Fiera was still on Andante’s back a few minutes later, feeling the breeze in her hair as he walked through the field. She hummed happily- this was much better than being stuck in some cramped, closed off training area. Not to mention without boundaries, she could really afford to let loose with Andante. As if reading her mind, he gave his mane a solid flick, nickering happily. It looked like he agreed. They could really open up here… if he knew how to, that was. Andante didn’t really know how to speed up or slow down, now that she thought of it. Well. He did, but not how to do it on command. He had know way of knowing if she wanted him to go faster. Well, she’d just have to fix that. Fiera picked up the reins, gripping them tightly, before raising them up and flicking them as hard as she could.

Andante knew that that was the signal for ‘go’, but he was already moving. What did she want? “Andante, faster!” Fiera said, lobbing a carrot out in front of them. Andante rushed over to it, picking up the pace to do so. He snatched it off of the ground but Fiera flicked the reins again, urging him to keep going. “Good job! Good faster!” She called over the wind, and Andante kept moving again. He was moving at a faster pace now, though not one that she could consider ‘running’. Still, it was definitely faster than before. She just had to keep it up. “Ok Andante, even faster now!” She said, and gave the reins another flick, tossing another carrot even further ahead. Excited, he sprinted after it, running up to where it was and snatching it up off of the ground, not even breaking step for a moment. They were really whizzing now!

Fiera didn’t think she could throw carrots any faster than this, though. At least, not with Andante having to slow down again to grab them. She’d just have to hope he had the idea by now. To test it out, Fiera called out again, shouting over the wind. “Andante, faster!” She cried, and almost immediately regretting it as the equillion sped up. They were going at a full gallop now, plowing across the field. Fiera’s tail streamed behind her like a banner, and she tried to keep her breath steady despite how exhilarating this was. It was indeed fun, but now came the next trick- slowing down again. She took a deep breath and gave the reins a quick tug on both sides. It was a bit like when she pulled on them to make him stop, but instead of holding it it was just a brief tug. “Slower, Andante!” She called.

Andante was somewhat familiar with the tug on the reins, but definitely not with the sound she made. When he didn’t slow down, Fiera tugged a bit harder, jerking his head back slightly even though she felt bad about it. He grumbled but slowed down a bit, trotting again. “Whew.” Fiera said. “Good slower, Andante.” She said, and took the opportunity to throw him a carrot now that he was moving slow enough for her to do so. The equillion happily snatched it off the ground and kept going. After a few moments, Fiera gave the reins a brief tug again. “Andante, slower again.” She said, and dropped a carrot quite close to them. To grab it, Andante had to slow down even more. Fiera let herself relax a bit after that, as they were now down to a comfortable walking speed instead of the breakneck gallop he was doing before.

She kept repeating those actions for a while, flicking the reins and ordering him to speed up, and then giving them a slight tug so he’d slow down again. The longer she did it for, the smoother Andante was in his actions and the faster he’d react. Soon, she was convinced he had it down pat. After that, Fiera decided to ride him back to the kennels instead of walking. Might as well if you had the opportunity now, right? This would probably be Fiera’s last lesson with the equillion, but she didn’t mind. They had learned a lot together. Andante had learned some new skills and trust, and Fiera had managed to refresh herself on old ones. No matter what happened next, they were both moving on in a better condition then they started with. And even if they weren’t, well, it was still a pleasant ride back home.

The day was bright and sunny- a boon for what Fiera had planned. She had her bloodroot nyssa with her, a little sprout she had named Serkan. With spring in full force he was growing like a weed though, and she was hoping that she’d be able to train him up well for the upcoming plant battle tournament. She had lost the last tournament by just a hair, and was hoping that this time would be different. There were so many things she had to teach him, but hopefully he’d pick up on them fast… not that nyssa were known to be “fast”. Still, despite her high hopes, Fiera knew that they had to start with the basics. Every tree grew from a tiny seed, after all. She set the sapling down in a mossy grove, sunlight filtering down through the trees. It was quiet and pleasant, with a very slight breeze. Fiera 1 Serkan Lv 45.1/Lo 5.1 Name 1

Hopefully that would avoid giving Serkan any distractions. If he was to be a slow learner as she predicted, he’d need all the he could get. First things first, Fiera knew that he needed to learn his name. It would be the basis for any further tricks, as it would be difficult to get his attention without it. She had some treats to help him out too. Fiera has heard that nyssa enjoyed fruits as a supplement to their diet, and brought some berries with her. She had the feeling she’d have to upgrade to bigger fruits as Serkan grew, but these would do for now. They were ripe and juicy- hopefully perfect for the baby Nyssa. Fiera set the package of fruit on the ground next to her as she sat down in front of Serkan. It was time for his training to begin, whether he was ready or not. Fiera 2 Serkan 45.2/5.1 Name 2

“Okay…” Fiera said quietly to herself, hyping up before taking a deeper breath. “Serkan!” She called cheerily, but the bloodroot nyssa didn’t respond, and instead blinked lazily in a beam of sunlight. Fiera huffed, and took an even deeper breath. “Serkan!” She shouted, and the nyssa finally showed a reaction, lazily turning his head to Fiera. Pleased enough with that, Fiera praised him. “Good job, Serkan! Here, have a berry!” She said, and held out a small strawberry, holding it by the leaves. Serkan tilted his head slightly as he looked at it before leaning forward and eating it, leaves and all, nearly taking her finger off in the process. He didn’t even seem to care as most of the juice rolled down his chin. Well. Fiera certainly hoped he was clever enough to fight in a tournament, and that wasn’t exactly a good sign. She would keep trying though- he was just a baby sprout, after all.

When he was done eating, Fiera got ready to try again. She started chit chatting idly- about the weather, about what she did that week, whatever. Hopefully Serkan would respond to just his name, and not the other things she was saying. Sure enough, he didn’t seem to be responding to anything she said, and she was quietly optimistic. “And then I told her- what do you think of that, Serkan?” She threw in… and the nyssa still didn’t respond. Fiera put her face in her hands and groaned loudly. “Serkan…” She said, frustrated… and the nyssa finally turned to look at her. Fiera couldn’t tell if it was just a delayed response to the first time she said his name, or if he was responding to her exasperation… but she figured it would be best to reward the behavior regardless. She tossed him another strawberry. “Good job, Serkan.” She said.

The berry bounced off of his face, only for the nyssa sprout to move to catch it about two seconds later. When he finally realized it wasn’t there, he looked around for a moment before finding it on the ground, and ate it as slowly as anything else. Fiera sighed quietly and went back to talking, hoping that the third time was the charm. “-But banana yellow definitely isn’t my color, is it Serkan-” She said, throwing his name in. Fiera wasn’t expecting much, but to her surprise the nyssa looked up at her, mid chew. The humanish’s eyebrows practically flew off her head, and she scrambled to get another treat for him. “Good job, Serkan! Fantastic!” She said, ecstatic- it had taken him a bit, but it looked like her bitty nyssa wasn’t as slow as she thought. If she played her cards right, there was hope for him yet.

With Serkan now knowing his name, Fiera decided to go ahead and move on to some other trick. Probably a basic one, if her list was reading correctly. She sat there for a moment and mused on what to teach him next. Serkan had nearly taken her finger off during that last trick, and well… Fiera didn’t like that, to say the least. He would need to learn to treat Fiera’s gently, especially while he himself was still young and small. The humanish could theoretically manhandle him now if he tried to strike her, but certainly not when he was older. As a result, she needed to teach him some manners now. That meant that as much as Fiera would like to rush through the basics in order to teach her nyssa some battle moves, the next trick who’s box was going to be checked was ‘no’.

For that she’d need some berries, which she thankfully had in spades as of right now. Then, she’d either need good reflexes or something to cover the berries up with, considering that she was trying NOT to get bitten right now. Fiera dug around in the surrounding bushes, but couldn’t find anything appropriate to cover the berries up- or at least not anything that the nyssa couldn’t easily tear through, even as a baby. A couple of scraps of bark, a large leaf, but nothing useful. She sighed- at least she was generally faster than him? She’d just have to work with what she had, which was to say, not a lot. She turned to the nyssa and cracked her knuckles- she’d just have to power through it. “Ready, Serkan?” She said, and was met with a slow, lazy blink in response. Hopefully his reaction time would be just as slow.

Fiera popped open the fruit package, revealing the tasty morsels within. She dug around in it for a bit before she held up a strawberry so Serkan could see it. The nyssa seemed to perk up a bit as she set it down in front of him. “Serkan. No.” She said, pointing at it firmly and speaking with a serious tone of voice. The creature didn’t even seem to hear her, still looking at the strawberry. Slowly but surely, he leaned forward, opening his little jaws to take the strawberry. Far faster than the nyssa could move, Fiera snatched the berry away, holding it in her fist well above him. “No!” She reiterated loudly. Serkan looked around wide eyed, as if the strawberry had just teleported away from him. He sniffed loudly, but didn’t seem to figure out where it went, and soon returned to his placid demeanor.

When Serkan stopped looking- which didn’t take very long, to be honest- Fiera brought her hand back down again. “Ok Serkan, good no. Here you go, buddy.” She said, and dropped the strawberry right in front of him. For a minute he didn’t react, and then slowly looked down at it. He tilted his head… and ate it in one fell swoop. Easy enough, even if she had to wait a while. Then, Fiera got out another strawberry and set it in the same spot as before before pointing at it. “Serkan, no.” She said again, just as loud. Serkan paused for a minute, looking at it for much longer than before. For a moment, Fiera thought that he understood the command and was obeying… until he leaned down to grab it again. The humanish snatched it away, scolding him with a sharp “No!”. It would appear that he had just been thinking about it for longer.

Once again, Serkan seemed to zone out after the berry disappeared, and Fiera was forced to praise him and relent again, giving him the berry. He was just as happy to eat it, even if he wasn’t speedy about it. “Okay… let’s give this one more go.” Fiera said, getting out a third berry. She set it in front of him and pointed at it one more time. “Serkan, no.” She said. Then she waited… and waited… and waited. She got the feeling that she had passed the point of him just being slow to respond, and was now in the space of him actually obeying the command. To test it out, she leaned back on her heels. “Okay Serkan… good boy.” She said. With surprising speed (for him at least), Serkan reached out and grabbed it. Fiera leaned back even further- it looked like he understood! What a pleasant surprise.
