Perhaps stranger still that it looks to be a humanoid shape, which is a sharp contrast to anything else seen in the courier's company prior. And, well, arguably it's debatable whether anyone would even consider her 'company', considering the distance she keeps between them - It seems the sprite is ever bit unwilling to get closer than she needs to in order to keep him in sight, than she is to leave the area. So much so that he has to occasionally pause and catch glances over the shoulder to ensure she's still even there.
Not exactly the most conventional fishing company, but then again, what better time to learn about new acquaintances than when there's nothing else to stare at other than the babbling brooks and quietly running streams? And there's certainly.. quite a lot to figure out at that, considering the sprite's acquisition was something of an unorthodox type situation.

Now, the man had barely brushed with things of fey-like nature in entirety. He understands the stories, the fables, the legends, even some of the rather.. peculiar ways those come to life here in the city's lands. It almost seems like in one shape or another the fey are either inhabitants or supplicants to some of the places here. Perhaps enough so to make one just that bit uncomfortable at cross-referencing some fables to potential truths (Especially in that the fables don't really paint that much better a picture as anything else - Everyone likes a good story of duplicitous characters, but no-one likes actual real-life deceivers).
Just that bit.. but not enough, for this particular sprite looks to be lacking something all the others have - A certain spark in the eyes, a level of understanding beyond the simplistic (And in that, the man can see quite a deal of value, if not use).

Add on the fact the sprite can seemingly take wing, is oft referenced in materials as 'messenger' and can seem to have the ability to manipulate tools even if not quite understanding their make or purpose, and you have something which could in most simplest terms be dubbed 'curious'. (And such few things are, that finding one is all the more worthwhile to study).
Of course, the first step in any study-like progress is the inevitable hurdle with anything having half an animal mind, regardless of if it's a sharp one at that. The sprite wont approach too close, because even though she's not the sharpest of her kin, she's none the less no fool to instincts. And those instincts are no doubt whispering several concerning questions to her mind (A part of him does wonder, purely for scientific reasons, what that must feel like. That sense of unease and fear somehow creeping in from something you can't see or understand).

Which is to say, he understands her reservations, regardless of their justifications. Neither of them can exactly control what causes something to be or become fearful, so really they're in the same boat. Proverbially, that is. In actuality the courier spends the better part of their walk towards the riverside trying to pick a decent enough spot. Something with some seclusion, as to not end up stepping on anyone else's marine toes (Picky as folks can be) while also not overtly looking to be hiding away from the public eye.
It's more tougher than some might give him credit for, but he eventually finds a nice enough bend in the river and settles his things within the semi-island of the u-shaped loop. Having learned from previous experiences, the courier's had the mind to bring two buckets this time, one set within the other, in case the river's bounty ends up just too much for one.

Not that he expects it to, as the waters can be ever fickle in their nature, but with a fresh batch of bait and hooks on hand they might end up being here for most of the day, seeing how things go. Plus, it's far easier to carry everything divided between two, than having one heavy thing to just one side (And that's no counting anything else mean they might encounter). Looking to have settled on a spot, the sprite lands a good distance off onto a standalone boulder, still quite far from any of the water. Of course, it's not the water that she fears, but given the frail nature of her kind it's not exactly outside the risk-assessment equation, either.
The bucket settled, the courier begins to unwrap the rest of the tools. The polearm with the net is unravelled, the fishing rod itself assembled from its pieces and properly strung, the various bobbers and other assisting factors added.

But something perhaps more surprising being the net that gets picked out of a bag and carefully unrolled along the grassy patch. More so for it's state, for the ragged, torn, beaten thing that had snagged both pup and humanish looks quite a bit different now than it had then. The holes have been patched with new line, the debris untangled and cleared, some of its cork floaters cleaned while others look about as new as the webbing itself in parts. Not something he could take credit for, of course.. but it pays to have connections and there's no more connections for the courier than the docks, with its various workmen, craftsmen and various professions of all kinds.
Including, as it turns out, some old-fashioned net-makers who didn't mind a bit of a challenge with the raggedy mess he had dragged back last time (The fact the challenge came with monetary compensation certain didn't hurt either).

Should something come at them sideways again, the freshly repaired net was the best tool for the job in containing it, perhaps even taming it. One can hardly fight a fish the length of your own arm span with a tiny piece of metal that's more scrap for feed than tool half the time. And while the polearm with the net had proven useful in the past, it was rather luck that secure the catch that day than any real skill.
Something which he's still looking to hone (Admittedly more out of some frustration at being tricked by something that exist as a cold lump of muscle and nerve endings, rather than any real motivation towards mastery. He can put together a multi-part scheme on limited time and resources as if it's an afterthought, and yet keeps being tricked by something that thinks the pointy end of a shiny barb is the most delicious thing in the world. It would honestly be embarrassing if it didn't track with the courier's own degree of spoken skill).

With the tools arrayed and assembled, the next step is to have a lay of the waters, see what sort of options they're up against. The hook of the river's bend offers opportunities the man hadn't encountered before, in that he could leave one line to either end, the better to hedge one's chances. It also means having to keep an eye on more than one thing, but he's confident his reactions should serve him well enough there (And perhaps in this he can remember a use for the shadow in future trips).
As the humanish fusses about with the fishing lines and nets, the sprite remains where she was upon the rock. In truth she is actually more 'behind' it, then upon it, but she can't hide entirely if she's looking to have any sort of view at all. It's quite strange to have a relationship that's so undefined as the one present, for neither really knew what to expect of the other.

In the man's mind the sprite has potential for convenience, for a flighty messenger could certainly make for easier correspondence between certain contacts. From the sprite's mind she understood this terrifying aura to belong to someone connected with food and shelter. While it's not that much then the sprite certainly had even less before landing in the strange little box that eventually ended up being opened in the basement of a strange new area. The strange things kept continuing from there and, in a way, have not technically stopped, but until she can confirm such suspicions she isn't about to risk going hungry.
The sprite might not have been as bright as the shadow, but she understood survival priorities. Until there's any wrong move made to tell otherwise, it's best to remain near certain securities.
Near the riverbank the courier finished securing the first of the hooks to the fishing line, adding to it one of the dead fish for good measure (Perhaps the scent could attract attention to other types). With a pull back and a throw forward, the line is cast into the water.

Time lazes on by in tune with the gradual rush of the river. The summer months might make it run deeper, but it doesn't necessarily make it faster in a lot of the parts, and this little side loop of a river bend is perfect for watching here it comes and seeing where it goes, an eye kept out for anything else that might tangle in between. The sprite? Not so much.. With the area being largely grasslands there's only the singular set of trees and scarce rocks to act as hiding spaces. She could hold out in any one of them only so long before certain instincts made her fidget and squirm, uneasy with staying put in a potentially dangerous area for too long.
At least the man isn't making many motions, so there is that. It's a lot easier to be brave around something stationary than something moving. This isn't intentional on the man's part, of course.

From his end it's more down to there being literally nothing else to do - the line being cast, he'll just need to sit on the bank, watch the waters, and hope there's a catch sooner rather than later. Perhaps occasionally check to see if the bait is still there, but one doesn't wish to do that too many times, lest the fish aren't given enough time to even inspect the lures. There's a deep breath in and out after a while, the serenity of the area enjoyable, if only a bit too much so. The line still sits in the water much as it has, bobbing only to the jilt of the river's current.
One could almost start to think this place is poor for fish, until he glances off to the side, a bit more upriver, and notices some minute splashing close to the shore. Not a current in this case, for the pattern is too random, and quite a bit smaller.

The sprite is quick to duck behind the rock again, as the man suddenly stands up. Keeping sight of the location, he quickly reels in the line and places down the rod in the grass. With nothing tugging on the other end, he doesn't really need to even look at it to know there's no catch to worry about on that end. But.. there just might be something a bit further up.
Cautious and quiet, he picks up the net, attaching the long pole to the end, and begins to creep over. With as many fishermen in these parts as there are, its fair to assume most fish would get wise to the game of seeing a shadow peer over the water and quickly escape. If he's slow enough with the approach, perhaps that's enough to avoid tipping off any presences (Certain auras not withstanding. It's still a fair bit fortunate the smaller fish seem too simple to really catch sense of it).

Sure enough, he's not even quite at the location and he can already see something bright shimmer and dart beneath the surface of the water. Quite close to shore as well, which few enough fish really dare to do. The dimness of the water would make it difficult to spot exact locations (But that's not really a problem for him. The water below might be murky, but the dark does not really protect anyone there). He spends a bit more time observing, now curious as to what drew this fish to wander here so boldly, and the mystery is quick enough to explain itself - there's kelp on the shallows, almost as bright as the fish themselves. So then, perhaps these ones thought themselves safe?
Under normal circumstances, yes. In this case, the sprite sees the man slowly approach, dip the net into the water, and there's a quick sweeping motion that catches something spraying water once its lifted out.

Now, the mansion has no shortage of months with oceanic and watery themes filled to the brim with fish. However, the sprite didn't exist anywhere close to those months so to see a pair of brightly coloured... somethings, plucked from the water causes her to stare a moment, forgetting her hiding. The man brings the net over to the water-filled bucket and upends both fish and the kelp into it, where they settle. There's a wipe of the arms where the water had splashed them damp, and he seems quite pleased with himself - one net, one swing, two fish, and some help. Not bad, if he does say so himself.
If only he could get the lines to be as cooperative and productive. Speaking of, with that sorted, he throws down the net and picks up the rod again, checking the hook. The bait fish that had been on it before is gone (Perhaps explaining the lack of luck), so there's a sigh as he grabs some worms, re-attaches, and casts the line out again.
Perhaps these are more to their liking.
