If nothing else, the hens seemed to take on an opinion of their own younger than Lethalia would've originally thought. They were easier, but less blindly mindful of the one who 'broke' them. Surely drakes had just as varied personalities as the heap of hens the woman had begun to rear, just as different as the three boys she'd raised. After Rimefang she'd been loathe to take a chance on another drake growing up soured on her. This time with Zhaleh felt a little bit like reclaiming what she should've developed with her first shining prize. She wouldn't mess this one up, she wouldn't be like Rime. Juniper didn't grow up particularly nice, but still leagues better than her predecessor. The way Zha lounged in her arms now, perhaps all hope wasn't lost on the tundra dwellers. These pallid creatures being pretty was an awful reason to keep trying them, but Leth never claimed not to be vain. August|13

Perhaps she'd even get an agreeable white someday, if she poured enough of her efforts into the lineage. Whishful thinking, perhaps. But she was more than stubborn enough to continue clinging onto that original idea and spark of hope - especially instead of admitting she might be wrong. "Y'can try 'gain inside..." Lethalia murmured to the hatchling, absent mindedly keeping a running conversation with herself like she always did. One day she might get a critter smart enough to benefit from her chatter, but that wasn't today. Zhaleh blinked slowly at the satyr's rumbling, then looking past her and craning her neck upwards to look at the building as they approached. Lethalia walked beneath a nautical-striped awning hanging in front of the door, getting a little squeak from Zha who apparently wasn't done looking. "Mo' interestin' on th'inside, promise." Well, she didn't know that for a fact, but it sounded good. August|14

For all the bravado she opened the door with, Lethalia deflated upon sighting just inside. How could she possibly forget the plank? She'd only fallen - more accurately, Juniper had only pushed them - into the ravine below. Then the ceiling just collapsed, and a wee tidal wave swept them both clear into the next holiday. The memory of that happening had been shoved so far into the corner of her mind she hadn't even remembered to avoid the mansion while the plank was in place. At a demanding squeal and wiggle, the satyr came back to the present enough to pin the hatchling taking advantage of a lax grip. Leth sucked in a breath, letting it out with a stream of profanity at the hen's sudden spiritedness. Was it the mansion? Of course a normally sleepy baby chose to become opinionated at the least convenient moment. Zhaleh lv|6 ly|6 August|15

"Gettin' o'er this, n'then y'can run amok 'gain," Lethalia drawled to the hatchling, though it did nothing to take away her inspiration to make an escape. Still, saying they were going to make it across it felt like it would help to manifest that reality. The satyr might have muttered a few choice names to the hen baby, but none with much gusto. Talking and cursing had a way of calming her down, and along with a few deep breaths brought her hammering heart down to a more manageable level. The less she could manage to look down, the more okay this would turn out. Alongside with pushing the memory of last time out of her head - the thought made her dizzy enough without having to look down below. Zhaleh wasn't helping, but she wasn't big enough to be a real hinderance. As long as Leth could keep her arms around her. August|16

In spite of all of her efforts otherwise, the first hoof on the plank rocketed her concerned mind into overdrive. They could fall again and be swept straight into September - what time of month was it? Was she here late? It would be worse if she dropped the white sarane, because then of course she'd have to go diving after her... this one didn't swim either, shit... From time to time, a racing mind could be useful. Zhaleh's demanding squeal jostled the satyr out of her mindless prey-brain racing in order to adjust her grip on the hatchling. Only.. when she happened to glance down, she was already on solid ground. Looking blankly over her shoulder, Lethalia found she'd already made her way across the plank. Her mind had filled the moments it took to cross, drew out the seconds until they felt like a slog. "We're here!" Leth announced. August|17

The woman would like to assume Zha wasn't smart enough for her hollow look to be judgemental, but it sure seemed like it was. "Nothin' happened. Lessgo," she smoothed over, reaching for the doorknob with uncharacteristic speed. Normally it took a lot to talk herself into the mansion, but a blow to the ego could quicken things. She could prove she wasn't afraid of the place! Leth yanked open the door. "...Oh," was all she could provide, unable to prevent herself from stopping in place to gawk. This was greener than any forest she'd ever been in. A hot exhalation of humidity whisked through the opened door, roiling into mist on the just-barely cooler platform. As would be expected for the season, waves broke over the beach somewhere nearby and the scent of salt salt thickly laced the air. Try as she might to peer around for danger, there wasn't much to see. August|18

Though one could hear the cries of what could be birds (or something else) it was near impossible to land eyes on the noisemaker. Grown so thick and green overhead, the canopy gave no hints of it's populace to prying eyes. Lethalia had quite little experience with jungles, and they seemed like bad news for the unprepared from any stories she'd heard. Did she really care to deal with the mansion's likely more savage rendition of one? Zhaleh took up her struggles shortly after the surprise subsided, doubling down on the fact that she needed out! "Yeah, guessin' I did say tha' y'coul explore some," Lethalia admitted the squirmy hatchling, taking the leash up in hand and looking left and right just inside of the doorway again. It... looked safe enough, right here. But hell... something like an entire green drake could be hiding behind those fronds and she wouldn't even know. August|19

Dubious as she was about letting the tiny thing out on her own, a little while should be fine, right? Let Zhaleh get her wiggles out and then get out of here before something did find them. With how much the hatchling was struggling, Leth stood little chance of keeping hold on her anyway. She loosened her grip and helped the hen down as much as she would allow, because she was quite ready to simply launch herself out of her captor's arms. Lethalia managed a hand beneath the hatchling's barrel to safely pick her up and set her on the ground, teasing as she did, "Not qui' th'same sleepin' baby now, huh?" Zha shook herself well to rid her pristine scales of hyooman-touch, shooting the satyr a dirty look as she did. "Soo-ry, princess," she chortled, as she probably had to all of her other previous hens. These creatures had that air about them. Zhaleh lv|7 ly|7 August|20
