Pink? Did that have a significant meaning? She squinted as she focused on the various objects in the room. Were any of them pink? Her gaze settled on the various pretty images that were projected onto the far stone wall in the room. The images were washed out and blurry, making it too difficult to discern what they were meant to depict. Pachinko perched on her shoulder now quite calmly. Fanged tilted her head and squinted again to try and fix the images from the blurry mess they were projected in. Unfortunately, she came up short. Without any resolution, the mystery would blossom for longer. She wandered around the rest of the room, placing her palms against various stone tiles within the walls trying to make something happen. To her surprise, one of the tiles changed colour under the press of her palm. Pachinko let out an excited screech as the tile turned red.

Fanged also let out a sound of delight as she pressed the tile again. This time, it turned a deep shade of ocean blue. Hitting her palm against the tile once more turned it into the desired shade of pink. Fanged beamed down at Pachinko who gave an excited squawk in response. With one of the tiles successfully found, the woman turned to look for more. Since nothing had happened when she turned this one to the right colour, there were certainly more to be found. She twisted this way and that, pressing against the various stone tiles until she found the ones that could change colour. When she had turned all of the possible tiles pink, the walls rewarded her by shaking and retreating into the ground. The room was left open, though the area was obscured with a thick, dreamy mist. She couldn’t tell if the mist was hiding something or simply obscuring nothing at all.

With the room now rather open, Fanged felt herself relax. There was no pressing walls to trigger any remnants of claustrophobia. Pachinko took off into the air, glad to have some extra room to stretch his wings. He might have been trained to accept enclosed spaces, but that wasn’t his natural habitat at all. Fanged felt bad for people who kept their birds locked in cages for their whole lives. If you trained them properly, they wouldn’t fly away off into the abyss.
“Well at least if we get separated, I know you’ll always come back to me!” she called up to him.
If Pachinko could, he would have likely smirked in response to her words. She felt a bit envious of Pachinko being able to fly. It would be possible for her to fly as well if she got a creature big enough to carry her in the air.

With Pachinko still flying, Fanged decided to search the room for anything else that might be of interest. After a bit of searching, she pocketed a gold coin that had a strange engraving on it. She could take a closer look at it back on her ranch. Pachinko flew high above her head now. His dark blue feathers almost sparkled in the starlight. She watched him contentedly for a moment.
“Alright boy, are you ready to head to the next room?” she asked him.
Pachinko looked down at her with a mischievous glint in his eye before landing back on her outstretched arm. Fanged lightly stroked the top of his head with her fingertips. The Izer settled in comfortably and waited as she went to find the door. The door was thankfully unlocked when she tried it and she stepped through elegantly once it had swung open. Pachinko watched eagerly as she walked forward.

The new room was dark and dreary. It was filled with a heavier fog, further obscuring her vision. Pachinko huddled closer to her, unnerved by the sudden darkness. Fanged stroked his feathers again as she tried to calm him down. It took a bit, but eventually Pachinko was more relaxed within the room.
“Alright, time to explore!” Fanged said with enthusiasm.
The room still had that feeling of openness. The ceiling stretched up high into the sky, disappearing behind a thick layer of storm clouds. The only thing that lit the room was the occasional flickering of lightning. Fanged expected the accompaniment of thunder or rain, but neither appeared. She reached up her hand, testing to see if she could touch the lightning. Each bolt avoided her fingers completely. Perhaps it was simply an illusion or enchanted not to hit anything. The sight was something to behold at the very least.

The rest of the room was filled to the brim with old papers and books. The air had a distinct tinge of parchment to it that made Fanged feel a bit nostalgic. It reminded her of late nights working on old case files. Pachinko hopped down from her shoulder, fluttering his wings just enough to reach the ground without incident. He made a beeline for a stack of old scrolls that were each wrapped with bright red ribbons. The sight was intriguing enough to him for Pachinko to reach forward and grip the ends of the closest ribbons in his mouth. He tugged until it finally yanked free from the parchment. The Izer then flew up into the air, clutching his prize proudly as he flew. Fanged shook her head in amusement as she watched him and then leaned over to grab the scroll that now lay open against the ground.

Curiosity sparked through her body as she grabbed the scroll and eagerly began to read it. She scanned quickly, having enough experience to read large amounts of text quickly enough to glean what they were about. This one was an old legend, depicting the tale of a monster that used to terrorize a small village. Fanged had never heard of the village before, Arentha, nor had she heard this particular tale before. For all she knew, this story could be completely fictional. She decided to read it in closer detail. A quick glance up at Pachinko confirmed that the Izer was still distracted with the red ribbon. Fanged felt a rush of affection for the creature. She finished up reading the scroll and placed it back where she had found it. She had no need to take it with her. She didn’t think she’d be able to retrieve the ribbon though.

That ribbon would definitely be coming with them. Once Pachinko had grown tired of flying around the room, he settled back onto the ground, watching Fanged move about with an owlish gaze. Fanged smiled at him and went about searching the other scrolls. She tugged off more ribbons, but Pachinko only had eyes for the red ribbon that was now clutched within his talons.
“Let’s see, this one is labeled: Do Not Read. I think I will in fact read it,” she commented.
Pachinko might not care much for the bits of parchment, but Fanged felt inclined to talk her thought aloud anyway. To her complete and utter disappointment, the scroll marked: Do Not Read, was extremely mundane. She discarded it with disgust before thinking twice and picking it back up again. Had she missed something? She scanned the words again, frowned and held the paper upside down. When nothing happened, she dropped it again.

When Pachinko took off into flight again, an idea struck Fanged. Could she teach him to fly on command? It might be unconventional to teach such a trick indoors, but the ceilings seemed endless and rather similar to regular sky. She shrugged her backpack off of her shoulders and pulled out a treat capsule. Well, if she was going to train him, he’d need some incentive. Pachinko landed close to her, eager to see if he could sneak a treat off of her. She wouldn’t reward her until he managed to fly. She shook a treat free from the capsule and held it out of reach from Pachinko. The Izer tried to reach the treat by craning his neck upwards. When the treat remained in Fanged’s hands, Pachinko took more drastic measures. He began to lazily flutter his wings, using the extra momentum to propel him clumsily into the air.

Fanged knew that Pachinko already had a natural inclination to fly. He might not have been able to do it properly on command, but she had certainly seen him fly in the first place! This feeble attempt to get the treat just didn’t capture that same elegance that she had already seen from him in the air. She raised the treat a little higher so that he would be forced to try properly. This time, Pachinko flapped his wings with purpose until his body had raised enough for him to reach the treat. Fanged allowed him to pluck the treat from her fingers once he had put in the effort. He ate quickly, devouring his prize with smug satisfaction. When he was finished, he saw that Fanged wasn’t about to give him another one and hopped off to do his own thing. Fanged watched him carefully, waiting for him to fly without prompting.

It didn’t take him too long. Pachinko’s attention had been drawn to a shiny object located on a rather unsteady looking wooden shelf. In order to reach the object, her flapped his wings and flew upward. Fanged was quick to pull out another fruit treat and give it to him. Pachinko didn’t really know why she was giving it to him, but he accepted it happily. He clutched the treat in his talons for a moment before shoving it into his beak. Once he had finished, he tried to replicate the action that Fanged had rewarded him for. But first, he had to figure out what that was exactly. It took him a few awkward attempts before he managed to figure it out. His first attempt was to try and pick up the shiny object. (Fanged still couldn’t see what it was exactly.) When that didn’t work, he tried to scratch the shelf.

When that also didn’t work, Pachinko flew down from the shelf in attempt to pester Fanged directly. Right after he had landed, Fanged rewarded him by giving him another treat. Pachinko snatched it up quickly, beginning to understand which action was being rewarded. He ate quickly and then was quick to jump into action in order to receive another treat. He tested out his theory, fluttering into the air and flying around quickly before landing close to the woman once again. Immediately, she followed it up with another treat. Pachinko called out happily as he grabbed the treat. He was very pleased to have figured out what Fanged wanted him to do. Now that he had some of the basics of the command down, she felt comfortable assigning a command word to the action. She grabbed another treat, using it to entice the Izer into taking off into the air once more.

The introduction of the command word was quickly followed up with another treat. Pachinko grabbed it while he was still in the air. He then landed on the wooden shelf in order to properly enjoy his prize. When he had finished eating, he watched Fanged carefully as he awaited her next command. This time, Fanged gave the new command word first before she pulled out the treat.
“Pachinko, fly!” she told him firmly.
The Izer didn’t need any additional prompting after she had taken out another treat. He flapped his wings gracefully and flew into the air with ease. He flew around in circles until Fanged reached out with the treat and gave it to him. Pachinko snatched the treat with ease and ate it mid-air this time. Fanged laughed at the sight.
“Excellent work, boy!” she called up to him.
It helped that he was a natural flier. It certainly made learning easier.
