I bounded forward and saw that he slipped into a tunnel that had been obscured by a trick of the light. I grinned and patted Sha on the back. “Good job, Sha, now lead the way,” I said.
Sha continued to tumble down the tunnel in his own unique way. I glanced back at the cavern we just left, noting how much smaller this tunnel felt. The ceiling was much shorter, requiring me to hunch down to fit. If it got much smaller, I would likely not fit at all. I was curious enough to continue until I could no longer fit.
“Did you hear something? See something?” I asked. Sha was unable to answer, but I continued to muse aloud regardless. It was comforting in such a strange place to hear at least one familiar thing.
As we traveled further into the tunnel, I could see the light begin to change. It danced on the walls, shifting colors as Sha moved along.

I paused, touching my claws to the wall. They shimmered with the colorful light cast upon them. “Wait, Sha,” I said, causing him to freeze in place.
I looked around the rest of the tunnel for the source of the strange light. To my surprise and delight, it was filled with colorful crystals. They glimmered brightly, acting as a prism with the light coming off of Sha. It danced with a flurry of colors across the walls.
I eagerly wrapped my claws around a crystal and yanked it free. The strange crystal was beautiful and I could feel my heart stirring as I turned it over in my hands. It had found an untapped treasure trove all of my own. I could spend ages down here wrenching every last shimmering crystal free.
Except as I considered the plan of action, the crystal in my claw faded away as if it were never really there. I gasped, scraping at the other crystals nearby.

They felt solid. It was not a hallucination. I grasped another small crystal, breaking it free. Just as the last one had, it faded away shortly after being removed from the walls.
“Damn,” I hissed. It seemed obvious that the crystals could not be removed from this area. I sighed deeply. All of my dreams of fortune shattered, fading away just like the crystals. It all felt so hopeless. Why had we bothered to come down here if the only thing around was colorful dust? I snorted into my claw and turned to Sha, ready to tell him we were heading back out. Perhaps we would have better luck heading back the other way down the cavern.
Now that I was turned toward Sha, I could see past him further into the tunnel. I noticed that just behind him, the area opened up further. I could not tell what was past that, but it had my attention for sure.

Trying my luck, I walked past Sha, who quickly scrambled to catch up with me. I wandered past the end of the tunnel into an open cave. The walls suddenly bubbled out in every direction, leaving a large clear opening filled with the unusual crystals. It was hauntingly beautiful, like I imagined my hoard would one day be. I could spend eternity there, but I knew it was all temporary. I could not take any of it with me.
A pool of still clear water at the centre of the cave caught my attention. I dipped my claws in, feeling soothed by the coolness. I had not noticed how tired my claws were until I went to soak them. It was comforting to feel the water again. I could easily forget just how far from home I was until I felt a bit of comfort. I sighed into the still cold air.
"Come here, Sha," I said, beckoning him to the water's edge. "We shall rest."
