Please note...- The last date to post your introduction post is 72 hours from this post. Without an introduction post you cannot battle. - Certain moves can't be used in the Pit because of the surroundings and other moves can affect more than one creature at the same time. After all introduction posts have been posted you will be informed whether those two apply to any of your creatures' moves. - That you have 72 hours to post a response to a calculation post and/or roleplay post. The 72 hour deadline is not extended if your foe posts after a calculation post. Not meeting the deadline results in an automatic disqualification. - That characters level once every 20 posts in the Fighting Pit, but pets gain levels and loyalty towards their owners normally.

The healers had been quick. At least, that was what Rabbit told him when he could think clearly enough again to ask her. He didn't know how long he had stayed like that, the pain blotting out everything--- it had taken all he had just to keep breathing. He'd never felt anything like that before.
"How do you feel?" said Rabbit.
Rhys didn't know what he expected. Admonishment, maybe, despite the fact that Rabbit had agreed to help him do this. She had sided with Aster at first, he remembered. The fact of it had stayed with him even as they journeyed to the Pit together. He hadn't intended to become a champion or anything, but somewhere along the way, it had begun to feel like he had to win, not just to prove something to Aster, but to Rabbit too.
{I'm fine,} Rhys said. It was true, more or less. The healers had done a good job. He didn't even feel a vestigial twinge from his injuries before. And as for his thoughts about losing... It felt like it hadn't really sunk in yet, everything that had transpired.
He watched as the Pit crew cleaned up after the fight. The opponents were long gone. A shudder passed through him as he remembered how the shadow creature's thoughts had sang with glee as she struck him down.
This is what he meant to shield you from, Rabbit didn't say. He didn't quite have the courage to probe her thoughts, to see if it was on the tip of her mind like he was afraid it was.
"If you are well, then let us adjourn," said Rabbit. When Rhys didn't reply, she picked him up, and began on the long walk toward home.
When the next letter came, at last, Rabbit said, "You do not have to go if you do not wish to. There is no penalty for forfeit."
And Rhys had thought about it--- not very seriously, but it wasn't like he hadn't considered the possibility. It hadn't been enjoyable, being hurt. He hadn't thought it would be, but it wasn't as though he had discovered that he was a sucker for punishment or anything like that. It had felt dangerous and frightening and awful, but the thing was, that was how it should have been. Fights weren't meant to be pleasant. And the healers had been there. Rabbit had been there. He felt as though he might have won if he had just managed to keep his head.
That was the whole point of doing this--- to give himself a chance to get used to it, preferably before he died of old age. And he would do better this time. Now that he knew just how bad it could get, anything short of that felt like it might be bearable. After all, he'd survived this, hadn't he?
Those thoughts had carried him all the way to the sands, but now that he was here again, he felt the familiar rush of adrenaline closing over him like water in a tank.
Breathe, he told himself. It was all over if he started panicking before the battle even began.

Name of Owner: Fiera Ferella Name of Pet: Madison Species and Breed of Pet: Candy Corn Bat Level: 42 Loyalty to Owner: 44 Stats:Stamina: 2 Strength: 1 Resistance: 1 Dexterity: 4 Mentality: 2 Any natural boost to stats: None Special Abilities: Fly, Nightvision, Danger Sense (10), Stone Skin (4), Hardy (5) Moves Taught: Scratch (1), Screech (3), Wing Buff (3), Echolocation (5), Sonic Waves (5) Abilities Used on Command: Fly (3) Tricks Taught: Name, Come, No Creature Carries Ribbon? No *Special!* Chosen extra move *Special!*: N/A, no ribbon. Madison had recovered quickly from the last battle. Fiera had never seen magical healing before, and the sight left her a little unnerved. Bruises fading as if bleached in the sun, blood sublimating into the air. There had been no broken bones, but she was sure that she would have had to watch them clatter back into place, like soldiers told to stand at attention. Thankfully, all the creatures here seemed too small to do major damage to each other- with the exception of the whiptail vinesnatcher, perhaps. But other than that, it was a lot of buffeting around and getting knocked out, as opposed to crunching jaws and brute force. She supposed she should be happy about that. And yet... during that last fight, Madison seemed to lose far too easily, not even able to get off the ground before getting smacked down again. She'd have to be more careful this time. Without further ado however, she released her candycorn bat into the arena. Her opponent this time was a tiny... dragon? Fiera couldn't place the species, but with the way it shimmered and shone, she was sure it would be another tough opponent. (Ready!)

Rhys tried to collect himself, size up the opponent before him. Just based on appearances, the creature he was facing didn't seem all that scary. But he couldn't quite calm down, and every move the opponent made had him more on edge, until a voice broke into his mind.
{Would you like some guidance?}
It was Rabbit, calling down to him from the stands. He could pick up her voice easily, having heard it so often. He didn't take his eyes off the opponent, but one ear angled toward Rabbit, for all that they were speaking mind to mind.
{I had not offered before because I believed you wished to attempt this on your own. But sometimes it is easier to do something difficult if you follow another's lead,} Rabbit said. {It is your choice, but I will offer you my assistance if you like.}
Rhys swallowed down the first pangs of guilt and disappointment--- he had failed her with his loss, hadn't he? But no, that wasn't what she was saying; and there was merit in her words, even if they stung. Besides, he was here to gain experience, not make a show of bravado. It... It wasn't shameful to ask for help. All the creatures here had a companion supporting them, after all.
{Alright,} he said.
{Very well. Remember what Aster taught you,} she said. {Whistle for your foe.}
Aster... Rhys blinked. That was right. Aster had taught him something like that. A sound, to warn off strong foes and give himself time to run... He hadn't thought to use it because the vines had failed, that first battle, and because he knew he wasn't running away from this. But he had agreed to give Rabbit's methods a try, and that was what she was telling him to do.
Rhys sat up on his hind legs and let out a shrill whistle, the kind that was sharp and unpleasant even to his own ears.

A screeching noise echoed from the stadium floor, and Fiera groaned with frustration, her sensitive ears starting to ring already. She knew what that sound meant- temporary paralysis, usually enough to mean the end of a fight. She only hoped the Madison was strong enough to resist its siren song, so to speak. Her strategy involved hoping Madison had been fast enough to get the first hit in in this fight, but it would appear not. This pink... thingy was faster than she had predicted. Or, perhaps, just smarter (though she would never admit to being outsmarted by someone else's pet). Still, she could make this work. She had to. "Madison!" The humanish called, trying to be heard over the whistling. "Fly up! Get out of there!" Madison turned her head to obey, and started flapping her wings... but the noise only increased in volume. She bit her lip, waiting to see how this would shake out.

Great. It had made contact. Fiera watched as Madison made the first efforts of taking off, a few strong flaps that otherwise would have let her spiral high above her competitor. Unfortunately, the massive screech had hit her in full force, knocking the candy corn bat to the ground. Fiera could see her struggling there still, dizzy and dazed from the sound, staggering around in random directions. Fiera knew that a creature that relied on sound so heavily would be especially affected by such an attack. There was likely no hope for her recovery now, but Fiera had to try and make an effort. "Madison, fly! Go!" She called out to her pet, hoping the bat could hear her. She could tell that Madison could hear her with her twitching ears, but whether she was capable of comprehending the order in this state... well, Fiera would just have to cross her fingers and hope.

Rhys felt a little surge of satisfaction when he saw the opponent start, but it didn't last for long. She recovered much faster than he had been expecting, and now he was the one who was a beat too slow, watching in dismay as she took off before he could do anything about it. He could fly too--- and he might have to to catch her--- and he was about to do just that when a command came through from Rabbit suggesting something else entirely.
{Put her to sleep if you are able,} said Rabbit.
{Sleep?} said Rhys. {But...} No, he had agreed to try it her way this time. Despite his own doubts, he did as she asked, reaching out with his mind to see if he could snare the opponent with it, lull her into slumber. If this worked, maybe she would become an easier target, that much was true...

-Madison uses fly! For the duration of the flight, Madison will have an effective 9 dexterity.
-Rhys uses sleep! A d10 is rolled, 2 is rolled. Rhys's dexterity of 4 + 2 = 6. Rhys's use of Sleep misses Madison.

Finally, Madison seemed to snap out of whatever surprised fugue state she was trapped in, shaking her head and chirping irritably. And just as her opponent seemed to be gearing up for another attack... she leapt. Up, into the air, flapping madly to escape her opponent. Whatever they had been planning, they had missed her now. Still, she seemed a little disoriented- Fiera needed to find a way to finish this battle, and fast. Well. She had one idea- lets see how this critter liked it when the tables were turned. "Madison, screech!" She called from her vantage point on the floor, her voice echoing effortlessly up to her candy corn bat's ears. She paused for a moment, before taking her place in the center of the field. She opened her jaws and out came a deafening screech, disproportionate to the size of the creature it came from, but surprising all the same.

Unfortunately, it seemed that luck wasn't on their side this time. Rhys felt the other creature flinch away from his attempt to snare her with his mind. He wasn't in the practice of using the ability against unwilling targets, and her erratic flight patterns made it even harder to concentrate.
If Rabbit was disappointed or surprised by the failure, however, he couldn't sense it. He was still awaiting her next instruction when the opponent opened her mouth and let out an ear-piercing screech. Instinctively, Rhys's ears went back, and he backed up a few paces, swinging his head around in a vain attempt to rid himself of the ringing in his ears. Somewhere in his mind, he knew that it was the wrong thing to do; he was wasting precious time, time in which the opponent would be able to strike at him. But even that wasn't enough to stave off the effects.

Fiera knew that the screech wouldn't last for long though. Whatever this creature they were fighting was, it was hardy- it already seemed to be shrugging off the effect of Madison's sonic attack. The pair of them would have to try something else, and fast. Madison still had the advantage however, flying around her opponent's head. With any luck, they'd be able to keep up the assault and keep away from any incoming attacks. "Madison!" Fiera called, keeping a death grip on the railing. "Echolocate!" She called, and the bat immediately sprung into action, making a different sort of noise. This time, she gave off loud, sharp pings, bouncing off of the walls of the pit and her opponent, making note of her location and movements far more accurately than her eyes could pick up. With any luck, that would give them the advantage they needed to make a clean hit.
