Up until this point, it had been going more or less as Briar had come to expect these things to go. He wasn't a regular at the breeding center, but a few of his Houluh had a litter or two to their name by now, and he'd accompanied them here each time to... facilitate that. Once he had even suffered to come here with Noa, and it had forced him to be glad for every other occasion, when his company had been more pleasant. He didn't like meeting people, but anything was more pleasant than being stuck with Noa.
However, he hadn't expected Kadin to walk in and just... sit down in the room. Was this not the point where they simply left the Houluh there to get on with the natural process? He lingered at the door, looking in uncertainly. Did Kadin... want to stay to watch it happen...?

So, Kadin sat down in the room and watched Dodge run around being her crazy self. He looked over to Briar's houluh, too, to see if he was doing anything about the toys, but that was when Kadin noticed that Briar wasn't in the room. Instead, he was sort of just standing awkwardly by the door, looking at him like he was doing something completely out of the ordinary. Confused, Kadin got up and went over so when he asked about it, it would be easier to read whatever Briar ended up writing on the paper because this, unfortunately, would probably not be an easy yes or no question.
"What's wrong?" Kadin glanced back, everything seemed to be pretty normal in the room from what he could see. He couldn't see anything out of the ordinary, anyway, that might keep someone out while letting their houluh go in to the room. He had no clue what the problem was.

It wasn't as if Kadin approached him quickly, so Briar had enough forewarning to brace himself against the flinch reflex as Kadin drew close. He managed it, though he still had to think about it -- just as he had to think about writing, if he wanted his letters to be legible. Kadin's question quickly made it clear that he didn't see anything strange about what he was doing. Maybe it wasn't. It wasn't as if Briar had any formal background in animal husbandry; even Joker had been a stray that he'd found and taken in.
He made several abortive attempts at writing something, only to scribble it out again. Eventually, he penned a single question. -Are we supposed to watch them?- It wasn't what he was used to, but maybe Kadin knew something he didn't, and he didn't want to come across as belligerent, for a whole host of reasons.

Kadin simply waited while Briar figured out what he wanted to say or not. The houluh were playing in the background and Kadin didn't hear anything particularly worrisome back there, so he didn't really pay them any mind. Instead he just. Waited. Still not really sure what had been wrong before to get Briar to have that look on his face. Once he was offered the message, he read it quickly and sort of shrugged. He was a bit confused by the question, to be honest?
"Uh, most people I've come here with stay in the room just to make sure they're getting along. They don't watch them the whole time. I figured that's what everyone did, just in case a fight happened?" Which probably wasn't a huge problem for houluh, but he'd probably still feel more comfortable keeping an ear out than he would finding out afterwards that there'd been a fight.

Kadin seemed just as confused as Briar was, so it was hard for Briar to gauge what, if anything, he ought to... do. Or say. He could have explained further, but he wasn't really eager to write more if he didn't have to, since it still took some effort for him to do so.
His goal in all this was simply to get through it without fuss, so... He simply wrote, -okay-, and left it at that. It wasn't what he was used to, but thinking on it, Loki was probably the least friendly of the Houluh in his care, and the one that was trained to bite if need be, on command. Briar wondered if Kadin knew something of Loki from his record in the Salonnes -- not that he had acted out, but that his champion ribbon came from the strength show.
If that was the case, then maybe it wasn't so strange that Kadin wanted to keep an eye on them.

Well, it seemed like whatever misunderstanding they'd had wasn't that big a deal. Kadin had a feeling that there was more Briar wasn't saying, but he wasn't going to push about it. He simply nodded and went back to minding his own business, just sort of keeping an ear out for if anything was going on with the houluh. Dodge was incredibly friendly so he didn't have any big worries about anything happening, but as someone who'd been working with sarane for so long, he tended towards caution other than actually. Just letting his pets to whatever. Hopefully this would be all over with sooner rather than later, at least, this standing around and waiting part was always the most awkward of it. Kadin didn't really get why he kept doing it when it was do annoying, but at least at the end they'd all go home with puppies. So here they were.
