After all, it wasn't like the fossil creatures were natural. Very little biological material could be gleaned from those old bones and ambers, so what was built from them was vaguely based on those sources as opposed to anything real. Apparently feeding them particular foods or encouraging particular behaviors helped them "settle in" from their more generic forms. Fiera glanced at Sasha- hopefully she was proving to be a good influence on the little creature. She had been feeding her a good, albeit mostly plant based diet, taught her proper obedience, spent time with her and kept her clean and healthy. That was enough, right? Though Fiera supposed that she wouldn't really know what "not good enough" would look like- a small, pathetic creature? One that was unhealthy? Or just one that wasn't to her personal tastes? ...Though she would have to wonder how Sasha would even know to develop into that last one.

No, Fiera supposed, so long as Sasha was happy, that was the important part. Her other formerly fossilized charges had shown different behaviors after all, different personalities. Serendipity was more faux-adventurous (though still quite young and prone to clinging to Fiera the moment that bravery was actually challenged), and Snapdragon was outright aggressive on occasion, giving Fiera more than a few nicked fingers... though hopefully she could work that out with a bit of obedience training. As a result though, Fiera was sure that they would end up developing down the path that THEY wanted to go, as opposed to Fiera manipulating them too much. So long as she kept them happy and healthy, they would turn out just fine. ...Unlike these hedges, she noted quietly to herself. She had been trying to trim them, but her thoughts had drifted and she had cut more of a big hole in the middle of the hedge.

"Well, that's... I can fix that." Fiera said to herself, wondering how she was going to fix that. She looked down- Sasha was more than willing to take advantage of her mistake, happily munching on the leaves from the branches that had fallen down around her. "Well... at least they aren't going to waste." Fiera muttered to herself as Sasha grunted happily. Fiera leaned back, making a judgement call about the rest of the hedge. It looked like she hadn't cut TOO deeply- she could just trim down the rest of the hedge to approximately match and then let that particular spot grow back out again. No harm done ultimately... right? Fiera sighed and got the clippers ready again- this was just her luck, wasn't it. She began clipping away at the periphery of the hole, getting to work on fixing it. The leaves fluttered to the ground around her easily.

To her surprise though, cutting the hedge did reveal some interesting goodies. Apparently while she hadn't been focusing on the hedge, some vines had taken the opportunity to move in. They weren't cutting off the light from the main body of the bush- far from it. Instead, they seemed to be taking advantage of the low light levels to thrive where few other plants would, growing in relative safety from the outside world and creatures that would eat the whole vine as opposed to just taking a few fruits. Fiera hadn't noticed them, but perhaps that was the point- she WAS one of the large creatures that might end up destroying them. For now though, she was quite pleased, finding a few golden fruits growing deep inside the bush. She couldn't remember if these were particularly edible, but she knew that there were plenty of people out there that would buy them.

She didn't dare pass them to Sasha for a sniff test though. Even if Fiera wasn't sure if she could eat the fruits, she had the feeling that Sasha wouldn't hesitate, regardless of whether or not they were actually edible for her. She didn't want her pet to get a stomach ache, so Fiera put the fruits away safely in her bag for now, away from Sasha's begging little eyes. After ignoring her for a moment though, the little fossil went right back to chewing on the branches Fiera had dropped for her, happy to go back to leaves. Fiera peered into the hole in the bush again, still seeing colors that shouldn't be there in a hedge. This time though they were further away, so she glanced around before plunging her arm in up to the shoulder, feeling around for something that wasn't a bush. Finally, her fingers brushed against something smooth.

Smooth, but hard and solid, not a leaf. She closed her fingers around the tip of it before it could get away and walked them up, finally grabbing the whole object and pulling it out of the bush with a satisfying "snap" of its connection to its vine. She pulled it out- it was about as long as her palm, and bright pink. A bunana. Ah, these. She had found several of them by now. They were pretty to be sure, but they were pretty much only edible by orbaru. Just for the hell of it, Fiera had tried one once (in her own garden, while nobody was looking) and it was sour beyond measure. To her, it tasted much like a regular banana, but almost disgustingly soft under the solid peel and yet tasting like it was severely underripe. To orbaru it must be a treasured treat, but she couldn't see the appeal.

Still, she'd keep it. At the very least she could sell it to someone more interested in breeding orbaru than she. They were sweet animals, of course, but Fiera much preferred pachee in all of their adorable wonder. She had many babies waiting to be born now, in fact- she couldn't wait to see how they'd turn out. Fiera smiled as she put the bunana away and picked up the shears once more, getting back to work on trimming the hedge. Breeding creatures was a lot of work, but creating new and fascinating life was a hobby she was happy to have. It wasn't like she couldn't take care of them all- the city had a lot of subsidies for making sure the owners of these creatures had the funds to feed them all. By this point, the humanish was one of the top pachee breeders in the city- not that she had been trying for the title.

It had just sort of... happened. One day she had less than a dozen pachee, and the next she had swarms of them, all happy to see her when she walked into the kennels. It wasn't a bad life to live, all things considered. The smile fell from Fiera's face instantly. Where had THAT thought come from? She kept clipping, harder and firmer on the branches, making her way across. Not a bad life to live. Where was that life five years ago? Ten? Fiera remembered how she came here. The shame. How hard she had worked before coming here, and all for nothing. The lack of gratitude they had for her. Where had her fire gone? Where was her spite? Why WASN'T she more angry? Where was her desire to prove them wrong? She sighed, and heard Sasha munching loudly behind her, not noticing Fiera's sudden rage and upset.

The best revenge was a life well lived, right? That was what Fiera had always heard people say. But she wasn't satisfied with this. Sure, she could live well- but it wasn't enough. She wanted them to seethe knowing that she was right and had gotten away scot free, happy. She did have a good life now, with a bit of elbow grease having been put into it, but she still wasn't satisfied. Perhaps she never would be- that was one of the many, many problems she had that her ex... commander had dropped at her feet shortly before her exile. She lashed her tail angrily. Well, why then? Why couldn't she be satisfied? Perhaps... perhaps because the problems she had been trying to fix all those years ago didn't actually go away. Her people still needed her, even if they now refused to say as much, casting her out into the wider world.

So now she was out here, and they were still in there, with all the issues now left permanently unfixed. She could assume that they would just solve them on their own- but that would mean admitting that they could fix the situation without her, which was COMPLETELY impossible. She was very important. Very. She sighed. She supposed ultimately then, that meant... that she was worried about all her old friends, in spite of everything. She rubbed her temple. There was nothing she could do about it anymore, though- what was the point of worrying when the people you were worrying about had outright said that they didn't want your opinion anymore- and that there would be severe consequences if you tried to help? Fiera had only tried to rid them of their awful leader ONCE after all, and they hadn't even said thank you. She sighed, nearly leaning into the bush.

"Who would have thought loving people would be so complicated, eh Sasha?" She said, mumbling through the branches to the little creature that had parked itself at her feet. She looked down, green eyes meeting green eyes. "You're a lot more simple." She said. And it was true- her pets never asked for much more. Their problems were simple, and they were grateful for the help. And those who weren't... there were no complicated questions. Her harachiu wanted to be real people and create a better life for themselves and other sapient creatures, and so Fiera was trying to facilitate that as best she could, acquiring plots of land and spreading awareness within the political sphere she had parked herself in. There was no war here, and the city was so new that there had been no time for any particular idea to become too deeply entrenched among the population.

It felt almost... too easy. Peaceful. Fiera felt on edge, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Something had to break someday, right? The Labs had be up to SOMETHING deeply unethical- there was no way that level of secrecy would be required if they weren't. But everyone else seemed... so okay with it. Maybe that was what Fiera's role in all this was, then. To be the one person willing to be on edge, to be paranoid enough to stay on guard while everyone else relaxed, so that when something DID go wrong she would be ready for it. No one else would get hurt, because she would be the one catching whatever it was before it could hurt them. That would work. That she could do. Fiera clipped some more branches from the hedges, trimming them effortlessly as she worked through her problems... and probably drawing the wrong conclusions.

Today was a cooldown. Fiera and Mango had been working on training relentlessly for weeks. It wasn't for no reason, of course. The tournament was drawing close, and Fiera was actually mostly done with his training. It hadn't been easy- Mango was an extreme scaredy-cat when he was younger, and getting him to drop that particular attitude was very difficult. For now though, she was taking him on a nice, relaxing walk through her garden. The gate was, to her delight, perfectly greased and didn't squeak at all as she opened it, letting her and Mango into her white picketed garden. She breathed in the cool air, dripping with the scent of spring. Yes indeed, this was a good way to calm down after all that time spent training. Mango seemed to relax too- he always stayed perky and careful when entering new situations, but even he could tell there was nothing to fear from this place.
