Nadia huffed. Of course, Jewel was like a houluh with a bone - once he'd gotten his teeth into the subject, he wasn't going to let go. She went at the weeds with renewed vigour, adamant that she wouldn't let him get a rise out of her. His silliness meant nothing. "There are no details, Jewel," She insisted. In time with her words, another bundle of plants was thrown onto the discard pile. "Sarv has kindly been accompanying me on errands, for my protection." Saying it out loud made her feel self conscious. Her rhythm faltered. Would he think she was paranoid? Crazy? If she didn't look at him, she didn't have to see any sign of ridicule or amusement in his face. Korack stared at the delicious smelling thing, and tipped his head. Bigger than it was before! That was interesting. He made his best effort to bark, but it was more akin to a squeak. [22] [Black Bones - 12]

Jewel did his best to keep himself focused on weeding, and refrained from glancing at Nadia at all. It didn’t surprise him massively to hear that she’d been in need of company - seeing violence in the City had shaken her up badly enough to have a panic attack in the street. To feel that she needed protection, though… that was different, and he was itching to know what had led to it. But tact demanded that he went about it delicately. Even if his whole body was burning with the desire to just come out with it already. “Did something happen?” Somehow he still managed to fumble it, sounding too enthusiastic for casual interest. He winced, glancing over to Wisteria; the jibiji was inching closer to the ohou pup again, pacified by his lack of movement. “Look, it’s not my business, but something must be bothering you a lot.” [23] [Black Bones - 13]

It was a long story, and nothing that could be said in a rational way. Nadia could only go on gut feelings, as it stood - she had no evidence that anything was happening at all. Thinking that someone may have followed her once or twice was not conclusive. “No… nothing. Sarv simply advised me that… well, it can be unsafe for a lady in the City,” She explained. It was not a lie; she had discussed that topic with the knight the very first time they’d met. “A-and since I have no trained guard animals at my disposal, he has been ensuring I travel securely.” The delicious smell was almost overwhelming for Korack. The closer Wisteria got, the faster his stubby tail wagged, until he could finally stick his nose against the plumage and sniff. Yummy! “I… appreciate the concern, Jewel,” Nadia added, gathering enough courage to give the fae a timid smile. [24] [Black Bones - 14]

Wisteria was confused by the puppy, but for what it was worth, he didn’t seem aggressive. The breaths of warm air against her feathers actually felt rather nice! She was happy to tolerate it for the moment with a low coo, letting her plumage settle down to acknowledge that she felt safer. “It’s nothing, Red. You know me,” Jewel grinned back, gesturing to the growing pile of discarded weeds on his side. “Good Samaritan and all that.” It felt like they were out there for ages, but it was likely only the matter of an hour or so. Though they’d only cleared a relatively small patch, there was still satisfaction in seeing the progress. The sun was sinking in the sky - damn, the days were short - and the fae had had enough of weeding for one day. “So… you got any dinner plans?” His stomach grumbled. “I’m starving.” [25] [Black Bones - 15]

The back-and-fourth didn't go unnoticed; peeping eyes a fair distance watched with careful sight, looking keenly on how the sentients entangled themselves in the vegetation, piling it and freeing the dirt. The cat wasn't a stranger to the sights of two-leggeds and the way they went about in the land. This one had little care for the plants and pieces that littered the area, far more interested instead in the smaller companion that kept them company. Not a lerrel for sure, but perhaps just as tasty...

Two nice, ripe, very red fruits before the last of autumn fades!

The days were rushing by, Nadia felt. Time was not on her side. She would blink, and weeks would fly away from her - a month or two would go by without her seeing anyone, talking to anyone, other than her animal companions. Was it not unhealthy? A bad habit that it was her responsibility to break? A vague attempt to be proactive in breaking out of such a slump was bringing herself to her garden. Doubtless, more work would need to be done, but at least it wouldn't be quite as shabby as the last time she'd been away from it for a while. Roping in Jewel to help had been the best possible thing. Accompanying her was Laoise, as mild and patient as ever. They'd grown past the need for the tether, which was of great relief to Nadia; she didn't like binding the izer to her in that way. It was much more pleasant for her to perch on her arm of her own accord, as she was doing at that moment. [Summer - 1]

Nadia pushed open the gate with a sigh. The garden was hardly overrun with weeds or tangled with thorns, but she could already see unruly areas, and trampled grass. Evidence of something or other running around in her plot. As long as they hadn't done any serious damage, it would be fine-- One of her ornaments had been knocked over. "Oh, my..." the small relief was that the gnome was not broken, but he was smeared in the face with dirt. "We should clean you up..." It was a good thing she'd remembered her gloves. With them on, she had no qualms about rubbing her thumbs over his little features, clearing him of soil. Laoise watched with curiosity, making a soft coo in her throat. "Yes, that's better." The figure was set back on his feet in his rightful place, shielded by a hideously untrimmed shrub. "One small problem rectified." [2]

Where to begin with the rest of it? Looking at it as a whole was too overwhelming, so Nadia knew it was wiser to set her mind to one task at a time. She'd be able to breathe a sigh of relief once a small part had been chipped away. "Then how about... shrubbery, first?" They were already squatting by a bush, after all, and the branches were poking at her arms in a way she didn't appreciate. "Trim them and clear away the clippings. That will make everything look a bit tidier, will it not?" Laoise couldn't argue even if she wanted to. She instead took to hopping up onto the fence post nearby, in favor of scouting out the area instead of being harassed by the greenery. There would definitely be things of interest rustling around in the grass, and if she could hunt some, all the better. [3]

Nadia wasn't the biggest fan of handling shears, with her track record for mishaps, but there was no other choice. If she wanted to live in a mess, she could lay them aside, but this was meant to be about fresh beginnings. Clearing out the old to make way for the new. So, she took them firmly by the handles, and made a start on the gnome's shrub. The branches were a little more stubborn than she anticipated; she had to put far more effort into clipping them than she had expected. Served her right for leaving them to become stubborn, she supposed. Laoise didn't enjoy the sound of the metal very much. She ruffled her feathers and hopped further down the fence, training her gaze on the untouched grass beyond. Nothing was visible at that moment, but who knew? With enough patience, something might come along to entertain her. [4]

How long did it take her to tackle one shrub? Entirely too long, in Nadia's opinion. The sun was already becoming offensive, despite the day being relatively young, which made her extra grateful that she'd had the foresight to wear a hat. The greater worry was whether or not she'd remembered to pack her water bottle. Laoise had no such concerns. She'd spotted something moving around in the grass, and had her eyes focused there, waiting for it to either emerge or scurry too close. It would be easy to jump down and snatch it! (Truth be told, even with her disdain for watching hunting happening, Nadia wouldn't have minded some light pest control.) With the gnome's home all spruced up, she swept up the clippings, depositing them in the wheelbarrow she'd invested in. Secondhand, from another garden owner. It was remarkable what you could find if you knew where to look. [5] *
