When Savitri climbed into Fiera’s hand again, it seemed less out of excitement (though he was still very much excited) and more calculating. It was as if a little lightbulb had gone off in his head, and he realized something important. When Fiera got ready to throw him again, she felt the seryn shift, adjusting himself to get a better angle. When the humanish launched him again, he already had his wings out, no intervention from her necessary. Now as he flew forward, Fiera could see him twitching them too, as if trying to get a better angle to make the glide last for as long as possible. His tail still flopped wildly though- he was trying, but that didn’t mean he was good at it, and he fell back into the pond not much further in than his last attempt. It didn’t seem to dampen his mood however, as he instantly rushed back over to Fiera.

“Woah okay dude, I’m not going anywhere.” Fiera protested as the seryn clammily attempted climbing her leg after leaping out of the water, slapping fins against increasingly soaked pants. She picked him up, trying not to drop him like a bar of wet soap. He was eager to keep trying, that was for sure. Fiera hefted him up again and he smacked her in the face with a fin before she could even finish pulling her arm back, already getting himself into position. “Alright, let’s try this again. Savitri, fly!” She commanded, and launched him forward in a straight line, like she was throwing a spear. He kept his wings and tail taught this time, making only little twitches to adjust his course. Fiera smiled- he was really starting to get the hang of this. It wasn’t true flight of course, but he was definitely getting used to air currents and how to deal with them.

Once again Savitri splashed down into the water, and it took him only seconds to zoom back over to Fiera. She gathered him up into her hands again and got ready for another throw. Once again his wings were out, his body was ready, and Fiera was down to throw. She gave him a steady handed heave, and he flew out over the water again. “Savitri, fly!” This time his gliding was near perfect, but apparently he had something extra in mind this time, not merely satisfied with gliding. Fiera watched as he pulled his wings in, making a messy flap. She held her breath- he had undoubtedly seen birds doing it before at the riverside, but this was his first time actually trying to fly for himself. He flapped once, twice- and “stumbled” mid-air, not really getting the hang of it, tumbling into the water below. Well, it was a good try.

“Come on, you can do it.” Fiera said, already waiting with her hands outstretched at the pond’s edge. To his credit, Savitri didn’t seem discouraged yet. He raced back over, clambering into her waiting grasp and she lifted him up again. “Okay, fly!” She said, and launched him forward. This time he started flapping from the get-go and it was… admittedly pretty rough. He dipped wildly, pitching up and down as he attempted to combine what he knew about gliding with his desire to keep going up. He eventually figured out pulling his wings forward and “clapping” before pulling back again, but it was a bit too late and he had drifted too close to the pond’s surface by that point, causing him to skid to a stop in the water, sinking into the depths. Still, he seemed to be getting the hang of it- getting close to some manner of breakthrough.

Fiera didn’t even need to give him another command after he came back to her. They both knew how close he was getting, and while the command was helpful for him understanding when to do it, the how was still something they were working out. This time though, she didn’t throw him- she simply held out her hands. He glanced back at her, hesitant. “You know what to do.” She said. He would have to learn to take off on his own eventually, of course- she was just giving him a pushing-off spot. Sure enough, he bunched his tail up under himself, bracing his fins against her arms. She felt the pure muscle in his tail push off, launching him through the air like a spring, pushing her back a bit. He flapped his wings wildly, then with more precision, until finally- he was doing it! Fiera couldn’t help but whoop with laughter as Savitri made wide circles in the sky above her, their mutual goal complete.
