After a few moments she heard a deadly snarl and glanced back at the pool of light, feeling her way along the rocks. The sarane was awake, and by now she could tell from the long horns that it was a drake. Great. It was even more deadly, then. But at least it wasn't defending eggs, which would be even more of an issue. As it prowled towards the flashlight she snuck around the side of the nest, realizing that if she tried to climb it she would no doubt send down a shower of pebbles that would alert it to her presence instantly. Instead she was able to reach around, grab the case, and bail out... until she heard a distinct croaking noise. She had forgotten about Moxie. She turned around and saw her kito standing over the flashlight, croaking loudly as he moved into a battle posture, flaring out his leaves.

Emery was an idiot. Of course Moxie was going to try and defend the flashlight- it was something of hers, and he was precisely stupid enough to think that was a good idea. She had to move out before he got hurt. She dashed across the floor as much as she could, trying not to trip on any of the smaller rocks that the sarane had knocked loose. "Moxie! Follow me!" She said, stumbling towards the floor and grabbing his lead. She pulled him as hard as she could, trying to get him away from the flashlight. "No! Follow me! Just leave it!" She begged. Now she could see the sarane in full view, and it was furious at her presence, pupils narrowed to slits as it bared all of its teeth at her. And oh, what pearly whites they were. Emery refused to stay any longer. She turned and ran.

She felt heat on the back of her neck as she fled, and in that moment she knew that Moxie had let out a plume of flame at the sarane. She couldn't hesitate now to see if he was still following her, but she hoped that the flame had at least surprised the sarane long enough for them to get away. Within a few moments though she heard another terrifying roar, and the cave rattled concerningly around her. She fumbled with her head and finally turned on the head lamp again, illuminating the crack in the wall ahead of her where they had come from. It was far too tight and cramped for the sarane to follow in behind them. If they could just make it through, they'd be ok. Perhaps she spoke too soon though, as Emery soon heard a whistling noise over her head, followed by an impact.

Huge chunks of stone fell to the ground around her as the black sarane pulled its club tail back for another blow. "Moxie, follow me!" She called out again, desperate for her pet to keep up. Just a few more steps. Just a few more steps and then- she was in. Emery scrambled into the tunnel like a squirrel into a tree, shoving herself as far in as possible. She felt hot breath on the back of her neck as she moved, and for a moment she panicked, thinking the sarane had managed to get in with her. But then she realized just how hot the breath was, and realized it was Moxie. "Moxie?" She asked questioningly, and heard and exhausted chirp behind her. "Good boy." She said, and kept shuffling through the tunnel. Finally they came out into a more open area, and Emery immediately flopped on the ground, exhausted.

She looked up at Moxie. He looked no worse for wear either. Heavily agitated from the sarane's aggression and a bit scuffed up from the tight squeeze back through yes, but not injured. Thank goodness for that. They weren't done yet though- Emery could hear the sarane's angry shrieks through the tunnel and the scratch of claws on stone as it tried to dig them out. "Come on Moxie. Let's get out of here." She said, rising to her feet again and taking his lead once more. They were ahead right now, but the sarane likely knew other ways to get around its territory- they had to leave before it remembered they existed. But it could guard its home all it wanted- they had what they came here for. The hard part was over and done with, now all Emery and Moxie had to do was get out with their prize alive.
