validus, being not so gifted as the tat-lung, had little notion about what she was saying (but that wasn't the purpose anyway).
"Let's try here," the sphinx stopped and looked ahead to a small flat stone in the grass. Holding Validus back by one hand, she placed the scroll onto it with another. "Not yet, not yet.." Though the cheeky was more than willing to wiggle, he wasn't invested enough as to outright break out of the grasp, so eventually he settled, though while making a few small chirps every few seconds to indicate his interested in the trait-laden scroll had not at all faded.

( Validus, Get - Scroll: 4 / Mear, Foreign Language - Common I: 4 )
"Hold… hold.. Okay, get the scroll, Validus," the sphinx let him go, and the cheeky made two small jumps towards the boulder, before snatching up the scroll. "Good!" the sphinx smiled and stepped up, picking the scroll out of the beak before the gallor could do much more damage to it. He could certainly smell the treat inside, no doubt, but that wouldn't have been very constructive to the survival of the scroll - easiest way to get it would have been to simply dismantle the scroll.
"Good get, Validus," the sphinx instead took out a treat from the bag and fed it to him. "Now, let's try this a few more times, okay?"
The next attempts were largely the same process repeated, just to get a bit of groundwork going - place the scroll, hold back until the command was given, then release with command, retrieve the scroll as soon as Validus picks it up, avoid getting a mangled letter, treat, profit. While the tat-lung listened from afar, he figured to have a fairly decent grasp on the words "good", "get" and "hold", even though he wasn't the one being trained. Still, with the sphinx babbling on in between each take, he tried to pick up more and more of the errant words, match them to the thought patterns she was sending over at the same time, and above all.. remember all of that at the same time.
Not the easiest task for even brilliant minds, for the logic of it was easy, but the memory would require much more practise.

( Validus, Get - Scroll: 5 )
With the baseline established, it was time to get a bit more in depth to the actual purpose of the trick. For one, the mammalian started removing the treat from within the scroll, to avoid it becoming a tasty temptation to dismantle. As far as Validus was concerned, this was just as well, since he much rather preferred the treats the mammalian was giving straight from the bag anyway.
Next, she gradually started moving the scroll further and further, still well within sight of Validus, to ensure he could clock the location, but not so close as to be right next to him any more. Eventually, at some point in the future, the scrolls could be as far as whole different areas of the City, so he'll need to learn to locate one at a specific spot no matter the distance. After all, it would be a right shame if he was sent after a scroll, only to return with some random bag instead.

( Validus, Get - Scroll: 6 )
"Alright.. ready? Go Validus, get the scroll!" the sphinx released the gallor, as he dashed away towards the spot each time. This in itself worked well enough, at least in terms of part one of the equation - the gallor knew to reach the scroll, and he knew to pick it up in his beak. The part that came after, though? That one was a little more.. fuzzy.
Well, no matter, they'll get to that part eventually.
For now, she repeated the 'get to' part several times, switching up location and distance to ensure there was some randomness and variation. It didn't much help to have the gallor return here to the park any time he was sent after a message, after all. And to that point, they'll certainly need to work on location training in the future to really get the general idea stick properly, which was likely to be a whole other thing in itself (and requite a ton of walking/flying).

( Validus, Get - Scroll: 7 )
After a while, the gallor seemed to have the gist of the 'get to' part well enough, with only minor hiccups happening. The scroll got slight beak-damage in one instance, and nearly got dropped into a nettle patch in another, but those were largely growing pains. The positive side was that Validus was perfectly content to wait for the treat-from-hand rather than destroy the scroll itself.
With that sorted, it was time for the trickier part, which was 'get back with'. In hindsight the mammalian really should have thought about dealing with the whole 'come' command first, but they were already deep enough in the steps that interjecting something new was as likely to confuse the gallor as help. Most critters learned the stride and rhythm of training after a time, making it easier to teach and learn, but Validus was still quite fresh to the whole practise, so she needed to ease him into that mindset carefully.

( Validus, Get - Scroll: 8 )
So, no time like the present to improvise..
After the gallor had dashed off to pick up another scroll, the sphinx remained standing where she was at a distance. No sooner did Validus pick the scroll up and turn to look at her, that she crouched and held out the pouch of treats, "Alright, and now bring it back, Validus. C'mon, bring it." This prompted a tilt of the gallor's head and a blink of some very large, very curious yet confused eyes. This was new. And much like anything new, it took him a couple of seconds to process.
His solution was to drop the scroll and run back towards her, pesky paper thing forgotten, and tasty treat-to-be the only thing in his mind. "Ah, no, get the scroll, Validus!" the sphinx minded, putting the pouch out of sight before he even got close. To this the gallor stopped, even more confused. "C'mon, Validus. Get the scroll," the sphinx continued to urge.

( Validus, Get - Scroll: 9 )
Validus considered.. understanding that part well enough, although proverbially he had questions about the rest. Uncertainly, the cheeky turned, walking back to the scroll and picked it up, looking to her for validation. "Good! Now, bring it over," the sphinx smiled, producing the pouch again.
The cheeky tentatively walked towards her, this time scroll still in beak. Maybe because of happentances, or simply because he wasn't thinking about it, but regardless it was the result she was hoping for. "Good! Good, bring it over."
By the time the gallor reached her, she swapped the scroll for a treat and a considerable amount of praise. "Now, let's try that again.." And again. And again.. In Validus' defence, he got it more right than wrong, although the first couple of times were certainly more flukes than any real attempts. But, with enough repetition and reinforcement, the 'get back' part solidified itself in more certain terms, allowing the gallor to head out, pick up the scroll, and bring it back all in one smooth go.
Slight over-excited nibbling not-with-standing, at least. (10) Darky: 10 - (added) Validus: 2 (0/5)

That looked like quite the verbal workout, the tat-lung noted upon her return.
"You think?" the sphinx smirked, speaking as she was also thinking. She let Validus rest and enjoy the area for a time, while she and the agate caught up and reviewed their own little side of the lesson.
I assume, he chuckled with a ring of bells, At least, between what I could discern between speech and thought. You humanoids don't exactly make it very easy, you know.. So many complex sounds for such simple concepts.
"I suppose you tat-lung have a language that's easier, then?" the sphinx teased. Oh, considerably, the agate nodded sagely, in the way that he did when making fun. Admittedly so much is also down to gesture, body language, and a general comprehension of fundamental concepts, that not a lot needs to be said out loud to begin with.
"That might be something you can take Det up with," the sphinx sighed, leaned up against him. "His mind runs a mile a minute."

The agate's smile was a little forced for a moment, then slowly faded into an awkward expression, as he realized that last part wasn't entirely thought-spoken so much as spoken-spoken. He cleared his throat, Ah, hm.. a, uh, 'mile'?
The sphinx looked up to him, then blinked, and continued adding the thoughts alongside the spoken words, "Oh! I guess that one's a bit more, ah.. complicated. It's distance. About the length of the street from docks to far side of the market. Does that help?"
Relief washed over the tat-lung, as he nodded, Quiet, yes. You know, a lot of the base words are not that hard to understand.. it's the longer ones, and specifics with no root that seem.. finicky.
"If I say 'finicky' out loud, does that make it better?" the sphinx grinned, and although there was a roll of eyes, the tat-lung chuckled back. Perhaps.
