It was early in the morning, the sun only just beginning to crest the horizon. Given the changing seasons, the air was chilly, and Zenjesi was especially glad to have chosen a thicker capelet for this day's task: training. It seemed an inspired choice, given the mosca who would be today's subject had woken Zenjesi an hour ago by repeatedly kneading on their torso while they slept. Perhaps Zenjesi wasn't in the brightest mood, but at least they were committed to the task. The two of them paced down the park pathway, the satyr seeking a secluded place to settle in for some work. "Synkka," they whispered. The mosca padded along, tail swishing as she looked out across the park, paying no mind whatsoever to Zenjesi. "Synkka," the satyr tried again, more firmly. A moment later, the mosca looked over to the satyr, as if by coincidence. Zenjesi narrowed their eyes, but dropped a scrap of dried fish on the ground. Technically... that qualified as a reaction.

"You are being difficult," Zenjesi muttered to the mosca. "You recognize the sound of your name in the kennel. Or is that only when it is a meal time?" There was a momentary pause, wherein the mosca, naturally, did not respond. "Synkka," Zenjesi added for emphasis. The mosca's tail twitched, and then she became quite invested in sniffing a pebble found on the trail. Perhaps she recognized this was a repercussion of her earlier actions. Zenjesi could only hope the change of scenery would inspire her to also change her attitude. So far, it only seemed to be serving as an excuse to be distracted. "Synkka," Zenjesi called to urge the mosca onward. Reflexively, perhaps accidentally, the mosca glanced up to the satyr, then immediately turned her head away, realizing she had done exactly what was being asked. Zenjesi chuckled, offering another scrap of fish that the feline seemed to conveniently not notice as they walked on down the path.

After a moment, Zenjesi pocketed the fish again, shrugging one shoulder. The walk itself was proving itself relaxing with the crisp late-summer air and the relative quiet of the training grounds at this hour. Yes, the mosca had woken the satyr unreasonably early, but getting out here while there were fewer wandering eyes had its own advantages. From what Zenjesi had been learning in their brief time at the Labs, this was likely to be a popular location. However, finally, the two of them rounded a bend and Zenjesi's searching eyes pinned on a foot-worn path in the grass. Curious, they angled towards it. "Synkka," they urged the mosca, and, indeed, the mosca's attention did shift to the satyr, though perhaps that was a result of a gentle tug on the leash at the same moment. Ah. Zenjesi would have to be more careful. But perhaps that tug was what it was going to take. They offered the mosca a fish scrap, which was accepted this time.

It had been some time since they had walked the grounds of the public park. Unfortunately, it was a popular day and time to be present, it seemed. Many of the spaces they were pacing past were already occupied by others. It was clear some were there with humanoid company, while others had brought creatures as companions. Some were being trained, others were simply playing games. Many of the creatures Zenjesi could not identify.
As was their habit, they were accompanied by yet another deadly beast. This one, at least, was already more fond of them. This was a relief; while he was not so aggressive as Florian, his eyes suggested he possessed a slightly more calculating nature, which could be quite dangerous in its own way. As well, his affections reassured Zenjesi, given they would likely be in serious trouble if he decided to take flight, either by ground or air.

They had him in a harness and on a leash, but it felt more like a formality, or perhaps simply a reassurance to others. They supposed there was a chance that, if he were to escape them, the trailing leash would give them slightly increased odds of catching him again. But they were here today so that it would not come to that.
It was midday, and the sun was out, granting a warmth unusual for the season. They had intended to take advantage of that fact, but it seemed they were far from the only one. As they strode along the park's path with Lumi by their side, they spared him a few sidelong glances. His white fur and feathers were glistening in the sunlight. For the satyr who rarely spent time in the sun themselves, it was proving a task to even look directly at him. He seemed to be somehow aware of this.

His tail was swishing from side to side calmly, ears pivoting to take in the ambient sounds of creature calls and people calling to their pets. Sharp blue eyes were scanning everything they passed with a watchfulness that almost made Zenjesi wish they would have equipped him with an amulet of submission. They did not expect him to actually lunge for another creature (probably), but he was taking a concerning degree of interest in a few of the prey-like creatures, as well as another much smaller and more colorful Gallor.
"Lumi," they whispered to him, on one particularly distracting occasion. Thankfully, the quiet redirection was enough to turn him away, and he continued with Zenjesi. They were not overly familiar with Gallor and their body language yet, but it seemed to them that he was posturing while they walked, ruffling his wings and clacking his beak when they passed by other predatory species.

That was preferable to him actually initiating a physical conflict of some variety, so they did not interrupt this process. Besides, it was informative to them from a biological perspective. Their own keen eyes watched these behaviors and signs and began to catalogue them in their mind for later reference. It was a good opportunity to practice understanding body language, not only for Gallor but also for humanoid encounters in the future. Some of this would translate, would it not?
Regardless, they were beginning to grow disheartened with the popularity of the park; it seemed it was going to be difficult to find a private space for them to work with Lumi. The idea to seek out a quiet place had been inspired by their own introversion, but it was becoming increasingly apparent that he would struggle to focus on them or their direction with all of these distractions milling around him.

Thus, it was with some relief that they finally discovered the subtle footpath worn into the grass. They had traveled this way with Synkka some time ago. Though they had not been able to stay long on that occasion, it seemed some unconscious part of their mind recollected where they had walked that day, and had led them to it once more. Or perhaps they were just a creature of predictable habits.
Regardless, they did not hesitate, leading Lumi off of the paved path with some quiet mumbling. The clicking of his claws fell silent as they passed onto dirt, and his own attention was finally diverted from the other patrons of the park. His ears began to flick around again, head pivoting in different directions as it seemed he recognized this as an intriguing detour and was keen to assess their changing surroundings. The path led them around a tree, and behind the cover of tall, decorative bushes.

The satyr paused for just a moment before rounding the bend, first leaning forward to peer around it. It seemed the space promptly opened up into a little clearing, ringed on three sides by plant growth and on the fourth by the back side of some sort of storage building. Whatever it was did not have windows, and thus left the area quite secluded. All was quiet. Or so they thought, but they had run out of time to evaluate. Lumi was no longer going to wait for them.
He strutted around the corner and into the open space, head still turning on a swivel. Within a moment, he had reached the end of the leash, but despite his size and strength, he had at least an ounce of respect for Zenjesi and lowered his head to sniff at something in the dirt instead of pulling them off of their hooves.

They quickly trotted to catch up, deciding it best not to test his patience immediately. Unfortunately, this rapid movement did stir up something else; a bird, startled by the sudden tapping of hoofbeats, took flight above their heads. With a feline reaction time, Lumi's attention was fixed on it, his ice blue eyes tracking, calculating -- Zenjesi felt their heart skip a beat. They lunged forward, attempting to reel in as much of the leash as possible before the inevitable. But Lumi was far faster than they were.
He crouched, his wings suddenly flared open, and he leaped upwards after it. "No!" Zenjesi cried out helplessly. The leash had been looped once around their wrist, and they braced themselves for the sensation of being lifted off the ground by the joint, but... Lumi did not take flight. It was not a symptom of the length of the leash, or Zenjesi's "strength."

Rather, the satyr watched as all four of his feet left the earth. His wings beat down once... and then they began to flap awkwardly and out of sync, resulting in more of a desperate flailing before he crashed back down. It was not a painful landing, but it was a bit of a sad one. He opened his beak, letting out a shrill cry after the little bird that had long since vanished. His wings ruffled, then folded on his back.
Zenjesi cocked their head. They had been worried he would lift them away, but he could not fly. Their brow furrowed as they watched him pacing back and forth, standing up on his hind legs for a moment in one last effort to catch a glimpse of the fleeing shape. This was an unexpected revelation. They supposed it could have been an injury or other issue preventing him from taking flight.

They unraveled the extra length of leash from their grasp, stepping slowly towards their Gallor with reassuring hands outstretched. "Lumi, you must let me look," they implored him. Finally, if reluctantly, he turned his attention away from his lost prey to Zenjesi. His beak clacked once in acknowledgment, while he looked over them curiously. His attention was fixed on their hands, apparently expecting a snack.
Though of course they had brought treats for use in his training today, that was not their intent just yet. They reached out, carefully placing one hand on one of his wings. He instinctively pulled back, rustling it and tilting his head at them. Whispering quiet, soothing words, Zenjesi tried again, and this time, he allowed them to get both hands into his feathers, where they searched for any sign of wounds, new or old. Again, they were not overly familiar with Gallor, but encountered nothing that seemed out of place.

The second would need to be reviewed as well. By the end of their search of the first, he had become accustomed to their parting of his feathers and prodding of his joints. As they moved to begin the examination of the second, he had grown weary of it. He tugged away from them a few times before he became distracted enough by the distant sounds of children screaming for Zenjesi to manage at least an attempt at a similar assessment. There was nothing to find there either.
They thought back to his attempt a few minutes prior. All signs indicated he had intended to take flight; they doubted it would have looked so awkward if he had merely meant to leap. Research had told them that creatures rarely exhibited outward signs of pain, but he had not done anything that would suggest that had been the case anyway. It simply looked... juvenile.

It was as if he had never been taught to fly. Was such a thing possible? Zenjesi supposed it must be; they had no knowledge of his youth. It did not seem he had been trained to respond to any other commands, but he was not feral, so he must have been raised near one or more humanoids. This seemed a bit sad to them, though things operated strangely here at the Labs. Perhaps this was commonplace. Still, they desired for him to have the opportunity.
Besides, there had been whispers of a battle tournament beginning soon. They were curious about this event. Certainly, at least two of their Bulldozers would relish the opportunity to sink their teeth into something, but they were too young and little to be eligible. There were not many in their care who were eligible. But Lumi was, and seeing how he interacted with the other beasts at the park convinced Zenjesi that he too would enjoy a scrap.
