“Peter’s father...” she continued once the innocent ears were out of range, “..he had a disease. His body started to shut down when Peter was just a baby...it was slow, but it took him from us.” She paused, looking into the distance through the nearby desk with the lamp that barely lit the room. “I’m so sorry...” Riku comforted, not knowing what else to say. He just stood there and tried to respectfully not fidget during her apparent monologue. “Sometimes I think Peter only recognizes his dad’s face through pictures. I don’t think he actually remembers him....but I’m kind of happy for that. It means he doesn’t remember enough to truly miss.” A thud was heard above them, followed by a teasing remark by the boy that couldn’t be understood. Clearly there was more than just cocoa going on up there, but it was fine while the adults spoke. “Peter started having symptoms last year, just like his father’s...”

“The doctor’s said it’s good that they caught it when he was young. This way he can live with it and make habits to keep it under control. Medicine. Stretches. A controlled environment...” she bit the corner of her lower lip and turned away. Clearly she loved her son, and she would do anything for him. She seemed like a good woman....just a concerned one. “He can’t go outside very often, only when it’s overcast. And only when the temperature is moderate. He can’t go to public school. He has no friends.” “So you figured an animal companion would help.” Riku finished the thought for her, assumedly. She nodded. “I understand....when I was younger....” he faded for a second, with a flash of fire behind his eyes, and sounds of terror in his mind. “I also was isolated. My family adopted a Malii to keep me company. His name was Revelation, Cameron’s father.” He reached out and put his hand on hers. “It did help.”

“Thank you...” she said, with tears forming in her eyes that she held back. Riku didn’t acknowledge them, knowing he wouldn’t want someone to for his own emotions on display. “You can see why I really need Biscuit to be okay. He means so much to Peter.” her lip quivered and she covered her face again with one hand. “I want to help.” he assured her. “I’ll race you downstairs, Cammie!” they both heard echoing from the other room. “C’mon!” Peter screamed in excitement. “Hey, no running on the stairs!” the woman shouted, turning her head away from the company as not to shout in his face. They could hear the clumsy thumping and scratching of Cameron’s paws as he tried to race the boy. “I told you, no running down the st-“ “Agh!” screeched the child as a sharp clud was heard, followed him him clearly falling down the rest of the way.

“Peter, no!” Riku shouted as the woman screamed in shock. He darted out of the living room before the mother could even properly react, and swooped down and lifted the boy into his arms as he folded his legs criss-criss on the floor at the bottom of the stairs. He elevated the child’s head with his right arm as he checked his body for obvious damage with his left. Both Cameron and the mother made their way to them at the same time. The woman fell to her knees beside the two boys, and cupped her hands around her child’s face. “Peter!?” She screamed for him. His eyes were closed, and his pupils were barely shifting underneath them. His expression was stuck in that of pain, but his body was limp. He made no sounds. “Peter, wake up, honey!” “Peter....” Cameron cooed, somberly through the ribbon. “Is he okay...?” he looked to Riku for an answer.

Riku wasn’t a doctor...he didn’t know anything beyond some survival skills and first aid. He looked helplessly at the Malii, “I....I don’t know.” he said with eyes wide. He wasn’t the leader here - not intentionally. He didn’t know what to do. This wasn’t what they came here for. The woman sat, sobbing as she held her son, “Petie, please...wake up, Honey.” and Cameron moved closer, leaning in to sniff the boy. He smelled his forehead where he had clearly hit his head and lovingly licked it, leaving a soft-glowing trail behind his tongue - and no wound. “Mommy?” the young boy said, opening his eyes. “Petie!” She screamed, pulling him out of Riku’s arms to hold him. “I had a dream that Cameron saved me...” “That wasn’t a dream, Peter.” Riku smiled, looking over to thank his Malii - but he wasn’t there. A joyful bark was heard coming out of the next room, as the Rakai-Sarane rushed in to greet them, his renewed mane flowing brightly. “BISCUIT!” both the woman and the child exclaimed, joining him into their hug. Riku smiled at his Malii, proud as ever, as the creature sat in the doorway to the room and allowed the boy to reunite with his proper companion. He looked to his own, and said “I can heal.”
