They continued to walk in deeper, moving slowly and as silently as they could. Both of her pets stuck close behind her, trusting their owner to lead them properly. Fanged didn’t feel that she had as much confidence in herself as they did, but her being in the lead was the best decision for them. She stopped suddenly, her eyes catching something strange against the dirt floor. She squinted, taking her flashlight and lowering it to investigate the strange spot further. Casper and Phi both stopped as she did.
“Tracks,” she hissed quietly to them as she tried to convey what she had found.
As she illuminated the tracks with her flashlight, she could see that they were much larger than she could have imagined. She had never seen a fully-grown Sarane in person. As common tournament fighting pets, it shouldn’t be surprising that they were large and fierce. She waited for a moment, listening for any sounds that would indicate the presence of one of these ferocious beasts deeper in the cavern. For now, all remained silent. Taking that to be a good sign, the three of them continued forward. If they wanted to complete the quest, they would have to find the correct Sarane nest.

She felt the thrill of danger jolt through her body as they began their search for the nest. Phi and Casper both waited for her lead, a little leery of the danger themselves. Even though Casper was an ethereal pet, there were still moves that could cause him damage. Additionally, he did not want to see his owner or creature companion injured in battle. They moved slowly, but it didn’t take long until they were at the heart of the cavern. This was the most sheltered area and was ideal to make a den. For now, they were fortunate. The Sarane had clearly left for hunting or some other activity.
She found the nests and Casper slunk ahead to investigate. Phi stayed behind her, wary of the space. Fanged slowed her breath, trying not to make any sound at all as she moved closer to the nests. There were a few of them, appearing to belong to a small family of Sarane. She scanned the nests with a sense of urgency, trying to find the one that contained this mysterious item. Her eyes caught sight of something that looked out of place. She inched closer, trying to get a better look.

There was certainly some sort of object wrapped up in a piece of brightly coloured cloth. It was the only thing that looked out of place to her and was clearly the object she was meant to retrieve. She moved swiftly, striking quickly in order to grab the object with little intrusion. Casper followed close behind ready to defend her back if it became necessary. Phi was their lookout and thankfully, she didn’t have to sound an alarm. Once the object was safely in her hands, Fanged set about making their retreat. They backed out of the cavern, moving slowly in case there was a Sarane lurking close by.
They began to head back to the river retracing their steps through the path they had already taken. Just when she thought they were in the clear, she heard the sound of large, clambering footsteps. If she listened closely enough, she would also hear the pitter patter of tinier footfalls. Fanged felt her blood freeze. Something was coming and from the sound of it, she presumed it was the family that occupied those nests. She needed to do her best to hide her and her creature companions. She made sure Casper and Phi were close to her.

Fanged angled herself to keep her and her pets in the shadows. She had switched off her flashlight, not wanting its illumination to give her position away to this threat. She heard the creature slow and sniff the air curiously as it caught their scent. Blind panic coursed through her veins and she had to steel herself to ignore the feeling and prevent herself from doing something impulsive. The Sarane parent slunk through the cavern, thankfully entering through a different path than they had taken. Both of her pets were frozen as well, though Casper was prepared to fight if he needed to.
Fanged didn’t know how long she stood there, obscured by the darkness. The Sarane lumbered past, disappearing into the darkness of the cave and towards its nest. If it had sensed her, it didn’t appear concerned with her now. Silently she gestured for Casper and Phi to follow as the edged closer to the river. If they followed its path for a while, that should mask their scent and sounds. The trio moved as quietly as possible. The only sound heard was the sound of running water as they followed the river. Eventually, they came across the tunnel that would take them back.

Fanged took a moment to gather herself. She checked that she still had the object in her possession and was relieved to find it securely in her backpack. She hadn’t even remembered placing it in there. She zipped up her backpack and began to prepare her pets for the journey home. She was a bit tempted to reveal what the item was, but she closed her bag before she could do anything the quest giver wouldn’t want done. After all, if they wanted her to know what the item was, they would have explained that already.
“Are you guys ready to go?” she questioned her pets.
Casper and Phi both appeared worn out and ready to head back to the kennel. The journey had been long enough and the added stress of danger had made their expedition that much more exhausting. The three of them were all ready to head back. They had learned a lot for this journey and Fanged was prepared to utilize that knowledge on her next trip down into the mines. For now, they would head back home and take a much-needed rest. Her companions had performed perfectly and she was glad that this quest had gone swimmingly.
