The darn bird needed some training. Jewel hadn't gotten around to any formalities with her, just because she was so easygoing, but he supposed that it couldn't hurt. Some people wouldn't appreciate being harassed by a giant chicken - it would be handy to be able to recall her with a word if she was overstepping the mark. The colours of the evening were melting away into black overhead. A scattering of stars were becoming visible, winking against the dark backdrop; he stared at them and felt something wistful. As much as he was grateful for a safe, comfortable environment, he missed the thrill of adventuring. Of darting from one place to another to keep himself hidden. Some part of him must have grown accustomed to being in constant danger. "Hey, you want some fruit? I'm hungry," He said, reaching into his bag for an apple or two. The chiryma trilled. [16]

Jewel wasn't sure if the chiryma should've been eating whole apples, but damn, Rosie made it look natural as anything. The entire fruit was crunched up and swallowed quicker than he could take his first bite - at least she was enjoying her food. He'd have more things to worry about if she turned her nose up at it. The apples he'd picked out were a little tart. He enjoyed it; he liked the way it made his face scrunch up as the flavour spread over his tongue. "Hey," He spoke through a mouthful of fruit when he saw someone skulking near a tree. "What're you doing over there?" "I, uh... I... I wanted to watch the meteor, but--" They stammered, and raised a hand to sheepishly scratch their neck. "I don't like people, very much, so..." "Hear you loud and clear. Carry on, buddy," Jewel said, but pointed a warning finger at them. "If you make trouble, though, we'll be back." [17]

That was about the extent of the drama around the camp. Jewel didn't see anyone who was out to make difficulty - only a handful of socially awkward geeks, wanting to be separate from the main group. Made sense. Who would try to mess up a peaceful gathering, anyway? He knew there were some interesting sorts in the city, but it hardly seemed worth their time to cause issues here. The lap was completed, and it was almost time. The camp was abuzz with excitement, and everyone looked to be taking their seats (or at least their positions) - clipboards and telescopes as far as the eye could see. "Oh, there you are! All clear?" The familiar scientist advanced on him with a smile. "Yeah, no issues, just some people wanting to sit away from the crowd," He replied. "Awesome! Feel free to grab a seat. The meteor will be overhead really soon." [18]

Where, exactly, was he going to park himself and his oversized chicken? Jewel hummed under his breath as he scanned around, looking for a decent spot with space for the pair of them to spread out. He'd have to strike out a little further, by the looks of things - the scientists were swarming around the place with their gear, and he didn't want Rosie to knock any over. "Come over this way, Rosie," He said, cocking his head in the direction of the outskirts of the camp. "We'll find something better out this way, I think." The chiryma looked funny when she ran. For some reason, the apple had given her a burst of excitement, and she trotted ahead of him like a child, with Mr. Cheeps dangling from her beak. Thank goodness it wasn't her actual child. He had no idea how she would cope with a baby she couldn't swing around the place. [19]

By some miracle, there was a decent amount of space outside of the immediate camp area. Jewel was grateful to sit himself down on the grass and take a breath; the juices of his half-eaten apple were making his fingers sticky. Rosie paced for a few more moments, her fluffy tail flicking, before bedding down next to him. "Thatta girl," He cooed. The chiryma trilled softly, then stretched out her neck, laying her head in his lap. "Aww, there you go. Let's see what this is all about, shall we?" The meteor was a spectacle, indeed. The fae had never seen anything of its ilk pass that close to the earth, and it was a sight that was worth the labour. More than worth it. He felt he should have done twice the work for the honour of seeing it. He listened to the delighted sounds from the scientists and smiled, stroking over the crest of Rosie's head. [20] [Logged]
