Before her stood an empty doorway and a dark interior lit only by candlelight. Jinx crept forward, peering inside and then taking that first step. She didnt see anyone, not at first. It was so dark it took her eyes a few moments to adjust before she could make out shapes. A table was set in the center of a kitchen. Candles here and there. A soft, worn rug under the table and four chairs. Nothing out of place. Then the door slammed shut behind her and she nearly jumped out of her skin. She hadn't thought there was any wind blowing at all, let alone enough to catch the door and slam it so hard. Slowly, she turned around, expecting to see an old crone hovering over her shoulder, claw-like fingers reaching out for her delicate throat. But nothing and no one was there.
Feeling a shiver go down her spine, Jinx walked in further. Should she call out a greeting?

It would be rude not to say hello. But if she announced herself, would it make it that much harder to retrieve the item she sought? Torn, she just stood there for a moment longer, and a moment was all that was needed for her to be found out.
Silently, and almost shadow-like, the woman appeared in the doorway. She was old, indeed, and hunched over, her fingers bent with use and arthritis. She held, of all terrifying things, a mug of some hot tea, which she brought to her lips to take a little sip. Her hands shook so bad, Jinx half expected some tea to spill down her front. Instinctively, Jinx reached out for the first thing she could find - thankfully, an old wash cloth from the counter and not something more valuable.
"Here, Miss," she said, gesturing. "It looks like you might have spilled a little there..." She dabbed at the side of the cup, and the bottom, trying not to let a sticky mess happen.

"Oh. Thank you, dearie," said the old lady, holding still to let Jinx help her. "I was wondering who was at my door, I don't normally get many visitors..." She shuffled forward to a table and set down her mug of tea, then she sat herself down, heavily, onto one of the chairs. Jinx stood a moment longer, not wanting to impose, but the old lady gestured with a hand to indicate she sit down. And she did. Jinx leaned forward across the table, earnestly.
"I didn't mean to barge on inside like that, I didn't know if anyone was home." It sounded terrible to even her own ears. 'I didn't know anyone was home so I came inside in case someone wasn't home'? There was no way this woman would appreciate that. Somehow, her words earned a chuckle out of the woman, which sounded raspy and dry. Jinx braced herself, still half expecting a curse.

The curse never came. Instead, the lady caught Jinx's eye and held it. Suddenly, she seemed younger and more fit than she had a few moments ago, and there was a new agility in her as she reached out to grab Jinx's hand. "Tell me, miss. Do you know how to read the Tarot? Would you like a reading? The first one is free."
Jinx would be lying if she said she hadn't nearly wet herself when the woman grabbed her arm like that. Her grip was strong and solid, with no hope of breaking free. How odd, for a woman so frail in appearance, to feel instead like she was made out of steel! Because of this, there was a heavy moment when Jinx's jaw nearly scraped the floor, the words sinking in and her brain trying desperately to put them together into something that made sense. She could only nod; she did enjoy the art of divining the answers to questions through cards and pictures and meanings!

"Great. How lovely!" The old woman produced a well worn deck from a pocket in the shawl she wore. With a little bit of a struggle, she shuffled the deck, waving her hands dramatically as she did. The cards went together in a blur, then she placed the deck on the table. "Cut?" Jinx obliged, cutting the deck into thirds and stacking the new sections on top of one another. The lady took the deck back, finished, and drew three cards, placing them on the table between them.
"Past, present, and future," Jinx murmured, recognizing the layout. The lady nodded and started flipping cards. Together, they went over the meanings of the past and present cards, with the lady emphasizing certain aspects to make a prediction, and Jinx nodding appreciatively as certain key aspects that pertained to her life jumped out at her.
Then they got to the Future card, and as it flipped, Jinx felt dizzy, felt the world tilt, and everything seemed to glow purple as she slumped in her chair. One thing echoed in her mind: "Must find the item!" And one image, as if answering the call, danced behind her eyelids.
It was here.
