Fiera held the dartboard up even higher this time, hoping that Tenmei would repeat the action but try a little harder this time. She pointed briefly at the bullseye. "Tenmei, jump!" She said, hoping that the tat-lung would obey. It took a bit of buildup but sure enough, the young lapis tat-lung threw herself at the dartboard again, landing just short of the bullseye. "Great job, Tenmei!" Fiera said, and tossed her another eagerly accepted treat. She tried this a few more times with Tenmei, trying over and over again until she managed to hit the bullseye, and then raising the dartboard a bit more for the next round. To her credit, Tenmei performed admirably and soon she was managing to hit the dartboard even when it was three feet up- an impressive distance for such a tiny creature. After that, Fiera decided to give it a rest. Both she and Tenmei were getting tired- it was time for a break.

The amphadron splashed down into the water below her with little fanfare. Fiera had recently acquired Ophelia, a moss amphadron. The humanish had… admittedly never worked with one before. In fact, she had had to purchase a potion of regrowth from Alura in order to work with the creature at all, with how intelligent and headstrong amphadron were. Now they were both here at the docks, ready to begin a day of training… hopefully. Fiera wasn’t sure how well this was going to go, considering that she knew next to nothing about these creatures, other than the fact that they were very intelligent and very magical when they got older. Right now though, her pet just looked like some sort of wiggly larva instead of a graceful salamander. Still, she’d do her best to try and tame it. After all, it wasn’t like she had anything else going on today. Fiera 1 Ophelia 0.1/0.1 Name 1

What little information she had been able to gleam from the depths of her WATT about this species was that they ate small insects and plants out of their aquatic homes. That she could do, at the very least. In fact, she already had a jar of “bug bite” treats that Fiera used to help train her young tat-lung. She hadn’t worked with any of them in a bit though, so she was happy that they’d get good use today, even if she found them pretty gross to handle, personally. With any luck Ophelia would like them however, and they would be able to get started on teaching her her first trick; her name. A pet’s name was the default trick for most critters, and Fiera usually used it to judge how quick a learner a pet was and how stubborn they were to figure out how the rest of their training would go.

Fiera watched as Ophelia circled around in the puddle the humanish had deposited her in, seemingly not caring about her odd situation. Fiera nodded before grabbing the jar of bug bite treats, ready to get started. She clicked her tongue and took a deep breath “Okay… Ophelia!” She called, looking intently at her amphadron. The swimming critter showed no response, so Fiera sighed and tried again, saying it louder this time. “Ophelia! Over here!” She said. Finally, the amphadron turned to look at her, interested by the sudden loud noise. “Took you long enough…” Fiera said under her breath before launching into affectionate sounding praise. “Good girl, Ophelia! Here, have a treat!” She said, dropping one of the bug bites in the water while trying to not think about what it was made of. The young amphadron circled around it for a moment as if examining it carefully to see if it was edible.

Finally however, the moss amphadron circled closer and closer before pulling it off of the surface of the water in a single bite. Fiera praised her again, but for the most part sat quietly to let Ophelia relax again. When she was sure that she was no longer paying attention, Fiera piped up once more. “Ophelia!” She called, watching for any response. Needless to say she was highly pleased when Ophelia turned around to look at her again. She didn’t even need to say it more than once like last time! Fiera was quick to praise her and throw her another treat, which Ophelia also snapped up faster than before, her pincers moving in a blinding flash. After that, Fiera started talking, about nothing in particular. Ophelia watched her carefully, but she soon lost interest when she realized that Fiera wasn’t going to give her a treat for paying attention to these more random words.

That was Fiera’s goal, of course- to get Ophelia to pay attention to just her name (for now, at least) and not to any old thing Fiera was saying. She wasn’t going to be giving her treats by word count, after all. Still, she had one last test to give her amphadron to make sure she understood her name in totality. Halfway through a sentence, Fiera slipped Ophelia’s name in. “And then I went to the store, Ophelia, and-” And sure enough, the amphadron turned to look at her. Fiera smiled appreciatively and threw her a couple more treats, just because she had performed so well. Sure enough, Ophelia had understood her name in a fraction of the time that most of her other pets had. She might be a bit flat in demeanor (for now, at least) but it was clear that Ophelia was an easily taught clever beast.

The next trick was another relatively easy one- and one that was important if Fiera wanted Ophelia to listen to her in the future. Amphadron were intelligent, headstrong beasts, and Fiera knew that the younger she got in some discipline, the more obedient she would be when she got older. Fiera had seen many a case of a trainer letting an intelligent creature grow to adulthood only to be unpleasantly surprisedwhen those pets predictably didn’t respect their owners or feel any reason to obey them. The result was a completely untrainable creature, which Fiera wanted to avoid. Ophelia was very young though, so Fiera figured that by getting these training sessions out of the way now and spending a lot of time with her, she would be able to train her in the future once she grew up as well. For now though, they had to keep hustling with her training.

The next trick on Fiera’s list was “no”, a pretty simple trick all thigns considered. Still, it was important to teach to keep pets from getting out of control. A little bit of manners would go a long way. Ophelia seemed pretty polite right now… though perhaps it was just natural placidity. Still, Fiera was sure that she could convince her to act up a little bit in order to teach her ‘no’. The humanish put on a thick glove to avoid the worst of the young amphadron’s bites- which she was sure packed a punch, based on those long pincers. Then she rolled one of those bug bite treats into the palm of her hand and dipped it into the water. “Ophelia!” She called sweetly. The amphadron swam through the puddle curiously, looking at Fiera’s extended hand carefully. She was wearing something new and usually didn’t get into the water this much.

It was a bit of a new experience for Ophelia, but her surprise was soon interrupted by the sight of the treat in Fiera’s palm. Once she saw it, Fiera carefully pointed at the treat, letting the amphadron see her pointing finger and hear the command. “Ophelia, NO.” She said firmly, gesturing to the treat. The young amphibian drifted back and forth for a moment, mulling it over, before zipping through the water toward it, Fiera’s command going unheeded. The humanish snapped her fingers shut around the treat and sighed. She wasn’t expecting her to obey on the first try, but she would have appreciated a little bit more hesitation. The amphadron butted her head against Fiera’s hand a couple of times to try and get at the treat, but Fiera wasn’t about to give up that easily. Slowly but surely, Ophelia seemed to start losing interest.

Her insistence on getting into Fiera’s clenched fist degraded into lazy circles around Fiera’s closed hand before she finally stopped moving. When Ophelia stopped paying attention to the treat, that was when Fiera finally released her grip on it. “Good girl, Ophelia! Good no!” She said, careful to give her pet plenty of praise. The amphadron wiggled closer and closer, still a bit distrusting after that, before finally snatching the treat from the humanish’s hand. With one repetition done, Fiera immediately “reloaded” the treat, putting another one in the palm of her hand before lowering it into the water. Again, she pointed at it. “Ophelia, no.” She said as the young amphadron drew closer. Fiera approved as she seemed to recoil some, backing away… only to launch forward at her hand again. Fiera only just barely managed to close her hand around the treat, and she felt the pincers dig into her glove.

“Ophelia, NO!” She nearly shouted, pulling her hand out of the water while Ophelia splashed back down into it. She sighed and waited until the amphadron calmed down and backed off again, surprised at how that didn’t work. When she was still once more, Fiera dropped the treat down to her. “Ok Ophelia, good no. You did better, but let’s try it one more time.” She said, gettting out one last treat. Once again, she held it in the palm of her hand and offered it to the amphadron. She swam a bit closer until Fiera pointed at it and repeated the command. “Ophelia, no.” She said firmly, and the amphibian recoiled again. To Fiera’s relief however, she did not lunge forward again after a few moments like last time. Instead she sat patiently until Fiera finally handed over the treat, tacking another bit of praise on with it. That was one less thing she had to worry about.

Perhaps the docks wasn’t the best place to train Ophelia anymore considering how big she had gotten, but Fiera couldn’t seem to let it go. After all, the amphadron seemed most comfortable there… though perhaps the correct word to use was “least irritated”. Since she grew up, Ophelia had developed a flat, disaffected attitude that barely brushed on grumpy on occasion. Fiera knew that growing up was tough, but she had never expected a slimy amphibian to develop a grumpy teenager personality. Ophelia still seemed cooperative enough though, even if she considered most of what Fiera was asking her to do beneath her. With any luck she would be willing to put up with the humanish long enough to learn the tricks and moves that she had in mind. FIera had quite a list by now after all, and they’d have to go through all of them if she was to have a prayer in the tournament.

After all, Fiera knew what Ophelia would be going up against, and it was some stiff competition so far. If they were to have any hope of winning, they would have to hurry up. With that in mind, Fiera wanted to go ahead and teach Ophelia one of the basics of any fighting pet’s repetoire- danger sense. The ability involved, as far as Fiera understood so far, to be able to predict an opponent’s first attack and get out of the way before it hit. This would likely be an issue for Ophelia. Amphadron weren’t known for their speed… at all. In fact, they were one of the slowest species out there, opting for mind over matter. Well, Ophelia had certainly proved herself a smart SOMETHING, but that wouldn’t help in the field of battle. So Fiera would have to teach her to be a bit more nimble than she was.

With that in mind, Fiera had just the thing. She and Ophelia were currently at an offshoot of the lake, a shallow lagoon surrounded by trees and rocky outcroppings. Ophelia was wandering around in the shallow water, which came up to the moss amphadron’s ankles at this point in the tide. She sniffed around, but it appeared to be out of boredom more than curiosity. Thankfully, Fiera knew exactly how to snap her out of it as she quietly retreated behind a rock. She had two items that would help in teaching danger sense- a slingshot and a small cooler. The slingshot had just enough zip in it that aiming it at a pet would sting but not bruise. As a result, shooting at them was highly unpleasant but not harmful or dangerous. Ophelia wouldn’t like it, but ultimately the amphadron would be just fine. Hopefully she would learn to dodge the projectiles instead of letting them hit her.

And what projectiles they were! The cooler was filled with not little stones or acorns like Fiera usually used to teach this. Oh no. The cooler was filled with plenty of fresh ice cubes in a perfect size to launch at Ophelia. Amphadron were amphibians after all, and their porous skin was highly sensitive to cold and other extremes of temperature. As a result, Fiera figured that ice cubes (while ultimately harmless) would be EXTRA uncomfortable on Ophelia’s skin. By this point, the amphadron was glancing around as if wondering if that screechy cat woman had FINALLY left her alone. Unfortunately she had not and was instead glaring smugly at the moss amphadron from behind a rock. Now that she was successfully hidden from her pet, Fiera knew it was time to begin her training. She unzipped the cooler as quietly as she could, trying to keep the sound hidden from Ophelia’s perception.
