While Imogen was enraptured with climbing the shelf, Fanged took the opportunity to explore the rest of the room. Usually the libraries in mystery novels were attached to a secret passageway. Perhaps this one would be no different. She took a moment to think, if this were the case, one of the books would double as a secret lever. She would need to figure out which one. Brute forcing it would take a long time considering there were a seemingly endless number of books located in the room. She kept an eye on Imogen as she scanned the rest of the book titles in the immediate vicinity. She tried to look for patterns, or any books that differed from the rest. She had an inkling that she had a lead here. The mansion wouldn’t give her a library and then fail to put a secret passage in! She was certain she was on the right track.

There were a few books that immediately stood out to her. There was one that had a rainbow cover and Fanged decided she would investigate that one first. Imogen glanced over at her, turning back to her task at hand when she realized that the woman wasn’t about to wander too far.
“Yeah, I’m just going to take a look at that book.” Fanged pointed out the rainbow book to the Rakai.
Imogen turned her gaze towards the book, when she saw the woman walking towards it, she realized that was the target. Losing interest in the book, she stuck her front paws up onto the shelf above her and hauled herself up. It was slow progress, but the Rakai was managing to make her way up the bookcase.
“How to Catch a Rainbow,” Fanged read aloud.
It seemed like a rather strange concept. Rainbows were after all, made of refracted white light.

A red howler and a red leaf? Weird.

Before she could get enraptured with the book, a small pocket pet darted across the ground. It didn’t take her too long to catch and once she had, she returned to the book. As she opened the cover, a strange, red leaf fluttered out.
“Well this room is certainly full of surprises,” she commented.
Imogen glanced at her, losing interest quickly, however. She returned to her task of trying to scale the shelves. Fanged skimmed the book, trying to see if there was any info she could use. The whole story seemed like pure nonsense. It was almost like a children’s book, detailing how to capture the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Only this book was detailing how you would capture the rainbow itself. It was implausible at best. But that implausibility could potentially be a clue. She shook the book, trying to see if any of the pages were loose.

As she hoped for, a page broke free from the book and fluttered to the ground. She grabbed it quickly and held it up to the light. The paper had writing on it that was only visible underneath the glow of a strong light.
“Find the book that speaks of ghosts,” she read aloud.
The library was quite large. Finding a specific book was going to be rather difficult. She stepped over towards Imogen, wondering if the Rakai had found anything. She couldn’t expect the creature to find the correct book, considering she couldn’t read, but she might have found something else. Imogen had managed to get higher on the shelf. She batted at the different books, knocking a couple over to make more space for herself. Fanged picked up the discarded books, hoping that luck would allow her to find the right one. After reading the titles, she saw that none were about ghosts.

Imogen glanced at her, suddenly interested in the books she had discarded now that Fanged was also interested in them. She rolled her eyes at the tiny Rakai. Imogen fluffed her fur up and sniffed snootily at the girl. Once it became evident that neither of them wanted the books, Fanged put them in a separate stack. If she wanted to find the ghost book, she was going to need a system to sort through the books quickly.
“I don’t suppose you have any ideas?” she asked Imogen.
The Rakai blinked at her sleepily, her only response a yawn. That was hardly helpful. She scanned the books, sighing as she tried to find the correct one. Just as she was starting to grow dreadfully bored, her eyes caught sight of a book with an unusual, glowing cover. She felt immediately drawn to it, instinct driving her to pick it up.

Her fingers tingled as she touched the cover. She wanted to put the book down, not liking the way it felt. It felt almost like it was filled with death and that gave her a deep feeling of dread. Imogen jumped down from the shelf she had been perched on and trotted over. Fanged knelt down so that Imogen could see as well.
“The Spirit World,” she read the title.
The book made her skin crawl, but it appeared to be the one she was meant to find. Now she needed to figure out what the secret was behind it. She flipped through the pages, trying to ignore the tingling in her skin. Most of the book was difficult to read. The words were in a blurred font that was very difficult for Fanged to distinguish the letters of. Imogen nudged the book when she felt that Fanged was taking too long to flip the pages.

Fanged could distinguish a few words like “death” and “burial”. The title referenced the spirit world, was this book trying to tell her how she could access such a world? She didn’t know much about the spirit world and how much she believed it to be true. She knew that there were rumors of a place that could bring pets back to life. She didn’t know how it worked exactly. She frowned as she tried to find a page that she could actually read. It took her a while, but halfway through the book was a page with words that were crystal clear.
“It looks like it’s detailing some kind of dark magic. There’s no way to tell how accurate this is. I don’t know enough about magic to tell,” she told Imogen.
The Rakai tilted her head, barring her teeth at the book. It was as if she could sense the dark energy it contained.

Fanged skimmed through the pages, frowning slightly as she read various words. It was hard to make sense of it all, but the entire thing seemed rather foreboding. She closed the cover, jumping as the book began to glow with a brighter intensity. In an instant, the book sucked all of the light out of the room, leaving them in complete darkness. Imogen inched closer to her, pressing against her legs for support.
“Well that is certainly frightening,” Fanged murmured.
Imogen grunted in agreement. It became clear that they had accomplished everything to be done in this room. The book vanished from her fingers in one final burst of light before abandoning them in the darkness. She would need to find them an exit now. Her hope was that the book had triggered some kind of secret passage that would take them somewhere new. She would just need to find it first.

She felt uneasy in the dark. She didn’t have the greatest vision in the dark and creatures could come equipped with night vision. Sometimes those creatures could be controlled by people for nefarious purposes. Fanged crouched down and picked up Imogen. The Rakai relaxed in her grasp. It was easy to forget sometimes that she was still a baby. Fanged wasn’t sure how that worked exactly with custom pets, but perhaps Imogen still needed some parental affection.
“I’ll get us out of here,” she promised.
She wished that Rusty was here. He had excellent night vision and was typically eager to explore new places. Even if he didn’t quite understand serious situations, he usually ended up helping her immensely. She missed the halfbreed terribly, but she’d be able to return home to him soon. Finding Imogen had been worth it. They were closer than they had ever been before and that alone assured Fanged that the risk had been worth it.

She carried Imogen around the room, navigating it with rather poor coordination. Fanged was sure to have bruises in the morning from where she crashed into the various bookshelves. After a good half an hour of searching, she finally found that one of the bookshelves had been pushed forward. Imogen squirmed as she tried to get a better look. Fanged contemplated putting her back on the ground, but she settled after a few moments.
“Hello? Is anyone there?” she called into the space.
It wasn’t necessarily an address to any people that might be hiding about. She was testing for an echo. The sound echoed back, which meant that the area behind the bookcase would be rather small. That didn’t necessarily mean it was a dead end. In all likelihood, it was probably a hallway. She tightened her grip on Imogen the slightest bit and stepped forward. Imogen appeared rather calm.

Fanged once again wished she had a flashlight. If only she wasn’t too broke to afford one. Hopefully, she would be able to pick one up soon, but she needed to save up enough for a variety of mining equipment. She knew the pocket pets she had picked up would sell for a fair amount and if she continued, she might find even more.
They walked a fair distance before they came across a light source. A phantom, blue glow emitted from a strangely, twisted lightbulb embedded in the ceiling. The light was unconventional, but Fanged was happy to no longer be in complete darkness. Imogen squirmed until she was placed on the ground. Fanged made note of that. It was possible that the Rakai had a fear of the dark. It was a rather common fear, one that Fanged was not immune to herself. She vowed to work on that with her.

Creepy hallways were a staple of horror movies. Creepy secret passage hallways even more so. Imogen appeared to have a burst of confidence now that there was some light in the area. Fanged felt on edge. Usually these types of scenarios led to some sort of jump scare. She couldn’t keep her mind off of the book. There had to have been some sort of consequences to opening it.
“We’ll keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary,” she told Imogen.
She felt safer with Imogen, even though she was untrained and not strong at all. The mansion could have dangers, she knew that for certain. Her last mansion trip had involved zombie hands that attacked her and Rusty. She could only hope there wasn’t anything like that hidden at the end of this hallway. She felt a chill in the air, almost unnaturally so. She tried to keep calm, but the situation was eerie.

Wind whipped through the mansion for a bit, a chill was in the air. Suddenly you could see your breath in front of your face. Does that mean there's a ghost nearby?
