It had been a few months since she had come back to the pit, and she found that she almost had missed being there. Sure, there were the rare breakings and sarane gauntlet fights one could pay to watch, but there was only so many times one could watch a mage force a sarane to its knees in seconds, or some special drake drive their common opponent to the ground with a single hit. The boss fight had been a bit more exciting than that, for all her panic at trying the fight solo. Now someone had taken her up on her not quite a waste of credits newspaper ad, someone to fight a great big scaly bat with, and the thought of having someone else to fight next to was a massive relief.
That didn’t mean the butterflies were any less furious as they brewed a tornado within her, nor had she shied away from checking out her balgor one last time before separating from them. Even now, she drummed her fingers on the rail as her three balgor entered closely together, watching them as they were watching the far side of the arena, knowing full well what was waiting for them. Well, at least Farida and Hektor were watching the rest of the arena, shoulders nearly touching. Balboa, whether out of the memory of being ensnared by one of Hektor’s vine attacks or just feeling a bit jumpy without a single tree or stone for cover, stayed behind the other two and watched the nearer gate. Alma's fingers halted their beat to curl into a fist as she considered whether or not Balboa would try to escape when their allies were sent in.

> Xentus, accompanied by Mashiik and Sequinn.
It had been quite some time, hadn't it? The man couldn't remember when he’d last attempted to challenge one of the famed pit bosses... Between caring for the menagerie and his field work, he'd found that he had little time to return and engage in such contests as this. But of course when word reached his ears about the new prizes the stadium had to offer, he’d suddenly found his schedule freed up. Fancy how that worked. While guilt did threaten to eat at his mind, it was far more occupied with the battle to come. This was the first time he would get to see his prized alurook in combat, and the first he'd get to see the tiny faeron be more than just live bait. And, having answered the call for aid seen in the morning paper, he'd have the company of a fellow trainer and their creatures to team with. Mashiik and Sequinn were left to enter the arena. The small dragon was eager to be somewhere fun, being familiar with the chaos of fights (and the strange, aggressive attention she garnered from her opponents for some reason). The owl was far less than thrilled on the other hand, nagging mentally to the man once he was out of earshot from her disgruntled chirps.
“Greetings - Miss Grimm, yes? It is a pleasure to be joining you today. This one hopes he is not late”, Xentus's voice came politely and friendly as found his partner already at the stands when he arrived. He hid a mix of anticipation and nervousness behind a friendly smile and offered his hand forward to shake.

The Wiurn stretched out his neck and wings and glowered at the ones invading his space. Flicking his wingtips back, he bugled a warning, this would not stand!

Alma grinned as she stepped forward and slapped her gloved hand into his, giving it a few vigorous shakes if he let her. “An’ I take it you’re Xentus. Pleased to have a face tah go with the name.” And a chest and abs to go with it. Lucky bastard. She let go and stepped back, half turning as she jerked a thumb in the direction of the arena. “And nah, you’re on time. We’ve been here for maybe a couple of minutes-” And then the wiurn was making his challenge heard, and Alma flung herself at the rail, latching on as though it was going to run away. Quickly, she said, “Ah, justa quick warning. If you hear me yell something about ‘growth’, keep yer beasts back from the big’un for a moment. Hektor ain’t got the best aim.” The words ran together, and some of it might have been drowned out by the noise, but there was no time to say more.
Balboa watched the pair as they entered, ears pinning flat against her skull as a rumble built in her chest and her eyes flitted from the giant golden bird to the tiny light. Farida turned her head to look at the newcomers, then grunted and nipped at Balboa’s leg, turning back to face the other part of the arena as the miasma spat and turned away from the newcomers with one last glare. They were forgotten a heartbeat later she saw the great blue thing, a blue-scaled monster, and her sisters slid smoothly aside as she moved to stand between them.
“Hektor, Balboa, Farida!” She’d have them start with something simple, test out what they could do against the wiurn and make sure they knew to target the blue reptile. There would be time to call out the other practiced commands later. She jabbed a finger at the wiurn, yelling “Crunch!”
At least one of them must have seen her, or else the balgor had already decided he was the actual threat, because all three of them bounded forward with rumbled challenges that rolled over one another like falling boulders, splitting apart just as they reached the wiurn to try to snap at different limbs.

The leopard's pleasant smile widened into a fanged grin at the energy Alma put forward in the shakes, hoping to reflect a bit of that kind of enthusiasm himself. The excitement he bared upfront was muted, though the feel of thrill still quickened his heart. He trailed after the woman to the rail at the sound of the trumpeting wiurn, and hummed an affirmative from his throat at the quick warning before tuning his attention more closely to the arena. Down below, his mismatched pair seemed mildly offended by the balgor, or at least that one. It didn't seem friendly. Mashiik was informed they were their allies, and quickly pressed back to her keeper that she needed no aid from such heathens. After a short, silent bicker back and forth through the ribbon, the alurook relented and begrudgingly accepted. The faeron was wide-eyed and curious, wanting to play with the strange tusked cats more than anything. But soon enough, the true target here revealed itself. A big blue wiurn. Neither the faeron nor the alurook were off put by the scaly beast - they were far too used to them at home.
'Take flight, Mashi', the man commanded the golden owl through thought, then directed the tiny dragon aloud, "Quinn, strike!" On cue, his creatures acted. Mashiik spread her wings to launch into the air, and Sequinn scampered forward to attack the wiurn's shadow. He figured he'd keep the fae-dragon grounded as an easier target for the beast while the alurook had safety in the air. High hopes were pinned on the wiurn falling swiftly and the tiny glowing dragon acting as live bait and making it through this in one piece.

Hektor’s jaws snapped shut on air as she raced past the target, but her sisters crunched down on scales and flesh with as much force as their jaws could do so. They ran after her, blood on their teeth while hers remained bare, a pink tongue flicking out of Farida’s mouth to dab at the bloody spots on her muzzle. Hektor mirrored the motion as the three balgor turned and slid to a stop, still rumbling a challenge at the winged thing. There was another winged thing behind it, seeming just as large but this one golden, and it launched itself into the air. Balboa’s eyes lingered on it, then the prey was doing the same thing, rising out of reach. The three balgor watched the flyers, tense and rumbling, but Balboa noticed the little thing, the glowing one as it scurried across the ground. She dismissed it a moment later, looking back up into the air. Something seemed wrong with the wiurn for a moment, it’s flight off, and the three balgor looked from it to the golden bird and back.
“Fuck.” Of course the wiurn was going to start flying, that was likely why her newspaper partner had brought a pair of creatures that had wings. The flappy limbs that let things fly. And Alma had brought balgor, a trio of creatures without a single attack that could hit something above them, one of which did not even have the trademark fluff that gave the species an illusion of being winged. Sure, Hektor could summon a stream of plants to tangle and snare a target standing farther away, but the wiurn was not standing, he was flying. And if she tried to use it when he came closer to the ground to launch an attack, it would likely trap whichever creature he swooped at with him.
Alma fought the urge to mash her hand into her face, keeping both sets of fingers wrapped around the balustrade. But Xentus’s alurook was already taking to the skies before the wiurn had begun to flap, and the faeron, well, she wasn’t sure what the command had meant. She had expected something a bit more from a command to strike beyond it running to a seemingly random part of the arena. Perhaps he was trying to be polite, to not show her balgor, and their mostly ineffectual attack, up.
The best they could hope for was to lunge after him when he neared the ground, ripping away more bloody chunks before he broke free and soared out of reach again. If they could keep doing that, they might even appear to hurt it. With no more time to consider it, Alma yelled out, “Hektorbalboafarida,” the three balgor’s names running together as she tried to get the words out before the wiurn attacked, “crunch!” She paused for a moment, holding the pose of one finger pointing at the wiurn, then resumed her grip on the rail. She then said in a light, conversational tone, likely after whatever Xentus yelled out for his ribbonless beast, “Mine can’t hit him up there. Hope he drops a bit.” As though she was chatting about some fresh produce at the stall with a fellow customer rather than admitting how woefully unprepared she was as she drummed her fingers on the rail. She didn’t look away from the fight, as much to will the wiurn to suddenly forget how to fly as to avoid looking Xentus in the eye, or see the grin wiped from his face. Gods, she really hoped the damned thing would get in range soon.
The balgor didn’t feel the regret of their owner as they chased the wiurn, the bird and the glowing vermin deliberately ignored as they ran, no pit of frustration brewing in their stomachs at not having some way to hit or bring down the flying prey. They traded positions and flowed as they went, both trying to be ready to break apart should the beast descend upon them, and to punish the wiurn wherever it did so with their fangs.

There was a lot of motion to watch between the six creatures in the fight. Xentus watched keenly, his eyes flicking about as the action unfurled. The snapping jaws of the balgor trio seemed rather effective despite the tough scales of the wiurn, despite one miss, they seemed to deal a good bit of damage to the lizard. Then it flew. That wasn't quite ideal, though not entirely unexpected. A winged beast would use everything to its advantage, after all. The balgor were firmly grounded. Mashiik and Sequinn were capable of catching up with the wiurn in the air thankfully - Mashiik had taken the lead in this regard.
'Feel the fire and wind. Kveyk', Xentus told soothingly to the alurook. A pang of worry twisted his heart briefly, but he steeled himself with a sharp exhale. This would be the first time he'd see the bird use magic against something living. It was fine. He refocused. "Fire, Quinn!", the leopard called out to the faeron, then flicked his ear toward Alma. Her words reflected the very notion he'd thought of just moments ago. "This one hopes so too. He will see if Mashi or Quinn can't do anything about that", he replied reassuringly as he glanced at the woman, still baring his teeth in a grin.
Now in the air with the wiurn, the golden owl felt exhilarated. (I've got this), she cooed to her keeper, then fired bundled lightning from her beak. And as if perfectly timed, the tiny faeron burst with light.

Xentus winced at the powerful flash of light and lightning. Even from his place in the stands, the sudden brightness nearly seared his eyes. 'Agh!', the voice of the owl yelped in his mind, filled with distress. (Mashi! Keep cal-), he began frantically but was cut off by screeching both mentally and audibly. She was lost in the storm again. The alurook began flying erratically, avoiding the falling trees in the raging wind of her imagined plight. It would take some time to calm her. Xentus grit his teeth, his grin turning to a grimace. He fought against her cries through their link, nothing else mattered more for that brief moment.
"Grr.." The low growl of frustration escaped his throat, followed by a sigh. "Apologies Miss Alma, perhaps that flash was a bit too much..", he muttered quietly and quickly to his partner. He might've bought some small amount of time for them - the wiurn was disoriented by the sudden light too after all, but with allied combatants afflicted as well, he wasn't sure how well then returned his focus back to the battle, "Quinn, take flight!"
[Mashiik skips? If not, Mashiik uses Magic - Lightning Bolt. Sequinn uses Fly](Notes: Should Diurnal Spirit negate Flash? Also, Sequinn should have 14 heath, as she has taken only 1 acid damage out of her 15 total apparently? Additionally/alternatively, should she take no damage here and have the poison take effect at the bottom of calculations where it does 3 damage instead? This calculation for reference, and another example here)

Alma let out a surprised, “Ha” at the lightning erupting from the alurook’s beak, half expecting the wiurn to plummet to the ground. He did not. The wiurn came down low, yes, but he was in control, flying low enough to stab his tailblade at, possibly into, the tiny faeron, but Alma’s attention was focused on the three lunging balgor weaving and lunging for the wiurn’s tail, none dissuaded from their target by the crack of thunder. Hektor missed, again, her jaws snapping on thin air as she missed the slender tail. Fuck, Alma snarled inside her head as her teeth were gritted too tightly to let out more than a grunt. Balboa fared much better, crunching down onto scales, and Farida leapt to strike from the side Hektor had missed. The temblor balgor bit down, adding to the blood staining her muzzle.
And then the wiurn added more red to her hide.
Farida roared as the claws tore into her back before she could retreat, staggering after her sisters as a brief splash of blood sprayed into the air. They ran to meet her, Balboa running slightly past her to rumble and snarl at the thing that had harmed her pack-mate, glancing down for an instant at the nearby glowing faeron.
Balboa yowled as she reared back from the bright light, front legs clawing the air as though she could rend the light stinging her eyes, twisting aside and slamming her paws onto the ground. Farida and Hektor fared better despite the blood staining the former’s fur, their sister’s form silhouetted by the light for an instant as she blocked them from the worst of it, leaving them to blink and shake their heads with complaining grunts of their own. They brushed against the blinded Balboa, rumbling as they did so, the body of the miasma balgor stilling though her head twisted one way and then the other, trying to track the source of the screech above her.
Alma hadn’t the bulk of a balgor to protect her eyes from the flash, but the distance and fact that her gaze had been directed at the bloodied claws of the wiurn let her recover quickly, rubbing a fist into her eyes to encourage the white after-image to fade faster. Her dignity took a bit longer to return, some unthought of connection between the flash of lightning and the flash of light having sent her ducking behind the railing. Pulling herself back up, she was able to watch as the alurook juked through the air, Balboa pawing at her own eyes while rumbling at an unoccupied part of the arena, the temblor-turning-crimson balgor snarling defiance at the thing that had opened up deep red furrows along her back, and the seemingly useless Hektor who stood slightly closer to the flying wiurn as though she could protect the other two.
“Hah, just a bit.” Alma said with the relief of one not waking up in one of the pit healer’s cots. Then he was issuing his command to the living flash bomb, and she was looking to her own beasts.
Later, she would have time to feel sick, to feel bad about the brutal wounds on Farida’s back. Or at least time enough to convince her that she should. But now, now there was no time to do more than look at the balgor and give a new command before the wiurn swept down and killed them all.
With Balboa snapping at empty air, she did not dare risk giving a command to the miasma balgor, fearing that she might find an ally between her jaws. With the acidic drool leaking from said jaws, she doubted anything less than the thick scales on the wiurn would be able to shrug off such an attack. Farida was bleeding, the cuts too long and wide even at this distance, but she was still standing, and Hektor, well, she was as pristine as though this were a contest hall show rather than a fight. “Hektor, crunch! Farida, crunch!” The words were loud, fast, and carefully enunciated, and the two balgor left the blinded one with only a beat of hesitation, Farida lagging a step behind the Hektor. Now, if Hektor could just hit the wiurn…
