They followed the tunnel until it opened up into a new cavern. This area was a lot smaller than the ravine had been, but it appeared large enough that a Sarane could fit here. Accalia trotted forward, having less caution than the girl did. Faye stayed close to Leafy, wanting to first take a look around the area before approaching. The cavern was a lot lighter than the tunnel had been. Leafy would have switched her flashlight off if she hadn’t needed it to look for clues. She shone the flashlight along the ground, searching for Sarane tracks. Faye helped her search, though Leafy was unsure if the Maluzik even knew what they were looking for.
“I think there might be something here,” she whispered, not wanting to startle any Sarane.
She leaned closer, holding the flashlight steady as she searched the ground. There were definitely footprints in the dirt, but Leafy couldn’t tell what they were from. They might have been claws, but her knowledge didn’t extend far enough to identify them specifically.
“Maybe we should follow them?” she suggested.
Faye stuck close as the girl began to follow the path the tracks laid out. Accalia had already headed down the path.

The tracks took them into a protected area of the cavern. There was an enclave that was covered in a thick layer of vines and surrounded by rocks. Leafy might not have paid any attention to it if it wasn’t for the fact that both of her pets had made a beeline straight for it. Whatever they had scented, it was definitely coming from here. As she got closer, she recognized the makings of a nest. In order to verify if it was the right one, she would need to climb into it. Accalia hopped in with little regard for danger. Perhaps she already knew if it was safe.
“Okay we get in, retrieve the item, and get out,” she warned her pets.
Faye didn’t dare enter the nest. Instead she elected to keep watch. At least that was what Leafy assumed she was doing. The nest appeared empty, but Leafy couldn’t tell if a sarane still lived here or if it was long abandoned. She spotted the object with a little bit of digging. It was wrapped up in newspaper, presumably to keep it safe. Not caring enough to snoop, she placed the object carefully into her backpack and hopped out of the nest.
“Mission success! It’s time to get out of here!” she told her pets.
