Fiera just had to give her an extra nudge to get it down pat. "Good come, Tenmei!" Fiera said, giving her back a brief stroke as she passed by. She wasn't sure if you were supposed to pet baby tat-lung, but Tenmei seemed to appreciate the affection. Once she was done with that, Fiera decided to give it one more try. Tenmei had hesitantly approached her last time, hopefully this attempt would go a lot better. She circled around to another side of the dock and crouched down, leaving her hand over the water to give Tenmei a spot to 'come' to. "Tenmei, come!" Fiera called. The tat-lung swam in another couple of tight circles as if processing the command, and then quickly swam over to Fiera. She circled under Fiera's hand for a moment, and Fiera could have cheered. "Good job, Tenmei! Good come!" She said happily. That was another trick down- they were making good progress.

With come out of the way, they had to move on to the next trick. If come was done... well, the opposite of that was stay. It was a simple enough trick, so Fiera figured that she might as well teach it. She checked her can of treats and found that she still had plenty left. So if she was good on treats... then how should she tackle this trick? Any other pet could be easily tied up or caged to get it to 'stay', but a fish wasn't quite as easy. Maybe... Fiera went through her bag. There it was. She had a small net on the end of a pole. Usually she used it for fishing, but in this case it would do an okay job at keep Tenmei still for a little bit without hurting her. Fiera set it down next to the bag for future use.

As before, Fiera got down near the water's edge, holding out a treat. "Tenmei, come here!" She said and the tat-lung swam over, happy as always to have a treat. Fiera dropped it in the water and she swam around it, snacking on it gently. Fiera took the opportunity to whip out the net, scooping it under the baby tat-lung. The bottom part of the net dipped into the water, keeping the carp-like fish in place but the top was well above the water. Fiera knew full well that Tenmei didn't know how to jump yet, and would probably sit in there, confused. Sure enough, she wiggled around a bit in the net, but couldn't go anywhere else. To free herself though, Fiera rested the pole of the net on the dock, and set her bag on top of it to keep it from tipping over and releasing her pet into the water.

"Okay Tenmei... stay!" Fiera said, and backed away from the net. She heard the tat-lung splash around a bit, no doubt looking for her owner, but Fiera resisted the urge to run over and comfort her. She gave it a few moments, tapping her foot on the far side of the dock. After about half a minute, Fiera returned to the net. Tenmei was there looking up at her sadly, as if wondering why she would be trapped like this. "It's alright honey, you're fine." Fiera chuckled, turning the net so she could swim out. "Good stay, Tenmei!" Fiera said, clarifying the situation with her praise. She tossed the baby tat-lung another treat, which seemed to clear up her mood quite quickly. Fiera rubbed her hands together, ready to give it another go. Tenmei was a little harder to catch this time though- it would appear that she was starting to wise up.

She managed to scoop the tat-lung into the net soon enough though, and managed to pin it down again despite Tenmei's furious thrashing. "Okay Tenmei- stay!" Fiera said again, pointing at the tat-lung. As she walked away though, she couldn't help but note the fact that she wasn't struggling nearly as much. She opted to take that as a good sign- that Tenmei was slowly getting the idea of 'staying'. When Fiera returned, she dumped Tenmei out again and threw her another treat. "Good job, Tenmei! Good stay!" The tat-lung accepted the treat graciously, and Fiera decided to give it one more go. This time though, she wouldn't use the net- it kind of defeated the point of Tenmei staying on her own. It did its job well, but it was time to move on. Fiera threw it back on the pile and turned back to Tenmei to give the command.

"Okay, Tenmei... stay!" Fiera said and backed away again. She listened closely, but couldn't hear any splashes. Did that mean that the tat-lung was obeying the command? Or that she had just dipped below the water and was trying to escape now that Fiera wasn't there to enforce the trick and keep an eye on her? She couldn't know for sure until she went back over though. Fiera gave it a few more agonizing seconds and walked back to the dock's edge, to find Tenmei... looking up at her. She sighed with relief, praised the tat-lung some more, and threw a couple of extra treats just to hammer in that she did it right. She was amazed that such a young creature could have that much patience, but she certainly wasn't complaining. It was just one more trick for the list, and one more thing that Fiera didn't have to worry about.

The last trick then (at least for the bare bones basics) was no. That was easy enough, Fiera supposed- all of her pets had been pretty conducive to being taught no. The only problems she usually had were when those pets had sharp teeth that they were quite willing to use, which left Fiera with more scraped knuckles than she particularly cared to admit. Tenmei was completely toothless though, so this wasn't a problem that Fiera was expecting to have with her. And yet, the tat-lung did have a bit of haughtiness to her, and so perhaps wouldn't back down easily. No snooty lady liked to be told 'no' after all. Still, Fiera wouldn't know until she tried with Tenmei, now would she? The tat-lung splashed around and looked up at her, as if she knew that something new was coming. And indeed it was, even though she couldn't predict what.

Fiera got out the can of treats and looked at them. They had done her perfectly well so far, and she wasn't going to run out any time soon. Tenmei seemed to like them a lot too, so they'd probably work for this. The humanish shook one out into her hand and held it at the surface of the water. "Okay Tenmei... no." Fiera said, setting the command and pointing at the treat in her hand. Just as she was expecting, the tat-lung baby tried squirming into her hand anyway, not understanding what the command meant and just thinking she was being given a treat for... being cute, Fiera supposed. Still, that wasn't what she was supposed to do. Fiera curled her fingers up, hiding the treat away and preventing the lapis tat-lung from having access to it. "No, Tenmei. That's wrong." She said, calmly but firmly to her pet.

The tat-lung kept trying anyway, no matter how many times Fiera said "no" (and she did say it quite a lot). She just kept nudging at Fiera's hand, hoping that poking one particular finger would cause it to spring open and drop the tasty goodie. Fiera held fast though and only cringed a little bit at the sensation of the toothless mouth nibbling at her hand. Finally, Tenmei seemed to wear herself out, falling back into the water and swimming away some. She was clearly fed up with these shenanigans, but unfortunately not in a literal sense. Her belly was as empty as ever. It was only then that Fiera opened her hand and started giving the lapis tat-lung praise. "Good girl, Tenmei! Good no!" She said sweetly. The tat-lung seemed unsure of Fiera's intentions, but swam up to her anyway, eyeing her carefully as she opened her mouth to accept the treat.

Tenmei snatched the treat away as quickly as possible once she realized that Fiera wasn't about to take it from her again, and Fiera let her swim off to eat it in private while she reloaded her hand with the next treat. She rested this one in the water like before, letting Tenmei swim over and take notice of it on her own. "No, Tenmei." She said firmly as she reached out. The tat-lung cringed back when she said that. It was clear that the trick was at least partially getting through to her, though Fiera kept having to say it to get the tat-lung to retreat, and it didn't work for long. After one particularly gutsy lunge, Fiera snapped her hand closed again and gave a sharp "No!". Tenmei backed off immediately to Fiera's relief, but she still kept her hand closed as a form of brief punishment for disobeying her.

After a little while, Fiera opened her fingers again, letting Tenmei take the treat once more. "Good no, Tenmei." She said again simply before getting another treat. Third time was the charm, hopefully. As the tat-lung swam over hesitantly, knowing that this treat wasn't 'free' by now, Fiera gave the command. "No, Tenmei." She said, pointing at the treat. To her delight, the young tat-lung stopped and stared instead of trying to sneak forward. Fiera didn't even have to curl her fingers- she stayed in place completely. Fiera gave it a couple dozen seconds but eventually decided to stop tormenting the poor creature. "Good job, Tenmei!" Fiera said, and the change in Tenmei's demeanor was instant as she surged forward to grab the treat. She didn't stop wanting it any less apparently, she just knew that bad things would happen if she tried to grab it before Fiera gave the go ahead. And that was exactly what lesson Fiera wanted her to come away with.

With no out of the way, Fiera wanted to teach her pet one more trick before heading out for the day. Well, it was technically a fighting move, but Fiera couldn't imagine it doing any damage with a critter this small. Still, she could imagine Tenmei doing some cool things on the showroom floor with it. So "jump" was the next move of the day, something nice and easy for Fiera to teach... hopefully. Tenmei had never left the water so far, and Fiera could imagine a fish not exactly wanting to try and beach themself. Still, she had hopes for the best. And a dartboard. She had brought a dartboard with her. It had everything you'd expect to see on it, including the bullseye right in the center, where she was hoping Tenmei would hit. A nice, big, red spot to aim herself at when she flew out of the water.

Fiera held the dartboard partially in the water, and let Tenmei swim around and investigate it. The tat-lung mouthed at it a couple times and brushed up against it, but ultimately there was nothing that the creature could do to affect it in any way. Once she was sure the tat-lung was comfortable around the object however, Fiera held a treat right in front of the center of the bullseye. "Tenmei, jump!" Fiera said, getting the baby tat-lung's attention. She looked at the target in front of her and reached her head above the water, but couldn't reach the treat. Even though the target was partially submerged, the bullseye itself was too far away. "Go on, jump!" Fiera said, trying to encourage her. The tat-lung swam back a bit and then surged through the water, sliding out of the water and up the 'ramp' provided by the dartboard and toward the treat.

She snatched it out of Fiera's hand effortlessly before falling back into the water. "Good job, Tenmei! Good jump!" Fiera said happily, even though that wasn't what she would really call a 'jump'. Still, it was the first step in the right direction. Now all Fiera had to do was keep upping the ante, raising the dartboard until Tenmei was at a good height for Fiera to consider the move 'done'. While Tenmei ate, Fiera got out another treat and adjusted the positioning of the dartboard. Instead of holding it at an angle in the water, she held it straight up and down, and instead of partially submerging it, she made sure only the very bottom of it was touching the water. Tenmei swam back over curiously, and once again Fiera held the treat in front of the bullseye. "Tenmei, jump!" Fiera said again, giving the order to Tenmei to start moving.

Tenmei was a bit faster to respond this time, as if she was starting to figure all this out. She made a few false starts, trying to just 'swim up' the side of the dartboard like last time. Fiera encouraged her by repeating the command, but she kept falling into the water. Finally though, Tenmei pushed up from below the surface, launching herself into the air just a few inches. She landed close to the bullseye but not directly on it before sliding off into the water. Still, that was a lot closer to what Fiera wanted. She lifted up the board for a moment and threw the treat into the water. "Good job, Tenmei! Good jump!" She said happily, rewarding the tat-lung for her efforts. Tenmei happily ate it, and Fiera had the feeling this would be a better way of rewarding her. After all, if she had to jump at someone in a fight, they weren't going to have a treat taped to their head.
