It was a bright and sunny day that Fiera found herself training a houluh on. The heat had grown almost intolerable for many of her creatures, and Fiera was glad that Penny had such a short coat in comparison to some of her houluh. She tanced around Fiera, yapping with her bright and coppery bark, the sound no doubt traveling for dozens of feet. Fiera wanted to make good use of that bark, but she couldn't think of anything to do with it quite yet. Ah well, perhaps something would come to her later. For now, Fiera had a day of simple training in mind, teaching Penny the basics and maybe a few extras if she had time to squeeze it in. As of right now it was still early morning, but the heat and humidity were already rising such that Fiera was glad she had chosen to wear shorts and a tee shirt. Fiera 6 Penny 8.1/18.1 Name 1 |

The first trick she wanted to teach Penny was, of course, her name. It was the easiest way to get a creature that was new to training into the flow of it, to introduce them to the concepts of command words and rewards for good behavior. Penny was already pretty easy going, if a little eager. That was pretty standard for young houluh however, and Fiera was sure she would pick up the details quickly. "Penny!" She called, watching the pup sniff around the bottom of a bush, perhaps catching the scent of another houluh that had come near. Either way, she wasn't paying much attention to Fiera quite yet. "Penny, look over here!" She said, trying to catch her attention. When Penny still didn't look up, Fiera took a deep breath and tried again, even louder than before. That finally seemed to work, and the houluh glanced up, her bright blue eyes peering at the humanish.

"There's a good girl, Penny!" Fiera said, making sure to use the pup's name as much as possible. She tossed Penny a treat from her pocket. They were little hard treats, similar to kibble, but flavored much more strongly than Penny's usual food to make them extra appealing. They were light, not too unhealthy, and easy to shove into a pocket so Fiera greatly enjoyed having them around. Of course, her pet seemed to greatly enjoy them too, wagging her tail as hard as she could as she leapt upon it, snatching it up in her mouth in an instant and taking a few fallen leaves with it. "Oh, don't- mm, too late." Fiera cringed as her puppy ate several crusty old leaves. At least she was getting the extra fiber...? Fiera decided to move on and not think about it all that hard. She still had training to do.

When Penny had finished eating, Fiera gave her a moment to stop paying attention and to keep snuffling around at the ground. It didn't take too long considering the attention span most houluh had, and soon Fiera was free to try the trick again. "Penny!" She called sweetly, only for her pet to not respond. Fiera sighed slightly. "Penny-" She said, but before she could finish talking, Penny looked up, as if operating on a delayed reaction. "Well... I suppose you taking a while is better than never reacting at all. Good girl, Penny!" Fiera said, throwing the pup another treat for her trouble. She was sure that Penny could do better than that, but improvement was improvement no matter how slowly. She was doing just fine for now. Penny crunched happily as Fiera let her wander around a bit more, waiting for her to lose focus on the humanish.

As before, it didn't take too long. Still, Fiera gave it a bit of extra time just in case, perhaps trying to soothe her own nerves about it. She had never had a creature that had NEVER managed to learn its name, but she supposed there was a first time for everything. After a while, Fiera could put it off no longer however and finally spoke up. "Penny, look over here!" She said cheerily, trying to maintain a casual tone of voice. To her relief, Penny looked up at her, a leaf still stuck to her nose from where she was sniffing about. A smile crept onto Fiera's face. Why did she ever worry? It never seemed to do her any good. "Good job, Penny." She said, giving the houluh a pat on the head, which Penny leaned into happily. Her first trick had been learned- a very good sign for the future.

Of course, Fiera wasn't about to stop training now, so early in the day. There was still more she wanted to teach Penny, if the pup was willing to listen. Well... in this case, she would HAVE to listen. Fiera was going to teach her the meaning of "no" next, and it wasn't always a lesson pets wanted to learn. In fact, it was something that no pet wanted to learn. But discipline was something that Fiera had to impress on all of her creatures no matter what, as not all of them stayed small, cute, and easily pushed around. Even if houluh didn't get all too big, Fiera still had every intention of showing Penny someday, and she doubted that the judges would be very appreciative of a rowdy and rude dog. Fiera knew that she wouldn't be, so teaching Penny 'no' was next on the docket for their training session today.

Thankfully, this one wasn't too hard to teach- even if it was hard for creatures to come to learn. All she needed was a treat and her own hand. Sometimes she would use a different tool, but with houluh it was safe enough to use one's bare hands. She crouched down in front of Penny and even before she got anything out the houluh came trotting over, curious about what Fiera had in store for her. She sniffed around Fiera, but quickly trotted to the humanish's front when she got out the treats. "Yeah, hang on a minute." Fiera said as she shook one out into the palm of her hand. Penny caught scent of it immediately and thankfully stayed distracted by that treat in the hand as opposed to the whole bag of them that the humanish quickly shoved back into her back pocket. "Oh, you want it, don't you?" Fiera said.

"Well, you can't have it. Not yet that is." She said, and pointed at the treat. "Penny, no." She said, setting up the command word for her houluh. Penny, of course, didn't listen. She had no frame of reference to know what Fiera was talking about after all, and a treat in range of her mouth was a treat she was going to eat. As she lunged forward to grab it however, she found Fiera's fingers in the way as the humanish closed them around the treat. "Penny, NO." She repeated, stronger this time, and the houluh pup backed off, surprised at the strong tone of voice. Fiera didn't often talk like that- not to her pets at least. The people she met in her day to day got a much more frequent view of her nastier side. For Penny however, this was a new thing- clearly she had done something wrong.

Fiera gave Penny a moment to collect herself and to let the shock of being scolded wear off. Once it was clear she wasn't going to make another try for Fiera's fingers however, the humanish opened her hand up again. "Good girl, Penny! Good no!" She said, offering the pup the treat. Penny hesitated for a moment, but ultimately her desire for tasty food outweighed her hesitance after that strong message she had been given. While she chewed that piece, crunching loudly, Fiera got out the bag of treats again. She turned so Penny couldn't see what she was doing and placed another one on her palm so she could try again. "Alright Penny, you ready?" She said, turning to her pup. Penny had finished eating the treat Fiera had given her, and was now ready to try again- for better or for worse. Fiera was hoping it would be better, of course.

The humanish gave the trick another try. She held her hand out, the treat in plain sight on the palm of her hand. Penny sniffed towards it curiously, and it was clear the houluh had picked up on its presence. Fiera didn't waste her time once that became clear, and she pointed at the treat with her other hand. "Penny, no." She said, not raising her voice quite yet. She didn't have to however, as the houluh puppy immediately sat back down on her haunches, remembering how badly this went last time. Fiera waited for a few moments to see if she would change her mind, but she didn't. Fiera smiled- perfect! That was just what she wanted. "Good girl, Penny! Good no!" She said, and tossed the treat at Penny's paws. Despite her previous discipline, it broke down once the trick was released, and she pounced on it with just as much vigor as before.

Fiera gave Penny a few more moments to finish her treat. It looked like she still had plenty of energy despite learning a couple tricks so far, so Fiera decided to train something next that would reward that energy... or at least make good use of it. She glanced around. She and Penny were currently in the middle of a trail through a forested part of the public park. The leafy trees above them kept the majority of the heat off of them, and the trail itself was soft and covered in fallen leaves and sand. It was somewhat narrow, but luckily Fiera hadn't seen anyone else come down it yet- perhaps they were here too early for other people to bother being up and about yet. It would do for teaching Penny "come". For now though, Penny was distracted, snuffling around under some fallen leaves. Fiera could make use of that.

The humanish took the opportunity provided by Penny's focus being on something else to back up a few feet, glancing over her shoulder to make sure she wasn't tripping over anything on the way. When she was about ten feet from her pet, she called out. "Penny! Come here, girl!" Penny's head perked up at the sound of her name, but the other command was as of yet unfamiliar to her. Curious as to how Fiera got all the way over there, she trotted over to the humanish, kicking up little bits of leaves as she did so. "Oh, good come!" Fiera said, giving her praise while repeating the command. She pat Penny on the head, but also offered her a treat from the little pouch she had been carrying about. THAT got Penny's attention- a special piece of food just for coming over? Something truly interesting must have been happening.

Penny happily accepted the food from Fiera, and it didn't take long for the humanish to stand up and back up again, this time ending up a little bit further down the path than before. Penny didn't notice the change until Fiera had already stopped. The pup tilted her head curiously, wondering what it was that Fiera was up to. "Penny, come!" She called again. This time though, Fiera simply being further away wasn't enough to get her to come over. Fiera sighed, and held up a treat. Penny sniffed the air, and it was as if a light switch had been flicked on in her brain as she bounded down the path again. "That's more like it!" Fiera said as the houluh practically skidded to a stop at her feet. "Good come, Penny!" Fiera said, tossing the treat down to her once again. She happily grabbed it out of the air.

It looked like Penny was starting to get the hang of things, but after a certain point Fiera knew she would get too far away for Penny to smell the treat in her hand, and she wouldn't always be holding one either. Penny needed to learn to come when she heard Fiera call, not just because she thought the humanish was holding food. She pet Penny idly as she thought about it. Still, Penny seemed to be slowly getting the hang of it, and definitely realized that the word meant SOMETHING to do with coming over. Fiera just had to hope she was clever enough to put two and two together. "What do you think, Penny? Are you clever enough?" She said, leaning over to look the houluh in the eye. She simply licked her lips and barked twice before a leaf fell on her head. She barked again and twisted around, trying to catch it.

That gave Fiera the opportunity she needed to slip away again, backing off down the trail once more as Penny spun and snapped at the encroaching piece of greenery. This time she backed up nearly twenty feet away. With no breeze, it would be impossible for Penny to tell if she was holding any food, and the pieces of treat were DEFINITELY too small to identify by sight, if Penny's eyes were even good enough for that. Fiera cupped her hands around her mouth. "Penny! Come here!" She called, letting her voice reverberate down the trail. The houluh finally looked up, glancing around before seeing Fiera. There was a moment of hesitation as she seemed to stop and identify her owner... before she started up running down the trail toward Fiera. "Oh, good girl!" Fiera chuckled, kneeling down to greet her as she approached. Well, it seemed like she had gotten the hang of that.
