A strange mushroom waddled out through a door, stopping short when it saw the person.

Just as Fanged and Imogen were debating leaving the room, the door opened. Fanged tensed, preparing for the worst. When a small, walking shroom entered the room, she relaxed. Pocket pets were rather valuable and she trusted in her ability to catch this one. Imogen narrowed her eyes at the pocket pet, lashing her tail back and forth as it drew closer. Before it could reach the Rakai, Fanged pounced forward, catching it before it could escape. The pocket pet was fierce and unpleasant, but Fanged knew it would be worth a fair amount of credits to the right person. She pocketed it quickly, then prepared to head forward into the next room. Imogen glared at her pockets with unhappiness, but she followed the woman as she stepped through the door. She felt anxious, but the feeling was quelled as she got back into her element. Imogen could at least fight if they needed her to.

Expecting a baby pet to fight was a strange concept to Fanged. It was only a last resort scenario, but it still felt wrong. She knew from the limited info she’d been given that Rusty was incapable of fighting, but Imogen had no such stipulation attached to her.
“I’ll need to train you first, before you’ll be able to battle properly,” she told Imogen.
The Rakai didn’t seem to have much of an opinion on Fanged’s inner musings. She was less willing to listen than either Rusty or Voxel were. She supposed that was deserved. Imogen hadn’t liked her much before everything had gone down. It made sense that her level of respect for the woman remained relatively the same. At least she didn’t seem to be reacting worse to the girl. The Rakai had always had an air of indifference about her. Fanged continued her musings as she entered the next room.

Fanged felt a surge of confidence as she entered the new room. Imogen stepped past her, eyes gleaming in the low light. Fanged wished she had a flashlight or some other tool that could be used to enhance the lighting of the room.
“My eyes really aren’t what they used to be,” she grimaced.
She inhaled deeply, allowing her anger to seep out of her body. Regret was seldom helpful and anger even less so. Imogen walked with poise. Her movements were tentative, as though she expected danger to jump out of every corner. But she walked with her head held high, as though trying to offset the fear with elegance. Fanged watched with interest. She hadn’t studied Rakai behavior before. She was unsure if Imogen was acting normally or if it was a distinguished personality trait. She would need a larger pool of Rakai to observe first before she could say anything with certainty.

Fanged decided she ought to be productive and see if the room held anything of interest. Imogen was busy sniffing at the base of a bookshelf. From what Fanged could tell, they appeared to be in a library. The room was two stories and covered entirely in shelving full of sizable textbooks. It was evident that this was a research library.
“Maybe there’ll be some useful info contained within the texts,” she speculated.
Fanged wasn’t exactly pressed for time. It had been late when she’d gotten to the mansion, but she was not tired enough to find somewhere to crash. Imogen climbed onto the bottom shelf of one of the bookcases. She curled up next to one of the large texts. She regarded it with curiosity for a moment before pushing it forward. After a few careful pushes with her snout, the book fell forward with a loud thud. Fanged stepped closer and picked it up.

The book leaps into the air and spins as it's inspected, emitting a blinding light. Then, POOF, it's gone!

Just as Fanged was about to open the textbook, it disappeared in a flash of bright light. She jumped back, startled. Imogen blinked up at her with a gleam in her eye, as though pleased that the girl had been tricked.
“Did you know that was going to happen?” she asked the Rakai.
If Imogen was a humanoid, Fanged suspected that she would have rolled her eyes. She couldn’t help the itch of curiosity that burned in her skin. The textbook had been ripped away from her before she’d had a chance to investigate it! There was little else to do besides move on.
Imogen hopped down from the shelf and nudged Fanged’s foot. She was encouraging her to check another book. If the next book disappeared as well, then it would be worth looking into. It might have been a one off event, or it might be some sort of greater phenomena at work.

Fanged scanned the various book that were on the shelves closest to her. She reached up and chose one at random, deciding that would be more fun than choosing one based on her interests. She glanced at the cover, reading the words with intrigue. This book remained steady in her hand. The book was titled “The Mechanics of Lying”. She glanced down at Imogen, curious to see her take on the matter. The Rakai was staring at her with bright eyes. When it became evident that the book wasn’t about to disappear again, she ducked her head in disappointment.
“Well this book certainly knows how to capture my interested,” Fanged murmured.
She opened the cover and scanned the pages. There wasn’t much info that she didn’t already know, but the words were interesting all the same. She skimmed the pages until she got to some info that she hadn’t heard of before.

“How to lie without conscious awareness. A lie that is told many times in succession can become a part of our subconscious. When this occurs, a person may lie without second thought. With further time, the person may come to accept that lie as the truth.”
The information was a bit hard to swallow. She understood some psychological effects where people did end up believing their lies, but she didn’t think that had much to do with how many times a lie was told. She believed that what this book was telling was partly true, but it required some sort of psychological predisposition to actually have an impact. Feeling slightly unsettled, she put the book back.
“Do you have any other interesting books for me to read?” she asked Imogen.
The Rakai glanced at her for a moment before moving back to the bookshelf. She nosed at the various volumes before pushing over one.

Fanged frowned as she read the title. “How to dissect a rodent.”
She wasn’t necessarily grossed out by corpses or autopsies, but she had a weaker stomach for it than she used to. Imogen watched her with narrowed eyes, waiting for her to open the book. Fanged sighing, trying to relax her body which had tensed when she’d read the cover. There were no immediate pictures, which allowed Fanged to get a better idea what she was in for before she proceeded too far.
“Seems like it’s an instructional guide for how to cut through rodents cleanly. I suppose it could be helpful to the right person, but I’m not planning on performing any rodent surgeries anytime soon,” she remarked.
She closed the book before she could get to any of the grotesque pictures she was sure would follow. It might be a good idea to desensitize herself to them, but she didn’t want to do that just yet.

She placed the book down, not bothering to thumb through the rest of it. Even if it was hiding secrets, she wasn’t prepared to see them yet. Imogen sauntered over. She was looking awfully confident for a baby creature. Fanged wondered if a creature could have any interest in learning. Rakai were fairly intelligent creatures. They weren’t considered sentient, but they were smarter than the common animal. Perhaps it was possible that they could be taught to understand certain, human concepts.
“Maybe I could teach you a bit of investigating if you’re up for it. Of course, you’d have to trust me a little first.”
Imogen watched carefully. She then turned and stepped back over towards the bookshelf. This time she was a bit pickier as she chose a book. She knocked over a thick textbook that had a magenta cover. Fanged could agree with the choice based on colour alone.

Fanged was momentarily distracted when a leaf blew onto the book, pushed by a breeze that she hadn’t felt herself. Trying to apply logic to the mansion could be an interesting endeavor. She pocketed the leaf, remembering that they were rather important. Once that was settled, she turned back to the book.
“I hope this one is less graphic than the last,” she commented.
Imogen glanced over, moving closer trying to see the pages as well. Fanged sat on the ground, crossing her legs and holding the book closer to Imogen. The two of them looked at the pages. It was evident that Imogen had no interest in reading, but Fanged wondered if she’d be able to understand pictures.
“Hopefully we can find something of use in here,” she told the Rakai.
Imogen nosed the book, making it difficult for Fanged to read. She didn’t let that deter her and did her best to ignore the disturbance.

“Local Creatures, Local Lore,” she read the title aloud. “This seems like it could be helpful!”
Fanged smiled in delight as the two of them peered at the book. To her disappointment, many of the words had been blacked out, as though they were a secret file that she didn’t have the clearance to read.
“How odd. It’s like it always wants us to know certain info. On the bright side, at least none of the pictures appear to be blurred out.”
She furrowed her brow as she regarded the different creatures. It appeared that there was intel on every month except the current one. It was substantially less helpful than it had appeared at first. Imogen nosed the book whenever there was a picture on the page. She seemed intrigued with the pictures, which suggested a certain level of intelligence. The observation made Fanged feel like she had learned a bit more about her pet.

Once she had read as much as she deemed relevant, Fanged shut the book. She placed it back on the shelf, not wanting to leave too much of a mess in her wake. She was growing tired of research, but her curiosity hadn’t been fully satiated yet. Imogen was gradually losing interest in the books. Instead she appeared to be more interested in the shelves. She crawled onto the bottom shelf, trying to figure out how to maneuver herself higher. Fanged watched her, waiting to see how efficient the Rakai was at problem solving. Imogen had already established herself as smarter than the average creature, but she was not on the same level as a sentient being.
“If you need help, just let me know,” she told the Rakai.
She felt confident that the baby wouldn’t ask her for help. She seemed determined to do this for herself. Fanged admired her tenacity.
