Casper was perfectly content to be left to his own devices. She wasn’t quite sure what he was up to and she didn’t think that she needed to examine his whims in any depth. For now, Fanged would focus her attention on the river. The water was rougher than one might expect. A current pulled along the surface, dragging an assortment of plant life along its curved path. Near the edge of the water, mushrooms sprouted out of the ground as they reached for moisture. Fanged was a bit wary of the fungi. She wasn’t sure if they were poisonous or not. In such a strange place, it was possible that even their spores could cause damage. She decided to avoid them for now.
“Alright Casper, let me know if you find anything you want me to investigate with my opposable thumbs,” she told him.
Now to hope Casper actually followed that suggestion.

She decided to focus on her own tasks for the moment. She moved closer to the water, staring intently at the surface as she tried to spot any easy to access gems. Casper regarded her for a moment before stepping into the shadows. His business was with the darkness. Fanged wondered if giving him a shadow injection had been a brilliant idea, or if she had just given a troublemaker more tools to work with. The truth was likely somewhere in the middle. She stuck her hand in the river, allowing the water to stream over her skin. The water was warmer than she had expected. Usually, things were colder underground. She scanned the surface, trying to figure out why the water was warmer. Was there some sort of hot spring nearby? If so, she would need to be careful. She gave a quick glance over at Casper to confirm he was still around.

The environment they were currently in was the perfect place for wildlife to set up residence. It was hardly a surprise when a wild critter decided to make itself known to them. Fanged always felt a bit unsure of herself when it came to taming wild creatures. The green gem dragon exuded grace with every action it made. Casper found the sound it emitted to be rather intriguing. He watched with a calculating gaze. Such a demeanor might seem unfriendly to some, but Casper was not one to be particularly warm and loving. Perhaps it came with the territory of being an ethereal creature. He didn’t move to scare the wild critter off which Fanged took to be a good sign. Instead, she decided that she would take the lead in dealing with their wild friend.
“Hi there sweetie,” she cooed to the gem creature. She crouched down so that she could be on the same level as the creature.

The dragon surveyed the two of them, its head moving slightly as it seemed to take them both it. It let out another grating purr and moved one foot forward, stepping on what seemed to be a gem under its claws, almost as if it were showing off.

Casper tilted his head to the side as the wild creature emitted another, strange sound. He dropped his head, trying to figure out how to respond to this being. Before he could do anything, Fanged stepped closer to the creature and began to interact with the wild dragonoid further. It seemed proud of its collection of gems and looked as though it wanted to show them off. She tried to be nonthreatening as she glanced at the gems.
“That’s a pretty collection you have there,” she told the creature.
The creature was a type that Fanged had experience with before. Gem familiars tended to like collecting gems first and foremost. She crouched down and held her hand out in offering to the wild critter. It was a pretty emerald colour, just like her own familiar that she had back in her kennel. Gem familiars had a certain unearthly beauty to them.

When the girl first approached, the dragon hesitated and pulled back a bit, thinking the girl was after its gems. When the hand was offered, empty and void of gemstone offering, the dragon took it to mean she was coming for its gems. It hissed and crouched lower over the gems, protective. But she had a kind voice and something about it was soothing. And the hand didn't come closer, just held there...
Curiosity was starting to win over and it leaned, ever so slightly, forward to investigate.

The gem dragon being possessive over its gems was to be expected. After all, nature had them instinctively horde the things. Dragons certainly seemed to love their hordes, at least the ones in stories always did. Casper regarded the wild creature warily. He knew that gems could be valuable, but spooking the critter wouldn’t have been a good move. He hung back, sniffing the air to see if he could find something all on his own while Fanged worked to distract the dragon. Instead, the woman continued to speak soothing words to the creature.
“That’s a good dragon. Here look, I have some interesting things of my own.” Fanged slid her backpack down from her shoulders, opening it to show the dragon what she had found. The water crystal that they had found earlier was the most impressive thing. It bright blue colour was entrancing and Fanged was always aware of its low, magical hum.

The gem dragon perked up, way up, when the magic crystal was produced. It inched closer, even leaving its hoard, in order to see it. The magic inside must be calling to the creature, too! It appeared this gem dragon would follow you anywhere, as long as you have that gem on you... and during that time, it may just come to love you on its own.
[Congrats! You have tamed the Gem Dragon!]

The gem dragon appeared impressed with the magical crystal she had shown it. Casper seemed to respect the dragon’s admiration of power. The magic crystal had been a good enough find to justify ending their journey a bit early. Getting out was a bit easier said than done. Casper was an adept navigator, but he didn’t know this type of terrain as naturally as a gem familiar did.
“Come on Casper, let’s go back the way we came.”
Casper was eager enough to get going. The gem dragon too had no issue with following them back the way they had come. It wasn't like there were any other options for where to go anyway. There was a lot more danger in staying here than there was in going back. They would have to keep moving to avoid being caught by the wild creatures that lived around these parts. Some could be deadly.

Even if they managed to escape those, there were also the predators that hunted down travelers. The walk back through the mines was done mostly in silence. Casper was not a particularly vocal creature and the gem dragon seemed a little wiped out from the excitement of meeting a new person and befriending them. Fanged usually filled the silence with monologuing, but she was feeling rather wiped herself. Darkness met her vision as she ducked down one of the paths they had taken before. The terrain was rocky and a bit more difficult to travel in this direction. Casper bounded past them when he figured that Fanged and the gem dragon were taking to long to find the proper route. With the Balgor leading them ahead, they found the exit faster than anticipated. Fanged made sure to secure the gems she had found in her backpack before leading the two of them back home.

It had been a while since Fanged had gone to the mines with Phi. The mining familiar was champing at the bit to get some work done and the woman was more than happy to oblige. The mines were dark which was to be expected, but Fanged still found it to be unnerving. She grabbed her flashlight and made sure it was switched on. The Raikiri was quick to charge ahead, her eyes narrowed as she immediately sought out the presence of gems. "Well, there's nothing here so far," Fanged said, scanning the area with her light. "I can't see anything." Phi paused for a moment and scanned the area as well before concluding that Fanged was right. That meant they wouldn’t need to linger by the entrance for very long. She led them deeper into the mine. As they went further in, the ground began to slope steeply downwards. (Phi 19 1/5, 21 1/5) 96

They had come to a section where there were easy path leading down and Fanged stopped and looked around. Phi followed her, keeping her eyes fixed on the ground as she tried to spy any easy gems to grab. There was nothing obvious so she moved back up the slope to check another section.
Fanged suddenly yelped and fell over backwards. Her body went flying through the air and landed with a thud against the wall behind her. It had been like an invisible force had pushed her over. Phi glanced over at her in concern and trotted back to make sure that the woman was okay. She was a bit shaken up, but Fanged had experienced worse. She dusted the dirt from her pants and retrieved her flashlight from where she had dropped it. She started walking again, but then paused after a few steps. A dizzy spell hit her.

Phi gave her a glance of concern, but Fanged simply waited for the sensation to pass. After a minute or two, she continued on, her senses heightened now that she had an urgency of danger. Phi walked alongside her, following her lead. The further they went, the darker it became. That was the negative aspect of the mines. Seldom would they find an area of light. Occasionally, there would be a small patch of brightness, but usually, the light came from the entrance. The farther in they went, the dimmer it became until eventually, their only source of illumination was the flashlight. Fanged sucked in a deep breath as she attempted to steady her nerves. She needed to gain some sense of bravery if she wanted to deal with the mines. She had quite a bit of experience by now, but her confidence was still low in dark and confined spaces.

She kept telling herself that she had gotten this far and that she could do it again. Her thoughts were interrupted when she spotted a glimmer of light ahead. It was a single gemstone, reflecting the beam of light. Phi approached it first, curiosity evident in her gaze. The gemstone was much too big to take with them and for some reason, Fanged was quite certain it wouldn’t be able to be broken into pieces either. If they could get it home, they might be able to sell it for a good price, but she wasn't willing to risk causing a tunnel collapse trying to extract pieces of it. Furthermore, she didn’t want to waste time on attempting something that might not be possible in the first place.
“Let’s move on,” she murmured to Phi.
The Raikiri silently agreed with her and the two of them headed further down the path, the flashlight guiding them.
