Finally, somewhere they knew they could work in peace and familiarity. Many things changed in the world, but the feeling of dirt on the fingers did not. The labs gave them these gardens to till and to work, and Aura knew what they wanted out of this place. Their parcel was sectioned off by hedges as tall as they were, but other than that, there was only a broken greenhouse and a sprawl of weed-infested soil. They had quite the project ahead of them to get it remotely prepared for any kind of growth. This was their field of expertise, however, and they had a step by step plan of what they would have to do before moving in the garden animals they'd acquired.
They closed the gate behind them, though left it unlatched; there was no telling how many times they'd have to leave to throw things out or get something like new panes of glass. The first place Aura intended to start was the greenhouse; it would be where the animals stayed, and the sooner it was done, the sooner they could move them in.
It was a fairly small greenhouse, but the way that the summer sun filtered through the glass kept the inside heated to a sweltering degree. Thankfully, they were built for this; the warmth soaked into their scales. They just had to be careful about being in it too long, or it could burn them; the downside of their dark scales. They let their hair out of its ties briefly, drawing it back up as best they could, and set to work. They had large planters to set up against the back wall, first, for the larger creatures. They sat on one of the tables, taking apart one of the packages and starting to fit the pieces together. Whoever made the gardens had completely idiot-proofed the plant creature cages; they all snapped together in a way that would be impossible to mess up...

It had to be the more difficult time of keeping critters for the fiery colored ssashirk. Joone brought a sense of great energy to the creatures of his garden. For some though, it brought a streak of mischief. Perhaps he just wanted to escape being an extra warm climbing post for the pachee clan; maybe to avoid the almost sickeningly sweet smell of finding an overripe mushroom on the mjusi that hadn't decomposed yet in the compost pile. Whatever the cause, Castor had up and hopped the fence. More like climbed over. He'd simply hopped off, caught his weight with his wings, and shuffled off down the path. A mixture of Tumai and learned common words mushed themselves into Flare's hushed tongue as he abandoned his attempts to tighten the canvas on his nearby hovel. Unlike the dragonoak, he wasn't fast at reclimbing fences. Instead forced to take the gate, his rush made slippery fingers on attempting to open the gates and pursue the drake. He wasn't a sarane to chase down, thank the gods, but still Castor had no markings of ownership to the ssashirk. Almost spitting under his breath, he hobbled at speed down the path. Colliding with Castor whom had stopped at a midsection. Those leaf wings had edges, he'd have to remember that. Backing off a bit, Flare rubbed at his scraped scales; unhurt. Pain signals ran up and down through his legs for having to hobble so fast after the oak; who was watching something over the fence with rapt interest. On chance, he glanced over too.
This wasn't Haix...? The individual had scales almost as dark as Castor's, with a very fluffy tail and mane. He'd only seen such volume of hair on twittery females. Who was this? 2.5 10.20

The sound of footsteps alerted them to the presence of others, and they jerked their head up from the half-assembled box. They locked eyes with the other ssashirk, first, eyebrows raising a bit. So, there were others similar to them here. Their eyes drifted, next, to the dragonoak...a creature they had also never seen. They were still new to the area, however, and so they were frequently seeing creatures they'd had the misfortune to miss before then. "What is that?" They asked, pointing at the creature. The question was obviously directed at Flare. No introductions, no "hello-how-do-you-do"- they presumed that the courtesies normal about the labs would not be shared by their own kind. They also presumed that the other would not enjoy small talk; it was the way of Aura's home culture.
It took them too long to realize they were wearing little, only a pair of shorts that were some kind of strange material they'd never run into before, and a leather covering for their chest they'd been told was called a tube top. The diagonal white scars on their thighs and arms were visible; they hadn't thought they'd need to cover them up in this place. They exhaled, and held their head high; Aura dared this stranger to mention their role.

From what angle he could see, the dark scaled ssashirk appeared to be building something. Assembling a box? He wasn't quite sure. Perhaps taking the box apart, but it didn't appear to be broken. A cold chill rolled down his spine from the other's stare. Granted, if he wasn't partially hunched, he was quite tall in the limb himself. The ssashirk spoke, pointing at Castor. "Dwagon twee. Oaff. Dwagon oaff." he responds, motioning to the distracted drake. He's leaning on the fence to this one's garden, standing on his toes to get a better look. If he were quick about it, Flare could capture the drake from behind, and carry him back to the garden. Without any markings or tags or whatever sort of ownership thing the gardens used to keep track of anyone elses wayward beasties, he feared Castor being taken away for simply escaping. Why did he let his gaze drop then. A flush rises in his already orange-red scales. The dark scaled ssashirk (and hell if he could tell male or female or whatever) wore more then he did at present. A simple straw sunhat, with holes for his horns to drop over the brim, and literally nothing else. He points at the box. "Maffing?" 3.5 11.20

Only then did they notice his state of dress, and felt validated in their opinion of so called 'modesty'; if someone hadn't gotten onto them for being unclothed when they'd first arrived, they'd likely be in the same state. They looked down at the box they were assembling, and then leaned over, picking up the packaging it had come in. It resembled an aquarium, only, much deeper for plant pets to bury their roots. "Cages. Just moved here," They answered. Their accent was still there, noticeable, though hard to place. Their consonants were harder, their tongue struggling on the 's'. They put the box aside, approaching towards the dragonoak. At their full height, 6'5, they might have been intimidating to others- especially pets- but once they got close to Castor, they kneeled, offering out their hand for him to come sniff.
Aura glanced towards the garden one over from their's, not moving any farther in case they startled the creature that seemed so interested. "Is that yours?" They ask, meaning the garden. They'd wondered if they would run into anyone who also worked around here.

So there were more newcomers in the metal city. Flare angled his head slightly, now able to see the idea of a 'cage' with this strange box. What could live in a box with no walls? Until the sun glinted off of a face... oh, glass. He knew glass. It made drinkwares and delicate things that caught the light in ways that Tumai women fought each other to buy when in stock. "I new to metal citee too." he points at himself. The ssashirk has approached him now, approached Castor. For some reason, Castor's all attention on the dark scaled one instead of the worm-feeding ssashirk beside him, who chased after him when he escaped. He's leaning far as he can manage without toppling forward, practically on tiptoes, to sniff the others hand. Earthy, metallic... a hint of something else the drake could not place. And he liked it. His entire rear end, tail included, wags eagerly, putting his snout into their palm. How strange, Flare had never seen the dragonoak so friendly with ANYONE or anything; not that he'd been socialized. The ssashirk points off towards his own plot of land. With the slowly decaying pile of compost and what not. "Yess, my fflot. My gawden." {Bustani.} he replies, pointing at his own plot. That was his garden. Bustani stood for garden in Tumai. 4.5 12.20

They idly scratched along the side of Castor's cheek and chin, careful to be gentle. If all of these creatures were like this, they wanted one of their own; they were quite adorable. They had a particular affection for all dragon-like creatures, anyway, and being called dragonoak certainly gave him a few extra points. "I have not named this garden yet. I wish to see it earn its name, as I did." The accent was different, and the word that followed was familiar, though they did not know it. A different civilization than their own, then. He would not know of their markings and what they meant. They allowed themself to relax, if only for a moment. "I was called Aura; what are you called?"
It was a relief, to not be alone in being new to this strange culture. It was oddly comforting to see someone else struggling with it all. They were lucky they'd known the language already, but this one clearly had not been so privileged. They were aware that this other must have been chasing Castor, and intended to keep him distracted as long as possible so he could be reclaimed by his owner.

Flare might only have been around the dragon tree creature for a small while, but he'd seen this sort of behavior with small pets previously in his lifetime. It was a ploy to promote jealousy from their masters; wouldn't 'they' like to be where the creature was, getting all scratches and affection with an attractive wo/man. Not going to work on Flare, who barely interacted enough to be comfortable with starter conversation. But the ssa is talking again. To see the garden earn its name. He nods in agreement. HIs own plot is not named, but his hovel was. It gave the partially pitched desert style tent a homely feel. "Flare. I am Flare." he points to his bare chest, indicating himself. Castorrrr." he points down at the eagerly scratched dragonoak. Who seems more then happy with this getting scratches. Entirely distracted. Not wanting to waste the opportunity, he stoops and grabs the drake oak around the middle when the other ssa stops scratching. {Asante. Thank you} he tells the ssa once the drake is in his grip. What would one do... Lets see. He'd not had a neighbor since he was young. "Talk to Wawden at front. Buee wiff Gawden shoff. Sell pachee. Ffollen cats. Vewy ...quick." he couldn't think how to pronounce energetic. At least his were. 5.5 5/11 13.20

Seeing the dragonoak firmly in the arms of his owner, they stood back up, listening to him. "Well met, Flare," they responded, with a quick place of their hand over their heart. Different cultures, yes, but similar enough that they felt less alone in this strange place. They returned to where they were sitting, resuming assembling the cage that they had been working on before he had come to capture his runaway. "I will do so once this garden is prepared for living beings. I already have enough plants that can not put down roots in the metal building." They answered, though there was a tiny bit more warmth to their voice than there had been before. "I thank you for your advice. You and your companions are welcome here whenever you like; it is good to see someone...like me." They knew he was not from their homeland, considering he had not reacted to the markings he could see- but he was not one of the many humans that were so common in this place, either, and that still gave them a slightly better alliance.

Let him tell one, its difficult to repeat the Tumai gesture of respect when one's hands are filled with squirming dragonoak. The plant found himself both captured and no longer being given attention by the attractive dark one. Wait! Please come back! He makes a strangled shrieky noise, trying to break the drake's grip. However two little claw fingers vs a full five digit grip, the dragonoak seemed bound to lose. But he wants to get attention from the attractive dark one! Let go! His neck twists about, trying to nab Flare's exposed arms. A sharp poke around his abdominal region, no, more along the lines of several sharp pokes of claws make it difficult to keep squirming. Finally, Flare managed to stand, with the drake in his arms. Snapping and trying to bite him, like a disobedient small dog. Yes, he would like to come again. "I will comee again. Well met Auwa." He nods and turns to leave. For Castor seemed much more willing to pay his neighbor Auwa a visit then stick around his own enclosed garden. It may come to needing a leash or a rope. -exit- 1.5 14.20

(11) As soon as Flare left, they located the carrot and the weird...potato thing. Deciding they wanted to waste no more time in acquiring one of those creatures, they departed, and returned with one of them trailing behind them. They'd named him Jandar, and though he was wary of them, he seemed content enough to wander around in the locked garden. They figured just its proximity to them would be enough to get it to start to trust. As soon as he was off leash, he was investigating the overgrown parts of the field that Aura had yet to touch. They shook their head, returning to the greenhouse and the half-assembled cage. They brought the kits outside, sitting on the ground to watch Jandar as they worked. They just had to get the basics built for now; after that, they intended to make the cages like terrariums for their inhabitants. That would require some investigation on what habitats were best for each critter, but they were worth it.

With the first of the cages assembled, they rested it to one side, and opened the box for the next one. Fitting together the wood and the glass wasn't too difficult; it kept just their hands occupied while they watched the dragonoak move around the land. He was sniffing at the various weeds and grasses, occasionally nibbling them. The sunlight warmed his skin, and he gave a little flutter of his wings, basking in the glow of the summer. He had a good life living in Alura's shop, but there was something...special about this further freedom. He sunk his claws into the dirt, lening forward to dig at the ground. This was his home, instead of just... a transitional, smaller garden.
Aura was pleased to watch him; he was so interesting. He was like a plant version of them, only winged, and green. It was yet another call to the home they sometimes missed, though with the aspects of the new that they loved so much.

They made quick work of the wooden parts of the cages, fitting together the slats just as the diagrams indicated. The glass was next, and finally the top, with its lamps and latches for them to keep the creatures in or pull them out. They believed they'd acquired enough for all the ones who would need it, and in the right sizes. Their list of what they wanted was not infinite, after all. With that set, they retrieved the bags of dirt that they'd placed aside for this purpose, and opened up a book that they'd picked up about the various lab creatures. The lotine Aura had would go in the pond they were installing later; they skipped over that portion. The largest one would be housing their King of the Evergreen; starting there was probably the best option...
Jandar stopped digging, keeping his nose to the dirt and sniffing around. This place had been tilled long ago; barely any of the lines were left. Only a large, overgrown field remained. There was so much to explore.
