To Fiera it looked incredibly unassuming, but apparently it made nyssa go wild. She quietly hoped that she hadn’t been ripped off and sold a bottle of water, but she still began to uncork the top regardless. “Okay Isle... spore!” She commanded, finally popping the cork out. She waved the vial in front of the mangrove’s face, repeating the command. It took a second, but slowly but surely the crossbreed’s tiny eyes began fluttering open. There was a rustling through their leaves, but the air around Fiera was still, implying that they were making them move as opposed to relying on the wind. Then, she saw a yellow haze start to come from the branches, making its way over to Fiera. The humanism paused, then scrambled over to her bag, digging through it. Moments before the cloud reached her, she managed to throw on a pair of goggles as well.

After all, as anyone with allergies knew, clouds of spores could burn like the dickens. At least her eyes, mouth and nose were protected though, even if her hands were starting to feel a bit itchy. From there, Fiera opened the cooler she always brought with her when training carnivorous pets. Inside, there was a collection of large frozen fish that she had gotten from a meat market. Perfect. “Good job, Isle! Good spore!” She said, and tossed one in the halfbreed’s direction. With surprising (and honestly, terrifying for a fifty foot long beast) speed, surged upward to grab it. Fiera shivered- these crossbred monstrosities usually passively absorbed nutrients from the silt at the bottom of the bodies of water they lived in, but they apparently weren’t opposed to taking after their pliathor parents if need be. Fiera was just glad that she wasn’t on Isle’s bad side.

After that, Fiera got out the second bottle of pheromones and began wrestling with the cork. When it was nearly out, she looked back up at Isle, who was still sitting in the same position. “Ready Isle? And… spore!” She said, popping out the cork. Once again, she waved it around, letting the smell of the pheromones waft over to Isle (even though Fiera couldn’t smell anything herself). Isle seemed to get excited, and their leaves began shivering even quicker than before. An even larger cloud of spores began wafting off of the leaves now, and Fiera tightened the straps on her mask and goggles for safety’s sake. She got hit by her pets’ own attacks plenty of times before, and wasn’t looking forward to spending another week in and out of her doctor’s office. She really had to get better at taking care of herself, that was for sure.

When the air cleared, Fiera was quick to toss Isle another fish. “Good job, Isle! Good spore!” She said eagerly, and the mangrove accepted it graciously. Things seemed to be going well so far- Fiera was loving that quick response. Still, only time would tell if she could get Isle to do it on command. Once the mangrove swamp was done with its fish, Fiera cupped her hands around her mouth, hoping that was enough to get its attention. “Okay Mangrove- spore!” She shouted, hoping that the creature heard her. She heard a rumbling in response, as if the creature heard her… but no spores were forthcoming. Fiera sighed, and got out another bottle of pheromones. “Spore, Isle!” She said, uncorking it, and the crossbreed’s reaction was almost instantaneous this time. It appeared that they weren’t ready to do it without the pheromones that try, but the verbal order definitely helped in getting them set up.

She praised Isle and threw them another fish before getting ready to try the verbal command again. Hopefully they were comfortable enough with doing it by this point that it would actually… you know, work. She knew that Isle was a slow learner, but she didn’t want to be covered in nyssa pheromones all day. “Okay Isle- spore!” She called out one more time, hoping it would get through this time. She held her breath, and sighed with relief as the yellow green cloud began to shake out of the crossbreed’s rustling trees. Soon Fiera was surrounded in a cloud of spores that she was sure would burn her eyes if she wasn’t wearing goggles. It had taken some doing and there was an awfully long pause in between the command and the action, but she had finally gotten Isle to obey her. Now she just had to keep it up.

Fiera kept going like that, giving the command, waiting for Isle to send out the spores, and feeding them a treat, over and over again. Soon the pollen spreading reaction was just as instantaneous with the verbal command as it was with the pheromones. Fiera was relieved that Isle had finally gotten it down. They were a beautiful and powerful creature yes, but their intelligence left something to be desired. Now that they had at least one fighting move down though, Fiera knew that she could keep up the momentum and teach them more with a little effort. She just had to stay patient and stay firm to keep the beast’s attention. As the last of the spores finally settled out of the air, Fiera was already digging through her training bag for ideas on what to teach next. From here, the sky was the limit for the pair of them.

Fiera grabbed her backpack and the cooler of fish and began scrambling up the slope toward the lip of the crater. She didn’t have to worry about Isle going anywhere- this crater lake was completely isolated, not to mention the fact that mangrove halfbreeds were incredibly lazy. That bucket of leaves wasn’t going anywhere. So Fiera had some time to get into position… though she realized she should probably do it before the beast fell asleep. The slope was steeper than she was expecting- it was harder to get back up then it was to get down. She still managed it though, and soon she was overlooking the whole of this ‘pocket lake’ , and the streams that fed into it. More importantly, she now had a clear shot at Isle’s whole body no matter where they swam in the lake which was ideal for the next move she was going to teach.

Danger sense was an essential ability in any fighting beast’s repertoire. It involved being able to predict an opponent's next move and get out of the way or deflect it before it could strike down. Fiera had taught it to several of her pets already, albeit… never on a creature this size. Isle was absolutely huge, and ‘rapid movement’ wasn’t really in the cards for them. Could it even muster up the speed to try and dodge any incoming moves? Fiera wasn’t sure, but she still had to try. There were people relying on her to teach this, after all. And Isle would hardly be a good competitor in the upcoming plant tournament without it, especially not when most of its competitors already knew it. If they were to have any chance at all, Fiera would just have to figure this out. Fiera nodded to herself, her vigor for training renewed.

With that thought in mind, Fiera dropped her backpack in front of her, getting out the equipment she’d need for this. All of a sudden she remembered why her backpack was so heavy today- she had stuffed it full of rocks. And then, right at the top, there was a high powered slingshot. She wasn’t sure what was in it, but she had accidentally punched a hole straight through the drywall of her apartment when she tested it out at home. She put a picture frame in front of it. Her landlord would never know. The point was, she knew that this slingshot packed a punch. Most things she figured wouldn’t catch Isle’s attention, but something this high powered? Fiera would be concerned if she DIDN’T notice its projectiles. That being said, Fiera doubted that it would actually hurt her. Instead it was meant to be a more irritating effect.

Her aim would be more of an issue, Fiera thought. She tested the slingshot with a few nearby acorns and found that she could at least get projectiles onto Isle with some accuracy. From there, she tested it to make sure that she could actually hit Isle’s sides and neck- the spots that they were actually likely to notice. After all, sending a projectile through Isle’s branches would just slow it down so much that the halfbreed would never notice it by the time it hit flesh. After a few minutes Fiera was pretty sure that she could hit Isle with accuracy, and loaded up the first of the rocks. “Okay Isle… let’s see what you’ve got.” She pulled the rock back in the sling, lined up the shot, took a deep breath, and let it rip. The stone zipped away from the slingshot and out of Fiera’s sight.

She didn’t see it again until she spotted something bouncing off of Isle’s flank and into the water, causing a ripple in the otherwise still lake. It had hit, but other than a slight rustling of their trees, it didn’t appear that Isle noticed. Perhaps it did sting a bit, but apparently not enough to warrant a reaction. Fiera would have to change that. She loaded up another rock and let it fly, watching it for as far as her eyesight could pick up on it, watching it splash into the water below. That time Isle shifted a bit, turning to look at what hit them. Fiera didn’t hesitate, and loaded another stone into the slingshot, lining it up at the beast in the water. It didn’t look like Isle was hurt, just irritated- which was exactly what Fiera wanted. Without hesitation, Fiera let the next rock fly, right at the same spot as before.

It pinged against the same spot, and this time Isle DEFINITELY reacted, whipping around as quickly as they could and emitting an unnerving hissing noise. Fiera was glad- now that she didn’t LIKE being attacked, hopefully she would put some effort into avoiding being attacked. Fiera readied another rock in the slingshot, aiming a lot more carefully now that Isle was moving around. Sure enough, she managed to strike in the exact same spot. The mangrove thrashed around even more furiously, but seemed to notice Fiera up on the ridge finally, and started swimming away. Fiera smirked- it looked like Isle was starting to get the idea. She readied another stone- beginning to dodge was good, but it wasn’t exactly ‘danger sense’. They’d have to keep working on it. She pulled the slingshot taught, and let off another rock in the crossbreed’s direction, continuing to strike while the iron was hot.

When she let it off, the fist sized rock whizzed toward the creature as usual, but this time Isle rolled over to Fiera’s surprise, momentarily dipping under the water. Fiera couldn’t see where the rock landed due to the splashes sent up by Isle’s escape attempt, but she wouldn’t be surprised if that attack was dodged. Fiera nodded, satisfied. Isle had learned to dodge… but only from that one direction, and only after identifying where Fiera was. She had to get Isle to think on their non-existent feet a little bit better than this. That meant attacking the halfbreed from more angles, and trying to hide a little bit better. Isle had already swam away from the original spot that Fiera was attacking them from, but she was quickly settling in in a new spot part way around the rim of the crater lake and setting up the slingshot again.

Fiera took careful aim from the new position and after staring down at the target for a while, was pretty sure she had it on point. Once it was ready, Fiera went ahead and fired off a shot, pulling the elastic back and releasing the stone. It did hit Isle, but to Fiera’s approval the halfbreed immediately moved out of the way, instead of just randomly thrashing like before. It wasn’t as good as she wanted yet, but it was definitely progress. The humanish reloaded the slingshot- from the looks of it, she was going through her supply of stones quickly. Still, there should be enough left to finish training danger sense. Knowing that, she snatched up another rock and slung it across the crater, and to Fiera’s delight Isle managed to get out of the way before it hit. It looked like Isle’s reactions were getting better and quicker.

They just had to do it on the first try now. Knowing this, Fiera quickly picked up the back and ran around to another spot on the ridge, settling down into another hidden position. The humanish readjusted her slingshot’s aim and pointed it down at the halfbreed, who was still circling nervously in the center of the crater lake. She pulled back the sling and released- and Isle almost immediately moved. The halfbreed rolled to the side, and the stone plunged into the water to their side harmlessly. Fiera was stunned for a moment, but then whooped loudly, her voice echoing off of the crater walls. They had done it! Finally! Their reaction time was a little slow- Fiera was dozens of feet away, so it took forever for the stone to actually make contact- but it was exactly what she was trying to get them to do. With a bit of practice, it would be perfect.
