Fiera looked out at the audience as they rumbled, waiting for the show to begin. It was clear that this contest had drawn quite a large crowd- bigger than usual. It was such an unusual type of contest, Fiera couldn’t bring herself to be surprised. Still, it only meant more attention for her and Desiree! Speaking of... the young pixie harachiu had been pretty gung-ho about all of this to start with, but now that she was actually here and seeing the crowd, she was practically burying herself in Fiera’s skirt. “Nervous?” Fiera said quietly. “I think I forgot something at home.” Desiree replied, looking back over her shoulder. “We should go back and get it! Darn, guess we can’t do the-“ “No.” Fiera said gently, nudging the girl in front of her with a foot. “We’ll be fine. You’ve gotten this far! Believe me, they’re expecting far less than what we’ve got in store. Just follow my lead and you’ll be fine, I promise. Now, get ready to follow me!” Fiera finished talking to Desiree and then immediately strutted out into the arena. “Ladies and gentlemen! It’s me, your eternal favorite, Fiera Ferella! And do I have a treat for you tonight! Presenting the greenest of thumbs- Desiree Ferella!” She said, gesturing to where her harachiu stood.

The humanish was dressed in a long, red gown with a single rose in her hair. That was her equivalent to dressing casually, as she wanted her young pixie to take center stage. Desiree was dressed up in a puffy, pastel green dress with a pink tulle skirt, looking much like a small flower herself. Small silk flowers were woven into her curly hair, making her look even more like a little nature sprite. She waved shyly at the audience as the attention was turned on her. “Come over here, dear!” She said. Desiree took a running start and leapt into the air, landing with only a small stumble on Fiera’s hand. “Behold, the harachiu. Already creatures that grow from plants, they’re endlessly helpful in growing more!” She said. Desiree finally found it in her to squeak out a bit of speech herself. “Yeah, uhm! I can help a lot!”
(Desiree displays knowledge of her name, come, fly, and her knowledge of common as a skill.)

“That’s right, ladies and gents, my dear Desiree is quite the talker. And let’s be honest, who wants a less intelligent gardening buddy when you can have one you can speak to instead, eh?” She said. “After all, it’s much easier to simply make a request than to trains trick from the ground up!” She pulled a packet of seeds out of her pocket and handed them to Desiree before throwing an arm up over her head in mock despair. “Oh woe! I simply cannot remember how deep to bury these carrot seeds! And the packet is just too far away to check! If only someone could remind me.” She said, before looking at Desiree. The pixie harachiu paused for a moment before replying. “Oh! Right.” She held up the packet dramatically before reading aloud. “Carrots: bury seeds two inches in soft soil!” Fiera chuckled. “Fantastic, dear.”

“Not to mention, having a spare set of hands always helps in the garden!” She said, dropping some seeds into a tiny satchel before handing it to Desiree. “Desiree dear, could you hold this?” “Yep!” Fantastic, and would you mind dropping them into... these holes I’ve dug? She said, winking to the crowd and setting up some cups on the ground. Desiree held the little bag patiently as she did, until they were all set up in a row. “There we go! Now you drop the seeds in while I water them.” She said. Sure enough, Desiree fluttered over each cup, pulling a seed or two out from the bag and dropping it into the cups as Fiera followed behind with a vial of water, pouring a few drops in as she followed behind. When they were done, Desiree fluttered back up to Fiera’s shoulder. “Drop the bag here, love?” She said, holding out her hand. Desiree obeyed, handing the satchel back.
(Desiree uses hold and drop. Fiera uses the seeds and satchel item, along with the water droplets.)

“Behold, seeding the ground and watering it in half the time with some extra help! But of course, Desiree helps me in the harvesting too, not just the sowing. After all, my garden is... a little disorganized at times, and this old nothin gets its plants mixed up sometimes.” She said, knocking on her skull for emphasis. Then she rustled through her bag again, pulling out another, smaller sack. She dumped it out in front of Desiree, revealing a variety of nuts, berries, grasses and leaves. “Desiree dear, would you mind sorting out the medicinal plants from the plain ones? Oh, and of course the berries that are good to eat from the underripe ones.” Fiera said, checking her nails as if it was no big deal for Desiree to do all that. The harachiu eyed the pile for a minute before giving a little salute. “Sure, miss!” She piped up and got to work. It took her a few minutes, but soon had sorted the various plants into neat piles based on their uses. “And there you have it! The cleverest cookie in the Labs City! Thank you all for coming out to see her- she’s definitely the best one here!” Fiera said with a laugh, waving goodbye before carrying Desiree away, whispering praises in her ear the whole time as the harachiu giggled.

Considering they had gotten to the contest registration at the last possible moment, it didn’t take long after they’d signed up for the day of the show ring to come around. Rhys was in high spirits, ready to show the crowd what he could do. Noa was mostly humoring him, though he was interested to see how things played out, especially if they could earn some nice points in the process. The first ones out on the ring were a cat-eared woman and a… Was that a Harachiu? That caught Noa’s attention. But before he could get a closer look, Rhys knocked over their props with an errant swing of his tail, and by the time the two of them had set it all to rights again, the duo before them were already finished. {Let’s go!} said Rhys, fluttering into the air and doing a quick circle around Noa’s head.

Then he zipped off into the ring, and Noa followed in his wake at a more sedate pace as their first prop, a large flat garden bed on wheels, was rolled out onto the stage in front of them.
“Noa, with Rhys,” Noa said.
There was a pause.
{Come on, Noa, can’t you have a little more enthusiasm?} Rhys sounded half disappointed and half exasperated. Noa simply shrugged.
“You tell them then. Go on.” He waved his hand at Rhys, who sighed but carried on with the introductions, with a great deal more energy than Noa had done.
{Hello everyone! I’m Rhys, and today we’ll be showing you a gardening demonstration! We worked really hard, so I’d appreciate it if you could watch until the end!} He waved his whiskers in the air, fluttering animatedly about.
Noa did have his own part to play, even if he wasn’t terribly enthusiastic about it.

Rhys had drafted him a script, and forced him to practice for the routine, and well, he did want those points, so… Reading off the script he’d penned at Rhys’s behest, Noa said, “Rhys is a great all around gardening companion. He’ll take care of the whole process for you from start to finish. For example, when preparing for planting, he’ll do the digging for you.”
On Noa’s cue, Rhys landed on the garden bed and began digging little holes into the soft soil with his claws. He couldn’t shift a lot of dirt at a time like this, but his small size and quick movements did make him pretty ideal for digging the small holes that some seeds needed. When he was done, he shook off the dirt, then looked to Noa to cue him into reading off the next part of the script.

“Once he’s done with the digging, he can use his telekinesis to drop your seeds in with pinpoint precision. Like so. Hold these,” Noa said, and held out a packet of seeds for Rhys.
Rhys levitated them into the air with his telekinesis, separating them out into individual ones. “Now drop them in,” Noa prompted, and Rhys dropped the seeds one by one into the holes he had just dug, then shoved dirt over them.
With that part done, another flower bed was wheeled onto the stage, this one filled with a variety of plants that were already growing and healthy. “Rhys can even take care of your plants for you. No need to worry about over-watering or using the wrong kind of fertilizer, since he knows exactly what kind of care to give them.” Noa handed him a watering can and the liquid and pellet fertilizers this time, and Rhys went from plant to plant, taking care of them as needed.

It was Rhys himself who narrated what he was doing this time, explaining about the particulars of each plant as he went. {Tomatoes like this one need lots of sun! Oh, but if you live in a really sunny area, some shade in the afternoon is a little better. Bone meal is a good fertilizer choice, but high nitrogen ones will delay the flowers…} And so on, until he had gone down and taken care of each plant in turn.
More plants were wheeled in, from berry bushes to a small pear tree. “Once your garden has some crops, Rhys can pick them for you. He’s got the delicate touch needed to keep your berries uncrushed, and he can fly up to get those hard to reach fruit in the upper branches. No need to tell him what to pick either. You can just ask him to find something to eat, and he’ll bring you something good.”

On Noa’s cue, Rhys fluttered between the bushes, picking berries as he went. He deposited them into a waiting bowl, then flew up to the pear tree and picked the fruit at the top of the miniature pear tree. It wasn’t terribly impressive since the tree itself was only a little taller than Noa, but it wasn’t as if they could have gotten in a larger, more mature fruit tree into the contest hall, and it got the point across.
Rhys returned to Noa with the pear, which Noa set aside. Together, the two of them made their way over to a counter arranged with a variety of different mushrooms, some of them colorful and others quite plain. Turning to face the audience once more, Noa carried on. “And he can even tell the difference between toxic and edible plants. Which ones are good to eat, Rhys?”

{Glad you asked, Noa!} Rhys was laying it on real thick, Noa thought, but he was having fun, and this whole contest ordeal was really for him, so Noa simply went along with it.
Rhys hopped onto the counter and began inspecting the different mushrooms. {This white variety’s got a nice mild flavor, and they grow best in dank caverns! Look for that pale color, and the shape of their cap! Oh, but this kind is no good to eat. The bright green underside should be a pretty good warning…}
“No good to eat, huh?” Noa said, arching a brow. “Are you sure?” He picked up the offending mushroom in question, broke off a piece of the cap, then popped it into his mouth.
{Wha--- Hey!} They hadn’t rehearsed this part, but Noa thought it might be fun to do - a nice way to showcase a different skill of Rhys’s.

The mushroom worked fast, and Noa was already beginning to feel his muscles seize, but Rhys glowered at him, dancing lights blinking into existence around Noa’s body, and the sensation faded away.
“You see that, folks? Even if you eat the wrong thing, Rhys can fix you up,” Noa said, grinning and unrepentant.
Rhys looked as if he had something he would have liked to say, but for the sake of carrying on with the show, he held his tongue, metaphorically speaking, for the moment.
“And if you find your garden assailed by pests,” Noa said, “Rhys can screech at them to scare them off.” A corn crow was released onto the stage, and it made a beeline for the bowl of berries. Noa clapped his hands over his ears in preparation for what was to come, while Rhys let out an ear-piercing screech, which stopped it dead in its tracks.

“And if that isn’t enough to send them packing, he can chase them off a little more aggressively.” Noa gave Rhys the signal to buffet the pocketpet with his wings, and Rhys zipped off to do just that. The pocketpet, clearly overmatched, flew away cawing an alarm.
One last bed of plants was wheeled in, all the specimen on it in a sorry-looking state. “And if you find that pests have already gotten into your garden and done some damage, not to worry. Rhys can fix that too.” Noa gave another series of commands, and Rhys set to work, concentrating on the broken plants on the last bed. New growth took over, spreading at a rapid rate, until the plants looked more or less recovered from the damage they had sustained. Another few moments of concentration passed, and several of them even broke out into full bloom, rather dramatically at that.
(Rhys demonstrates Wing Buff, Verdant Growth and Rapid Bloom)
