To that end.. The man turns to look over his shoulder, at the somewhat tall grass that surrounds their little bend in the river. Dull grey wings and a gilded head is quick to duck behind them in response, as if afraid to get caught. In truth she is, though she doesn't quite understand why. He continues to stare over for several more moments, but the sprite's instincts are adamant in keeping her 'hidden' (It's a little difficult to not spot something that has a strong chance to glint in the daylight, considering the sprite is essentially a combination of ash and old gold).
But, she tries. He can respect that, even if realizing there's work to be done regarding that in perhaps the not-so-far future. For now, the main hope is that some semblance of presence and company might be enough to dull the fear.. It doesn't much work to have a messenger who refuses to get close enough to deliver anything.

It's a fine thought to think time and perseverance might be the method to fixing that, but alas he's not quite that lucky. The thing will need training, sooner or later.. Both in not giving in to the fear so openly, but perhaps also to push past similar fears from other sources where able. It's a concept he's tried to exercise once, with a particularly ill-tempered giraffe (Although admittedly the 'ill temper' was more because of his presence, rather than any innate nature, yet again proving that animals and humans not that dissimilar underneath).
Well, maybe instead he had hope the sprite knew how to put those hands to actual use in catching anything in the river, but that, too, seems to be a vain hope. Three beasts to wander the river-side, one intelligent, one with working thumbs and one a pup, and somehow the pup still ends up being the most useful out of the lot.

How's that for irony?
With a silent exhale, the man shifted in his seat on the rock and reached for a pocket. Sometimes close enough is good enough, and he can hardly let her think he's useless to be around. Unwrapping a piece of candy, he underhand slings it over towards her location. It's a strange thing, to discover the sprite's main dietary preference is, oddly, garden produce and confectionaries. But, he supposes that's what one gets when their living environment consists of nothing but gardens and grey-walled houses filled with saccharian delights and flowers.
As the sprite became alerted to this new development, considering her rather rapidly changing objectives, the man pulled the hook out of the water only to see it not so much bone-dry as river-wet. Which is to say it looks like it had been picked clean with a polish on top. Right, well.. If they're going to be that picky about it, fine. They can have some more of the bait they so liked.

 The bait improves things...

Casting the hook back out, the man settles in for another waiting period, but keeps a keen eye open. He's starting to notice a certain preference to the fish, in that the hooks don't seem quite as enticing as the bait sometimes does. One can't necessarily argue a certain degree of logic in this, since having something you can actively eat is certainly better than something only pretending to be edible. Then again, if the pretender is specifically designed to look the most appealing, compared to the commonplace appearance of bait, well..
He's no statician, but even he knows correlation doesn't always equal causality. The fish are just as likely to prefer one over the other randomly, or in certain populace groups. Fish out all of the populace individuals, given enough bait, and you're right back down to facing the original problem where the theories dont match the results, and vice versa.

So it's mostly a roundabout way of stating that he isn't too convinced the fish really can be quantified in such a manner. But they can still be caught, regardless of method..
Behind him, the sprite had inched her way closer to the candy thrown towards her position. Something that incidentally also brought her closer to the man's presence, but the sweet sickly raspberry scent of the bonbon is something she could hardly resist. Up until now the sprite hadn't really made up her mind in regards to the bright looking things the man had continued to pull out of the water, but the approach also served to set that concern to rest - the stench of fish is most evident the closer she gets, and although both scent and fear look to be overlapping auras, even the sprite knows that's not something coming off of the humanoid.
At least.. it shouldn't be.

Whatever those other bright things are, she has decided not to care for. Perhaps its food, perhaps not, but she'll not test that theory if she can help it. The nose wrinkles as the sprite makes a few additional hops closer and finally manages to snatch up the candy. Turning it around in her hands, there looks to be a bit of dirt on the side, from the soft, but still unclean landing.
Even in the sprites somewhat simpler mind, she knows that wont do. Quietly, she begins to creep over towards the water's edge.
In the meantime, there's a twitch in the fishing line, causing the man to sit up straighter and looked over the water. A solid pull, not too erratic.. is this another of those cans again, stuck to the line by the current? He rather hopes not, since not only are they annoying to clean, it rather leaves one to wonder what particular establishment upriver keeps throwing these down.

Supposedly there's a canyon somewhere along the river, up or down he can't remember. A place filled to the brim with dragons (Which, while disdainfully simple to blame for such littering, even he knows aren't really the 'tin cans of food' type. Unless, of course, they lived with other humans, in which case it was fair game).
The tug on the line starts shifting, however, and the hopes of an actual catch are rekindled anew. "That's more like it," he mutters and stands, starting to carefully reel the line in. Not too quick, as to tear it free from the catch, not so slow as to leave the fish able to overly fight back. The bobber moves closer and closer to the shore, though spends more time underwater than above it, and eventually he spots a bit of red against the deep grey-ish green-blue of the river's depths. "There you are.."

With a final pull, the fish lands on the shoreline and starts the usual thrashing. In times past, this would be the part where one would have a nice, solid wooden club.. but he's since stopped fishing for the table, and instead begun to collect for the value. So instead, he grabs the fish by the back, pushing it against the ground to stop it from trashing too badly, "Hold still.." and quickly unhooks the piece of metal from its mouth. After that, it's a dunk into the bucket, where it can start to proverbially lick its wounds in peace.
Another lucky aspect - the hook even stayed intact. So he considers the bait options, elects for something.. a little more eclectic, attaches it, and tosses the line back out again.
In the meantime, the sprite's on a short quest of her own, peering into the river waters as she carefully lowers her hands into the water and starts to clean the piece of candy.
