“Hey there! Anything new?” They heard from behind them, as a figure with an apron speedily in their direction while holding some sort of tray. Riku sat up and turned around, learning on one hand. Kioume turned his head with him to see what the fuss was about. “Translate.” He ordered. Riku laughed, using his other hand to caress the poor vocally limited beast. “Nothing yet. Right now we’re trying to use our ears to hear for footsteps.” The boy said, while holding the words in his mind to simultaneously send them to the spirit. “Sounds good.” The woman said as she reached them. Riku held her words as an echo in his mind so that the spirit could hear them, too. “I brought you both something to eat...although I’m not sure what your pet eats.” “Oh, thank you so much!” Riku said, rubbing his belly. He was definitely getting hungry, but he didn’t want to bother.

“Oh, and Kioume here doesn’t actually eat.” He laughed a bit, still translating everything through the ribbon. The woman raised her eyebrow. “I don’t understand. Surely your pet eats something. Maybe I have it.” She sat next to them and set the tray in between. Riku held up the amulet dangling from his chest. “See this? It’s a magical necklace that summons a natural essence into physical form. Kioume is the spirit of shine.” He reached up and rubbed the top of the creature’s head. “And he’s not my pet. He’s my friend. He’s very intelligent, and we communicate through a ribbon of telepathy.” The woman was shocked and impressed. “Wow, well my apologies, then. It’s not every day you meet a sort of deity like that!” She jokingly bowed half way. “Does this mean he’s heard everything I’ve said?” “Only when I translate for him.” Riku replied. “He doesn’t know common yet, so he can’t just hear people directly.”

At that, a rustling was heard near the smaller house in front of them. Their attention fixed to the door, but nothing was there. “Look, it’s right there!” Kioume shouted into the ribbon, using his tail to point to where they had found the can of paint. “Shh...” Riku quickly gestured to the woman, pointing to the left window where the creature was. She giddily and silently ‘slapped’ her thighs repeated in excitement. Apparently she had come at the perfect time. The game was on! “Oh, this is so exciting!” She whispered as low as possible. She just couldn’t keep it to herself. “What is it?” Kioume asked. Riku peered a little closer. He could see a rough textured flesh, a tail, and...wings? It wasn’t too large. Maybe three feet tall, and standing upright. “It looks like....but what would that be doing out here?” He said both in the ribbon and out loud.

“I think it’s a Runic Gargoyle.” He whispered to them both. “Why would it be out of its cave...? All the way out here?” The woman let out a loud gasp, which triggered the gargoyle into spinning around with a growl. Seeing them three of them, it started charging in their direction. The woman stood up and Riku did, too. What should he do!? “Oh no, should we protect her!?” Kioume asked in worry. “I don’t know how!” Riku stressed. “I’m just as useful as you at this point.” The creature was still running towards them, and the woman didn’t seem to move out of its path. Was she scared? Should he jump in front of her? It was getting closer! “Watch out!” He cried out loud, finally, as the creature reached them without stopping. It looked like it was about to tackle her. And it did! Falling to the floor she let out a scream!

......and a laugh? The monster started to kiss her face as she busted out in amusement and comfort. “Oh Meezu, I’ve missed you so much!” She said. “Mee...zu?” Kioume asked, looking at Riku who was also looking at him with confusion. They watched the woman sit back up again and seat the gargoyle on her lap. (How was her leg that strong? Wasn’t it...heavy?) “Oh, guys, it must have been Meezu breaking into the shack all this time to paint for us.” She said, gesturing to the beast. “He’s also sentient, like your Kioume, so I understand when you said he’s not a pet.” The creature almost seemed to purr as it sat and cuddled with the woman, who rocked him in her arms. “My husband and I used to paint the caves of the old mines, and one day we met this little guy. He was so amazed with our work that he wanted to join us.”

She continued: “But when my husband has his accident last year, we stopped making the trip out there. That’s why we built this little raggedy shack.” Kioume shifted on Riku’s arm, flexing his wings a bit for balance as he inspected the gargoyle. It was nice to see another non-humanoid sentient, finally. The gargoyle sort of ‘cawed’ as a way to communicate with his friend. “Aw, I know, I know...” she said to him. Then back to Riku she explained. “We wanted “Meezu to stay with us, of course! But...his home is the mine. And he wasn’t ours to take. So we said goodbye.” With a sigh, she looked into the creatures eyes and smiled. “It’s been a year now, and David is better. I think we can manage a trip at least once a month to keep this guy in our circle.” Looking back at Riku, she said “And that means he probably won’t come out to find us anymore.” with a wink.
