Riku left the one shop and headed for the next while he was still in the city. Fortunately, he was able to stop by his own to drop off the berries and Lotine food he’d picked up already. He...wasn’t exactly sure what he was going to do with that rainbow fish...apparently now he needed a fish tank? Oh! He could add them like koi fish into his zen garden room. Now that was an idea.
As he entered the Herbologist’s Delight, he smiled and searched the air with his nose for that usual cookie smell. He really appreciated Alura for those. Gods, she was so pleasant. He’d have to buy her flowers sometime to show his appreciation. Being a new shop on the block and just down from such a successful and generous businesswoman was a blessing.
He greeted her with his usual grin and said “Hi again, I’m actually buying stuff this time and not just asking for tips of balancing my shop checkbooks.” He chuckled as he said it and pulled out a list, reading it to himself.
Alura wiped her hands off on her apron and smiled at him, "Of course dear! What can I get for you today? Cookie?" She added the last as a bit of an afterthought. Most people knew they could get free cookies from her shop, but just in case...
Riku’s grin turned into one of purer excitement when she offered the cookie. “You know me.” he said, reaching out and grabbing one. He smelled it for a second to see what flavor she had chosen for the day. It was cut into a usual flowery shape to match the theme of her shop, and he could see either raisins or chocolate chips. He pressed one edge under the base of his nose, smelled the cinnamon, and felt the residual warmth of the oven. Taking a bite, he felt the melting sensation and immediate flavor of cocoa - but there was also a more bitter sweetness that was chewy.
“Chocolate and raisins?” he said, covering his mouth as he finished that first bite. “You are a bold genius! Someone needs to do something about you. Where is your trophy?” he joked, grabbing another one and putting it into his bag for later. It’d be best to keep the rest for other people to enjoy.
Back to business, he stood upright again and changed his tone to one that was more appropriate. “Anyway, I’ve taken up gardening again recently. The Leaf Scatter and King of the Evergreen you sold me a while back have been so great there. I decided to invest in a few more friends to keep them company.” He handed her the list he had ready.
"Of course!" Alura said happily, taking the list, "Please look around for a bit to see if there's anything else you'd like while I round up the critters for you." She went to the back to get the animals for him.
Riku nodded and let the shopkeeper slip away to do what she needed to. He slid his fingers across the edge of the counter as he walked to one side and smiled at the potted flowers on display. Leaning in, he sniffed the purpler bundle. He didn’t know what type it was, but he had seen it before. Flowers and plants were still a bit new to him. He had a good chunk of experience in the garden, and he had definitely read some books. It was just the specific details like names and traits that still escaped him. However, that was part of why he was there...to further his garden’s potential.
He knew if he has more creatures in his garden, that he’d spend more time there. He also knew that many of the creatures he was purchasing were seasonal and harvestable. That was an intriguing incentive to continuously spend time with them and study their anatomy and behavior.
When Alura came back, he had built the confidence to barter a bit. He had already done some math in his head at what he thought was a reasonable amount. “Thanks for your help, Alura. I was wondering if I could maybe get everything for 1,076 credits, since I’m sort of buying in bulk...?” He showed his charming smile to better his chances - after making sure he’d picked all the raisins out of it, of course.
He watched the older woman place the collective leashes on the post and wondered how difficult it would be to take them home. So many creatures as once, all different sizes, and possibly not getting along with each and every one of them. He’d find a way!
After her proposal, he gave her a playful look while he was thinking about the offer. It was a bit more than he’d hoped for...but he was buying a lot. She had a business to run. And he’d probably eaten more than the difference in cookies over the last few weeks. Did he give in now, or play her hard?
Nah, he’ll make up for the difference at Tinker’s Trinkets. That guy was a sucker for proper language. “Oh, alright, you’ve got me.” He kept eye contact while he snatched a few more cookies and shoved them in his pockets. “But I’m taking these with me!” He laughed, handing over the credits.
"Very well dear, good luck with your gardening!" Alura called to him, waving at him after she made sure to count the credits.
