Their shears easily snipped through the stalk of the plant, allowing them to take just the flower and top couple of leaves, and place it into the basket. One down, a few more to go. They quickly bounced from one flower to the next, easily snipping them and putting them aside with a rhythm that suggested a lot of practice. They took just enough time to be sure that each flower was treated gently.
Every few minutes, they looked up to see how Sencha was doing. She bounced around after one bug, then another as she scared them out of the grass. Her mere presence made every living thing she approached bolt away, and she was more than happy to go running off after each one. The Lerrel ran off in a random direction each time, only to come back bounding after another new thing. On average, she ended up more or less where she started. Perfect.

With the last live bits of lavender in the basket, it was time to cut out what was left. They moved the basket of goodies out of the way so they could bring another, larger one over to hold the scraps. Since it was the end of the season, everything else could be removed. They didn’t need to be careful about making room for fresh growth until most of it was pulled out.
It was a bit cathartic to wrap their paws around a clump of leaves and yank it out of the ground. The stiff, dry soil fell away from the roots without much encouragement. What was left of the plant was unceremoniously tossed into a pile in the new basket to be turned into compost later. While it was important not to completely destroy the bed for next season, the careful and meticulous attention still growing plants needed was unnecessary here.

As the new basket started to fill with plant debris, Silver thought it was a good idea to empty it before it got too heavy to lift. They managed to get it up to their chest and awkwardly started waddling toward the compost pile. It was times like these that they thought they might want to consider a smaller garden. Well, it would be over soon enough.
Since they couldn’t see their own feet through the basket, they shuffled forward in an ungainly manner. They were liable to trip on something if their steps were too big. This caused them to bump right into Sencha as she went zooming past. They kicked her in the side with their toes.
“Ah! I’m sorry,” they said, not entirely sure what had happened. All they could feel was a bump followed by a squeak. What would they do? If they dropped the basked it might harm whatever made the sound, but if they didn’t, they couldn’t tend to it.

Silver twisted their body awkwardly, and the motion nearly made them drop the basket. They managed to force it to land on a nearby stump, and thankfully they didn’t squish any little creatures on the way. At least they were pretty sure they didn’t. If there was a cute little bug there, well, they’d be better off not knowing about it.
The weight of the motion continued through them and they tumbled to the ground. The whole thing felt like it was happening in slow motion, yet at the same time it seemed like they blinked and suddenly they were on the ground. They glanced around to make sure that everything was alright. They couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary, so they breathed a sigh of relief.
Quin squawked with alarm and landed on the basket to look down on the scene. Something had happened! He better tell Silver all about it.

Oh, Silver was right there. He did his job, whether he really needed to or not. “Thank you,” Silver mumbled, knowing that if they didn’t acknowledge it, Quin would keep yammering on.
“Are you alright?” Silver said, finally starting to understand what happened. Sencha was scowling up at them, clearly showing her displeasure. They kicked her! That was unacceptable. If it had been anyone else, she would have run off already, but she trusted them. That made them feel even worse.
“Oh I’m sorry little one,” Silver said. They reached a hand out, offering some scritches as an apology. Sencha chirped cutely and hopped over. She did like scritches, but she still looked a little cautious, just in case they had any other surprises in store for her.
“I know, I know,” they mumbled in a sympathetic tone. It was tough to see her hesitate, and only served to make them feel more guilty.

It wasn’t even their fault! She ran out in front of them, after all. Still, she had no way of really understanding the two events as being related from her perspective. Luckily, she was more than ready to forgive and forget.
Sencha hopped over and pressed her head into Silver’s outstretched hand. She chirped cutely and used their fingers to rub against her ears. Silver smiled, clearly glad that she was feeling better. They wiggled their fingers against her ear, causing her to press against them to get it in just the right spot.
“There we go,” they said. It was nice to see that she came around so quickly, and they didn’t even need to bribe her with a treat. Though that was a good idea, actually. They could give her a treat to keep her out of the way while they were dragging heavy things around.
