Renathan had no idea how these things worked. He didn't really think that anyone did. No one had heard from that head scientist that he'd learned about from talking with others since he had even made it to Pethia. He had no idea what to think about any of this; for all anyone knew, these bonds that seemed to occur naturally with the creatures made by the labs seemed to be... Well, dangerous possibly. If it weren't for Renathan's stubborn and caring nature, he probably would have stopped training creatures a long time back just in case it was dangerous. He stared at the jibiji sitting on the table while he gave her back a gentle petting, and then he gently touched her wings. This was also very rewarding, the whole creature training thing, but sometimes he wondered. He hadn't really thought about the fact that he could just simply be depressed and a bit lonely.

Renathan finally pulls himself from his thoughts, and decides that he needs to train Auburn how to dive. He had trained behaviors with her using all kinds of different ways, but the flight commands were some of the hardest due to trying to get her to perform the correct one with no real context. So far, he'd gotten lucky that she understood him well enough to generally get it within one or two tries. This one should be easy enough, however, he figured, since she did tend to dive in order to land. He was lucky that Auburn seemed to love to show off! Renathan had to think of how to do this properly though. He'd probably have to call the command out right before she went to drop. It was certainly good that he knew her well enough to know what her body language tended to mean; he'd know right when she went to dive that way.

Renathan took a quick moment to give Auburn one more pet on her head, before sitting back and straightening his back. She knew his body language quite well, and began paying rapt attention to him, her bright eyes taking in some kind of indication as to what he wanted or expected from her. Renathan could not be more proud, he was noticing small things about her body language as well more and more as of late, and he could tell that the tiny jibiji was really starting to pick up when he wanted something. Renathan called her up into the air without any difficult at all, and just watched her fly around for a moment or two. He really loved watching creatures fly; he knew that at some point he would have to find a flying mount and really start working on flying himself. Renathan took a breath, and then right when the jibiji as at a steep level to the table landing zone, he called out the command to land; and then called out, "Waeri!" louder, and clearer than the landing command, just as he noticed that Auburn was going to dive that time.

Auburn certainly heard the new command, and being a member of a bird species that tended to communicate through unique calls and songs, she understood that she hadn't heard this one before, and that it had to mean something. She also was used to being trained at this point, so it was no real shock to her that there was a new song and dance that was being shown to her. Renathan was happy to see her dive steeply to the table, as per usual. Renathan quickly gave her a seed and lots of petting. He was very glad that she had done so well! Of course, he'd expected this to happen, because she almost always dived down to land. Renathan waited until she finished her seed, and then called her up into the sky again. He really did love to watch her fly... Then, he called out the same term again. "Waeri!" He watched as she circled an extra time, trying to figure out what to do.

Renathan was about to give up and call her down with the landing command when she surprised him; diving down as though she figured that she might as well try that. Renathan was pleased, to say the least! The tiny jibiji made her way safely down to the table; her wings folded most of the descent and then flying open to land safely on the table at the last second. Renathan could not be happier; he knew that now he could get her to dive without landing if he kept working now. Renathan quickly gave her lots of praise and a seed for her correct action taken, and then he began to plot how to teach her to start doing this without touching the ground, since diving wasn't landing, after all. The tiny jibiji finished her seed quickly enough, tossing the shell off to the side away from her. Renathan held in a chuckle at this, and then figured out what he was going to do.

Renathan's idea was pretty simple. He was going to order to the air; and hold up a larger seed for her. He figured that if he called out to dive, and she dived to grab it, that she would not be able to land and would therefore have to continue to fly; that was the diving was no issue. He figured that if she didn't catch on immediately, that she would catch on quite quickly at least. She always seemed so bright, picking up things quite cleverly. She was not quite as cerebral as Lisle, and not quite as reflective as Shy Guy, but she was quite happy and quick to pick up on verbal cues. Renathan figured it had something to do with her being avian. Renathan stood up and backed off, holding a pouch of seeds in his fingers. He then pulled a single seed out, and called Auburn up into the air. Time for practice!

Auburn quickly flew around him in circles, eyeing the large dark seed he had in his hand. He wanted to make sure that she had seen it at first; and planned to quickly switch to a smaller seed as soon as she had this one. Renathan knew that thanks to her limbs, she could carry multiple seeds at once. Renathan called out to the small jibiji, "Waeri!" He said, his voice strong and sure in the air. The tiny creature didn't have to be told twice; she did the diving motion, easily removing the seed from his hand; her wing beats leaving a soft patter of wind across his fingertips but not any worse; before she lifted back up into the air; not quite having enough space to land. Renathan gave her lots of praise verbally; and felt a responding hum of happiness from across her side of the empathy link. Yes, he knew that would be fine enough to let her know that she did a good job.

Renathan was proud that this was working out well, so far. She learned via the verbal commands quite a bit faster than his other creatures, after all. Renathan watched as the tiny jibiji flew about easily; her arms separate from her wings in action and physically; allowing for her to attempt to eat on the fly. Renathan was quiet for a moment, and then pulled out a much smaller seed this time. He knew that sooner or later, she would stop wanting more seeds, since she couldn't stay hungry forever! Renathan chuckled. He may have to forgo her mid-day mealtime, at this rate. Renathan could see her discard the seed's shell from the sky, and he chuckled at the idea of a whole flock of jibiji dropping such things. That idea was quite funny! Renathan held up the seed so that she could see it; and then called out the command yet again.

"Waeri!" He called, and the jibiji wasted no time diving downward, getting much better at it as she continued to perform the action. Her wings folded close to her as she dove down, and then opened to allow her to quickly grab the small seed that Renathan held in his fingers up for her. She seemed pleased with herself whenever she went up into the sky afterward, flapping her wings to gain altitude a bit, but never too far away from Renathan. Renathan was quick to praise her for doing well, as loudly as he could. Renathan did not feel bad about the noise at all; since he had not seen many others training their creatures in this area in well over six months. He didn't figure that he would be breaking into anyone else's training sessions with the noise. Renathan then pulled out another seed, fishing around in the bag for a smaller one.

Renathan knew that they would have to go home after they finished this particular training bit, because he could tell that Auburn was not quite as interested in the seed she was currently holding, even though she did seem to be game for doing the training anyway. Renathan did not want to mess up any of the training with her; he'd always traditionally used seeds with her, after all. He knew that changing a ton of things would make creatures a little more anxious when they were smaller, with his experience, and he didn't want to stress them before the time was due. With Auburn, Renathan was sure that she could deal with some mild stress, but he hated to think about it... Renathan draws himself from his mental reverie, as he catches sight of Auburn finishing her seed. Renathan held up another seed, and called out "Waeri!" Yet again. She dives down quickly and easily, and grabs the piece of seed.

Renathan was so proud, happy that she was catching this so quickly! They didn't have much more time, anyway, so he figured that the next few attempts would be fine to get the idea stuck in her head. After she finished her seed and threw the seed casing away, Renathan happily held up another smaller one for her. "Waeri!" He called out calmly. He was not surprised to see her dive down and take the seed. Then, Renathan got a great idea. He began running her through several commands, including the catch commands he'd worked on previously. Then, Renathan called out the command without another seed; "Waeri!" Auburn did not have any trouble pulling into a steep dive, and then pulling out close to the ground, flying back up into the air. Renathan was pleased that she seemed to still be able to make her own decisions about the moves... Yes, this was good enough for today.

Renathan was back the next day with his beloved Jibiji, knowing that they were getting quite close to finishing the last few things on the list to train her. He didn't know really how he felt about that; he knew that there were other creatures that needed training, but he would sorely miss working with Auburn because she was just adorable. Well, that and it was really easy to work with a familiar instead of wasting magical energy to leave them at home... That was terrifying sometimes. Renathan was a bit afraid that someday he'd have to use his magic to protect himself, and that he won't have enough energy. Renathan sat down, putting Auburn on the walnut wood park table, the one he'd always trained her at, and then he took a moment to feel the warmth of the spring sunshine. The sky was very clear today... Renathan decided that they would start out with something pretty easy today.

The mammalian had wanted to train Auburn to shake yes and no, but not to verbal cues. His idea had been to train her these commands to hand signals, which he would then make very inconspicuous to anyone not looking; this way he could make it look like she was nodding or shaking her head to answer various questions. He figured that this would be cute and very funny, as he could come up with jokes on the fly during contests to suit the audience. That was what he thought, anyway. Renathan figured that at least, the tiny creature would pick these up quickly enough so that he could figure out what to train next. He had decided that the command for this would be him touching his pinky and thumb together. He really hoped that Auburn would get the command just as quickly even though it wasn't verbal. She did take to verbal commands quite well, after all.

Renathan caught Auburn's attention without much difficulty, since she was used to this being the 'training' place; not that she probably thought of it that way. She was quite used to being trained here, after all this time. Renathan held his right hand's pinky and thumb together, and then uses his left hand to gently guide her head up and down using her chin. Afterwards, he quickly gives her a seed, to show her that yes they were training, and yes she did something good. Even if he had helped her; that was typically how they did this. Renathan waited until the small avian ate her seed, and threw the seed casing away from her. Renathan was very happy; the sun was just warm enough and he was really ready for the weather to warm up. He never really liked the snowy weather. Renathan holds his hand up again, holding his pink and thumb together.

Auburn stared at him blankly; probably for the first time since he had been training her, and Renathan had to catch and hold his breath in order not to bellow out laughing. Of course she would have a hard time learning a non-verbal command! That was why this was so important, she needed to know how to tell when there was a physical command going on. Renathan held his hand out near her, quietly, and showing the pink to thumb command. Then, he gently used his left hand to have her nod a few times. Then, he stopped this at the same time as removing the command. Then he praised her, and gave her a small seed. He could suddenly feel what had to be realization come through the empathic link as she took the seed and began gnawing at it. Renathan knew that she would probably pick this up quite quickly after this.
