The next orbaru breeding that Renathan had wanted to do was an idea with blue orbaru that he had, but seeing as he wanted a male or two from that breeding and the fact that they were quite rare meant that he'd need to go to the Nature's Bounty to grab some more of those male berries. He just didn't have any time to go out to do any shopping, and so far every tiny bit of time that he had to carve out of his day had been spent doing necessary tasks at the farm. The next time he had any time during his day to do anything other than the necessities, he decided he'd do another orbaru breeding as opposed to stopping by the stores. He did want to breed his favorite orbaru, Mars. He already had a particular female orbaru in mind when he went to go pick the orbaru up after doing the spell that would allow him to stay away from Auburn for a small amount of time. He had a particularly pretty orbaru with a spotty saddle named Silver Maple that he figured would make pretty brown and grey offspring with the rather chocolate-y colored Mars.[1]

Silver Maple was most definitely one of Renathan's favorite orbaru ever. She had a very dilute-looking coat. Though there was absolutely no way that orbaru had similar genetics to most animals (at least Renathan didn't think so, with his own limited knowledge on the subject from basic schooling in his homeland) what with their technicolor coats, Silver Maple looked like she could pass for a common animal. She had subdued blue eyes, and a particolored coat that looked almost like smoke in some areas. Renathan often thought about how much he adored the way that she and her direct sister came out. She was the perfect match to his beloved Mars. Mars looked more like a traditional orbaru, with his tell-tale tail stripes. However, his colors were quite subdued as well, nearly natural-esque though not quite... Renathan was sure that the pair would make the most adorable looking offspring ever. He scooped up both orbaru quite quickly- he had some time to take these two to the breeding center early on this saturday morning, but he didn't have any time past lunch since he had a business-related meeting he had to make after lunch. So he didn't have all the time in the world to dilly-dally. [2]

It always seemed like Renathan was running, running, running. It was farm-related work early in the morning, and then of course he was off to 'real work'. Most of the week he didn't have a day off. Most of his 'days off' weren't even really days off, since he often wound up at work anyway working on overtime work. As soon as it was time to come home, he often found himself doing most of the farm chores until dusk, and then it was time for sleep so that he could do it all again... He didn't have much time to do anything. Even today, he was working on borrowed time. Perhaps getting more creatures was a bad idea when he scarcely had time to do anything- but it was what made him happy in general (even on days where he felt like giving up and it felt like the whole world was against him- it was impossible to always have a happy mood).
He was a little bit on the down-in-the-dumps side of the equation on the particular morning he took Mars and Silver Maple to the Breeding Center. Sometimes it seemed like things would never be okay again- and on those days he tried to carve out some time to do something that he at least used to enjoy.

April was a month for showers, and according to Pethian proverb it meant that May would bring Flowers. It was certainly true for the mansion (which Renathan never had time to go exploring anymore, which was mostly fine because that tended to be a 'him and Shy Guy thing' and Shy Guy had a much better home without him and his stupid mess now) and the mammalian tried to hope that it was also true metaphorically as he carried the covered animal carriers to the Breeding Center. Mars sat in the one he held in his left hand- and true to form he was lazily watching all of the rain fall through the bars of the front of the cage and behind the covering of a towel. Silver Maple kept sticking her little paw through the grates in an attempt to catch all of the rain drops. Silver Maple always seemed to be in such good spirits... Renathan was glad for that at least. Neither of the Orbaru seemed bothered by the rain. Perhaps anyone else would have worn something more rain-proof than Renathan's usual shawl and waist sash combo, but not Renathan. He didn't feel like he deserved to stay out of the rain, today.

When it rains, it pours. That was another adage that Renathan became aware of since his time in Pethia... It seemed to be quite true as well. It seemed like whenever one bad thing happened, a bunch of bad things followed or happened at nearly the same time. He felt like he'd received a flurry of blows and hadn't the time to recoil and recuperate before being attacked again. Life was really like that sometimes. However, he also felt incredibly lonely and isolated often, and like his problems could all be fixed if he just gave up and decided to drop most of his hobbies to only take on the things he really only had to do. However, he also felt like that wasn't really an option in actuality, either. He'd spent so much time on his hobbies, and even if all of it was his own doing- why should he have to give them up? He'd already given Shy Guy up, so why should he also give up orbaru breeding?
Just having Mars and Silver Maple with him at the moment was giving him a little bit of a mood boost. Though this trip was only going to be a short part at the start of this undoubtedly long day.

Perhaps, Renathan should not have taken on all of the extra work that he had. He had hoped to make a life here in Pethia, complete with his own jewelry shop (his ideas were so small then!) and his own farm of creatures that would help him greet the day... He hadn't thought about returning to his homeland during that time. These days, the thought came up every now and again. He had mostly migrated to Pethia in order to find his soulbond (since he'd had the calling), but now... He didn't want to burden Mintaka with the weird feelings that he was dealing with- all of the strange disembodied tiredness and the sensation of being isolated even though he'd made a life for himself. Pethia was nothing like his homeland, and though he did love certain things about it, he found that he missed the not-home from before that he'd never really given a chance to become a home. Perhaps if he'd stayed for a few years past his age of majority, he would have felt more at home?
Did he regret moving to Pethia? He wasn't really sure. Just when he was feeling really soaked about halfway to the Breeding Center and like things wouldn't get better, he noticed that Mars was playing with his tail orb, and something about it looked really funny to him.

Renathan lets one of those soft little 'chuckles' that were scarcely more than breath pushed forcefully through his nostrils at the slightly funny sight, and then it sort of cracks him right then that he probably wasn't doing okay. Most people would probably state something particularly poignant about the journey being worth more than the destination, or something about all of the 'people' he met along the way. Really he didn't ultimately find a whole lot of people that wound up meaning a lot to him in the long run. He did make several long-standing friends that he occasionally went to do things with- and of course he had worked with quite a few journeymen over the years that he still kept in contact with, but he didn't feel comfortable making long term relationships with anyone so such sentiments were not applicable to him. He did enjoy doing things alone, but he often felt like he didn't have anyone to speak with about issues that he had either. Would he even talk about his issues with anyone if he had the chance? Probably not. He felt like others would simply attack him for his various weaknesses... It happened often enough. He pushes the thought from his mind before it has the chance to hurt him again as he reaches down with an elbow to open one of the doors to the Breeding Center. Silver Maple murmured quietly as she readjusted to the change in how her critter crate was being held.

Renathan had not at all noticed when he had gotten to the Breeding Center. He felt like he was running off of autopilot, and the only thing to snap him out of it was the harsh half plop-half slap of the rainwater that drained out of the gutter on the side of the building. It was funneled to a small position right beside the door and where it hit the ground was a small washed out spot that looked almost like a harsh but teeny dish of mud. The rain had been falling so hard that it was running off of the gutter in a practical drove and was striking that spot so harshly that it frothed up the muddy soup into broad off-white bubbles. Renathan found himself staring at it, having sort of zoned out as the doors to the Breeding Center slid open. He pushes himself inside and just stands in the little room between the outside doors and the doors to the inside. He let the water run off of his fur onto the little rug there, and he also sloughed off the towels from the tops of the critter carriers that held the two orbaru so that they would dry on the provided rack over the grate. He was always very grateful that the entire Labs City was designed with critters in mind.

Renathan had never taken any critters that were dirty to the Breeding Center before, but he knew how difficult it was to keep creatures that liked to play in the mud from getting doused if they really wanted to. These grates were provided with little faucets and fresh towels to make sure that creatures were doing well enough to be allowed in the main part of the building first. On days like today, Renathan really appreciated the service that he hardly ever used. He checked inside of the critter carriers to make sure that his orbaru were safe and dry- and just like he'd been trying to make sure of they were safe and sound without being even slightly damp. He was anything if not strongly in the 'I take good care of my critters' camp. He opens the second door after drying off the few raindrops that had accumulated on the bottom of the critter carriers with a fresh towel. Sure, Renathan looked like a drowned cat, but the orbaru were as soft and warm as ever. He was glad that there wasn't anyone in the waiting room to stare at him, since he knew that he looked absolutely horrid all soaked.

Though there was no one there to stare at him on the customer side, there were a couple of Breeding Center staffers that were standing nearby the assistant at the front desk that did notice and gawk at him for just a moment before they disperse. Renathan feels guilty. He knows that he probably should have grabbed a towel for himself on the way in but he did feel partially like he sort of deserved to look like a drowned rat. He did plan this on a rather rainy morning, though he also hadn't listened to the radio this week to listen for a broadcast on what to expect. Still, he does find that he is able to do the paperwork quite quickly with his pretty chill looking orbaru sitting comfortably in their critter crates as they sat on the tile once he put them down to be able to work on that paperwork. By the time he has the paperwork finished up (he didn't do a lot of talking on this particularly funky feeling day) one of the staffers was already waiting to bring him to a room for his orbaru. He was quite thankful to see a towel sitting on the chair in the room once he sat the critter carriers on the tile again.

Renathan had to admit, it was perhaps not his best moment deciding to come here whenever there was so much rain out. However, he knew that he'd feel at least a little better after toweling his fur off- so he sits the orbaru carriers down and unlatches the doors to the cages to allow them out. It didn't take very long for Silver Maple to come running up out of the carrier. She tended to be quite calm and collected whenever being handled (a lot of orbaru tended to be placid when being handled, from Renathan's experience with the creatures), but she was a practically monstrous force of playfulness whenever she had the chance to be. Silver Maple didn't even go straight towards Mars, even though she'd been aware of him and they'd been having what Renathan would jokingly refer to as a 'conversation' of mostly boops between them while he had been traveling to the Breeding Center. She races towards the fluffy carpet towards the middle of the room, and then she makes a wide arc of a race out of it as she makes another loop. She leaps over a large ball during the circuit, and nearly crashes into a soft playhouse.

Silver Maple was anything if not deft; it was quite common for Bubbly orbaru to be rather agile. She managed not to run into anything (though she made several VERY close calls during the process of tearing through the room), and Renathan didn't really have the heart to try to stop her. The russet mammalian moves to the nearby chair with the towel in it and he picks the towel up. It unfolds in his hand as he moves to take off his mask with the other one. He places his mask on the table and then goes to bring the fluffy and dry towel first to his cheek fluff and then between his antlers and ears. He then dries off his braids the best that he can, and moves to run the towel over his arms. He works from top to bottom to dry himself off the best that he can, and then he places the towel into the plastic container for soiled bits and bobs. He had hardly ever taken notice of any of these things before too much -since his creatures rarely soiled anything in the rooms- but he was quite thankful for them all the same. Mars lazily laid in his crate, not quite ready to come out.

Silver Maple doesn't seem to tire very quickly at all. She was full of energy and had been in the crate for long enough! Renathan sits down in the plastic chair near the door and watches Silver Maple as he stretches his shoulders back out. He still wasn't feeling very good. There was a sense of general malaise about everything, he felt. It was just one of those days, he decided. He nearly forgets to put his mask back on, since he had never been walked in on once he was in an orbaru breeding room he hadn't been feeling that 'oh I'm not decent' sensation that he would normally be worried about in public. He situates the mask back on his face, and in the process takes his eyes off of the ever excitable Silver Maple. When he opens his eyes back up, he is surprised to see that Silver Maple had apparently decided that she was done running about the room (for now) and was much more interested in Mars. Mars was watching her with mild interest, but seemed much too lazy to actually get up and sniff at her. Silver Maple seemed content to sit a bit away from him, for now.

Renathan knew that eventually, the two would probably find some sort of game to play together. That was usually what happened whenever Orbaru were around each other for very long. They'd already been booping at one another earlier, so he was sure that they were going to make fast friends. He generally could tell when Orbaru weren't going to get along as well as others would, and he was sure that despite Silver Maple being very excitable that she and Mars would get along swimmingly. Mars was generally very lax in nature, like most sloth orbaru. However, he also was quite focused on tasks- something that made him a little more likely to get up once he decided on some kind of a path of action that he wanted to take. Renathan was sure that due to these proclivities, that Mars would most likely get up and play relatively soon. He hoped quite soon, since he didn't have all day to watch the two orbaru play... He did wish that he did have that time. He was beginning to feel very worn down with his rather fast paced life, he was beginning to realize. He needed to have some time to himself.
