[Helios - No Bites ("Leave It") - 7]
The grubbles were all hiding at the edges of the pen again, so Nerius released a few more, emptying the last of them out of the crate. Helios was instantly interested, though not as eager as he had been, possibly as he hadn't actually been allowed to pounce on any of them before. Still, as one of them scuttled a little too close, and he got ready to pounce. "Leave it," Nerius warned the drake, and this time he actually listened, though stared grumpily at Nerius. Attitude aside, it was what he wanted, so Nerius praised him and gave him a treat.
It wasn't long before yet another grubble scurried by, there was quite a few of them loose in the pen now, and there was nowhere for them to go. Helios looked at it, but didn't even have the opportunity to try to pounce before being told, "Leave it." He listened, and made no move to attack the grubble, though continued to watch it.

[Helios - No Bites ("Leave It") - 8]
The grubbles continued to scurry past every so often, they weren't the smartest creatures. Helios watched them every time they came close, but when told "Leave it," left the chubby rodents alone. After a while, he seemed to give up on actually attacking any, and flopped down into the grass.
Nerius could have called it done there, but he decided to wait a bit longer, letting the young drake stay in the pen with the grubbles. He made no further move to attack them, even without being warned off again. That was what Nerius was looking for, he wanted Helios to leave something alone fully when told, not just to wait a few seconds after the command, and try again. Eventually though, he was satisfied with Helios' obedience, and decided to call it done. That was all he had planned for Helios today, and retrieved the leash, to lead the drake back to the kennel.
...Except, what was he going to do with all those loose grubbles?
-- Nerius and Helios leave, TROD is summoned to recapture all the grubbles --

Schism[X] Danger Sense Nerius was back at the park with a sarane once more, this time though, with Schism. The tournament had recently ended, and he'd done.. mediocre. He'd won only slightly more than he'd lost, and while his overall win percentage had gone up, Nerius couldn't say he'd truly done well. All the tier threes hadn't helped matters, though he'd somehow managed to pull a win against an unbroken one. That was more an issue of overall physical prowess than technique, and he'd have to work on that too, but for now he did have a few strategy related things he wanted to train.
They were working on the latter today, which was why the two of them were at the park. Some people had a consistent 'spot', but Nerius just used wherever had what he needed for the session. Today, he wanted a mostly open area, with enough bushes nearby that he could hide in them for the later part of the training, and Schism was already getting bored of the walk.

It didn't take too long to find a suitable area, and Schism, even bored, was much easier to deal with than a creature that fought him the whole way. Nerius had been considering the training on the walk there, and he wasn't entirely sure how it was going to work. It was something he innately had the ability to do himself, to have a sort of forewarning to danger or attacks. But that crawling, tingling sensation of danger stemmed in some way from the same source as his ability to sense magic.
Sarane were not magical creatures, and he had no idea how Schism was going to be able to sense danger. The movement of air currents perhaps? Nerius eyed his drake, who was poking half-heartedly at an old log, and his large colorful wings. He had to be able to track air movement somehow to fly properly, so it was possible he could use that to detect an incoming projectile.

[Schism - Danger Sense - 1]
That was his hope, at least, or, if not, the drake had some way of learning to pick up on incoming projectiles. Even if he was just able to spot them, and had the reflexes to dodge out of the way, as long as he could evade the attack, Nerius didn't really care how he did it.
The training itself was rather straightforward at least, from what he'd read. A popular technique was to launch things at your pet until they learn to get out of the way. Nerius had chosen a slingshot with small stones for this purpose, the drake's hide was sturdy enough that it would sting, but not do any real harm. Schism was sure to hate it though, Nerius considered taking a potshot at him as the drake was currently more interested in the old log than him, but decided it would be better to explain it first. He tended to whine about training enough as it was.

[Schism - Danger Sense - 2]
<Schism,> he sought to draw the drake's attention, and he looked over, boredly, at Nerius, <We're going to work on a new technique for the Pit today.> That got his interest a little more, Schism, like most drakes, found that sort of bloodshed appealing.
<An attack?> he asked, that bloodthirstiness showing in his 'tone'. He'd be disappointed though, as it was a defensive move.
<No,> Nerius shook his head, though the sarane probably didn't understand that gesture, <To avoid your enemies' attacks.> He looked a little less excited at that, but didn't refuse, perhaps remembering the hits he'd received in the recent tourniquet. <I'll be launching things at you,> Nerius didn't mention they were rocks, <And you'll need to dodge them.>
<You'll what?> even without the mention of rocks, Schism was suddenly less excited.
<Don't worry, it's nothing dangerous,> Nerius reassured him, before firing a rock from the slingshot at the drake.

[Schism - Danger Sense - 3]
The rock sailed clean past, missing the drake entirely!
But not because of anything Schism actually did, the drake hadn't moved an inch, Nerius just didn't know how to aim properly.
Schism looked were the rock had landed, then to Nerius, pausing for a moment before asking <...Do I get a treat for that?>
Nerius groaned, before answering <No, Schism.> He couldn't tell if the drake was being serious or sassing him, but either way, the miss hadn't been due to his actions. The sarane hadn't done anything wrong, but he realized he really should have taken his lack of experience with ranged weapons into account for this.
Well, they were here now already, and he didn't want to waste the trip, so Nerius loaded another rock into the slingshot, and took aim at the sarane again. And missed again, the stone zipping over Schism's wings without hitting anything, Schism just stared at him, and Nerius felt a little silly.

[Schism - Danger Sense - 4]
It took several more shots, and several more misses, before Nerius started to get the hang of it. He fired the slingshot again, and this time the rock bounced off of Schism's nose.
<Ow!> the drake exclaimed through the ribbon, growling slightly out loud. He'd gotten so used to Nerius missing that he had quit paying attention, and it had come around to bite him.
<I told you that you were supposed to move,> Nerius reminded him, loading another pebble.
<You didn't hit before,> Schism complained, rubbing at his nose with his front talon. He was still distracted, and when Nerius fired the pebble, it bounced off his chest.
<OW!> Again he complained through the ribbon, but he sounded more annoyed than hurt, which was good, because Nerius' aim with the slingshot wasn't good enough to deliberately miss more vulnerable parts of the drake's body. He wouldn't have aimed at the muzzle, that was just mean.

[Schism - Danger Sense - 5]
He had at least gotten enough practice that he could consistently hit the drake, he just couldn't much control where he hit the drake. He loaded another pebble, at shot it at the drake. Schism had gotten over his indignation enough to at least somewhat pay attention, and he tried to move out of the way this time. The pebble bounced off his flank, though given Nerius' aim it was impossible to tell exactly how much of a difference it had made.
It was something at least, but not worth getting a treat, since Nerius had told Schism ahead of time what he was supposed to do. He didn't have to try to encourage the behavior first, the sarane just had to get it right. They were a long way away from that, and Nerius fired another pebble at Schism. He moved, but it still hit, striking a wing this time.

[Schism - Danger Sense - 6]
Schism growled, rustling his wings, particularly disliking being hit in that location. It was reasonable, a grounded drake was a drake at a disadvantage, and the wings weren't terribly sturdy. <That was better,> Nerius was trying to be at least somewhat encouraging, even if the drake's reactions weren't up to what he was wanting. Schism wasn't cheered much, still to busy being grumpy about his wings.
But if training stopped every time Schism complained, they'd never get anything done, so Nerius took aim with the slingshot again. Unfortunately, Schism was again too distracted being disgruntled, and the rock hit him squarely in the chest. Even if it were possible to avoid upsetting the drake, Nerius wouldn't want to, he couldn't afford to get distracted being offended when he was actually in the pit. <Move this time please,> he reminded the sarane, before firing another stone at him. With this prompting, Schism did move, and the rock sailed clean past him.

[Schism - Danger Sense - 7]
That was what he wanted, technically, but Nerius felt like it didn't count if he warned the sarane before shooting the slingshot at him. The point was to sense danger, not dodge on command. At least he'd moved though, <See? Wasn't that better than being hit with a rock?> a lot of things were better than being hit by a rock, admittedly. He gave the drake a treat anyway, just to encourage him to continue trying to avoid the shots in the future.
Nerius took 'aim' again, and fired another pebble at Schism. The drake hadn't been forewarned this time, but had at least been paying attention, so while he did move in response to the rock, was still struck on the tail. He complained, of course, but that was an occupational hazard of doing anything with Schism. Nerius just ignored him, and picked up another stone, firing it at the drake as he had before.

And again, Schism did move, but the stone still clipped his foreleg. It was better, maybe, but still not a success, and Nerius fired again. This time, the drake's dodge was actually successful, and the stone just missed his wing. Nerius was.. fairly sure it was the drake getting better at this, and not just his questionable aim. <That was good!> he told Schism, who immediately puffed up with pride. Drakes. Even so, he gave the sarane a treat, pleased to finally have some progress after all this time.
Not that it was entirely Schism's failing, he should have learned how to use the slingshot before trying to use it as a training technique. At least he had it for next time, because Schism was not his only drake. He was the focus for today though, and once he was done eating, Nerius loaded the slingshot and fired another pebble at the purple sarane.

[Schism - Danger Sense - 9]
He was a little distracted with by food, Nerius had been aware of that, and wanted him to be able to dodge even with a distraction. Schism was still sort of paying attention, and did manage to move, but not enough that the stone didn't clip his wing. The drake growled, rustling his wings before attempting to flatten them to his body as much as possible. He really didn't like the wing shots, and Nerius would have considered targeting them for more 'encouragement'... except he couldn't aim that well.
He loaded and fired the slingshot again, Schism was still riled up, but this time he was paying enough attention to notice the stone coming, and managed to dodge out of the way. <Good job!> Nerius praised him, though the drake didn't puff up as much this time, still huffy about the wing hit. Nerius gave him a treat as well, and that might have helped a little.

Nerius readied another stone as Schism ate, and once he was done, fired it at the drake. The food had gained the sarane's attention, but he was wary this time, not wanting to suffer another wing hit like he had last time he had been distracted by food. It paid off, and he managed to avoid the flying rock, if only barely.
But a miss was a miss, and Nerius praised him just the same, tossing him another treat. He readied another stone, and once Schism was finished with his food, fired the slingshot at the drake. Schism was paying more attention now, and managed to dodge out of the way again, the rock fully missing him and bouncing harmlessly across the ground. Schism seemed to be getting better at dodging, and Nerius kept it up, firing the pebbles at the sarane, until he was consistently managing to evade the projectiles.

[Schism - Danger Sense - 11]
They weren't done, Schism was effectively dodging the projectiles when he could see Nerius shooting them at him, but attacks in the Pit weren't always as predictable. Schism himself was example of that, the drake could turn invisible. And now that he was managing to evade visible 'attacks', it was time to move on to the next step.
Nerius had considered hiding in the bushes for this, but, well, he wasn't that sneaky, and doubted he'd be able to effectively hide from the drake. He'd gotten another idea, but he'd explain it to the sarane first.
Noting the pause in training, Schism asked, <Are we done?>
<No,> Nerius answered, not managing to sound apologetic, <I want you to be able to dodge without seeing the attack coming.> The drake seemed unsure of what this would mean, so he continued, taking out a long, narrow strip of cloth. <I'll be tying this around your eyes, and you'll need to keep dodging.>
