"Laoise," She said, quiet. The izer was growing accustomed to the sound of her name, bit by bit - it was going to be a steady process, helping her fit in with the rest of the household, but they'd had a promising start. From what Nadia could establish, she was rather brave and steadfast, which was another boon. All the better when her future job was penned to be as a messenger. "How do you find things, girl?" Even if the creatures never answered her, she drew comfort from speaking to them. They watched, and listened, and that was more than could be said for a lot of people. Laoise looked back at her with golden eyes, attentive despite the barrier of understanding and language. Small things like that were the most important. The woman took out a berry from the pouch in her satchel, and held it out for Laoise to take. [2]

The izer stared at her gloved palm for a moment, weighing it up, and found it safe enough to take the berry. Nadia smiled; it was a basic show of trust, but a solid foundation to build on. It was good if they were on the same page. In the meantime, working out where in the garden to start was a good plan. The place wasn't infinitely vast, but it was big enough to take a decent chunk of time to organise and tidy up. That was okay. More quality time spent with the newcomer. Even better was that none of the others were around to get jealous. "Look at these weeds, Laoise," She said, motioning to the leaves poking through the gravel of the path. "I suppose it might be an idea to clear these out before we proceed deeper, hm?" Laoise cooed low in her throat. "Right you are." [3]

The gravel was not comfortable to kneel on. Nadia grimaced when she settled onto the ground, struck with the notion that she should've brought an old cushion with her; even for someone as young as her, it was going to be sore after a while. While her legs were holding up okay, though, she set about pulling up weeds. The pulled plants were stashed into a paper bag, to be relocated for composting. She could hear Laoise spreading her wings, fluffing her feathers - sitting around watching a human doing her chores wouldn't have been the most thrilling thing. "I promise we will work on something more exciting soon, girl," She said. The izer scooted further along the fence post as her tether would allow her, trying to keep pace with Nadia as she moved down the path. "Something to get your teeth into. Or... your beak into, rather. Forgive the expression." [4]

It was surprising how fast the weeds were piling up. Soil was scattered over both the gravel and Nadia's legs, but she wasn't afraid of getting her work clothes dirty. Coming out in her finery would have been a silly mistake. The gloves prevented her from her fingers getting too sore, as well - the fact that they also worked for falconry was a pleasant bonus. Laoise wouldn't mind if they were a bit earthy by the time they got around to training. How much did the izer know, anyway? She wondered as she peered at her; it wasn't clear if she was aware how to fly, since she hadn't had much of an opportunity since coming to the estate. She was certainly aware of her wings and eager to test them, judging by the way she fanned them out. Her claws flexed against the wood of the fence... gosh, they were bigger than Nadia had anticipated. [5]

The work kept Nadia solidly occupied for a good quarter hour. It felt like she'd done a lot, by the time she pulled up for a break - but only a fraction of the whole trail was weed-free, and some patches looked far more stubborn than the ones she'd dealt with already. Great. She wiped her forehead with the back of her arm, and turned towards Laoise at the appearance of a melodious sound, assuming the izer was singing. But it wasn't her. Puzzled, Nadia rose to her feet, and coaxed Laoise onto her gloved wrist. What was that sound? The izer's sharp eyes were trained on a patch obscured by shrubbery a few metres away, so she made her way towards it. When the bushes were parted, she was pleasantly surprised to discover a lotine, and smiled. "Hello, little one..." Quiet so as not to frighten her, she stooped low. "What brings you here, hm?" [6]

The Lotine was startled again when she was spoken to, and inched backwards. However, this woman's voice was soothing as well, soft and pleasant. Finding herself closing her eyes for a moment, she sniffed the air, testing for food.

Nadia froze the second she saw discomfort in the lotine's movements. Poor thing - it couldn't have been happy, being suddenly advanced upon by a red woman and her big bird. Laoise had refrained from doing anything but looking at the creature, but she gave a little trill at that moment, cocking her head slightly to the side. "Would you perhaps like a treat? Let me see..." What to give, what to give. She wasn't overly familiar with the diet of lotine, but she had a vague inkling that they would eat fish. If she was lucky, she'd have some dried ones tucked away in her treat bag... "Here, what do you think of this?"
They weren't going to match up to dedicated lotine food or a fresh catch, but it was a token of friendliness if nothing else. The fish were placed down, and then Nadia backed off with Laoise in tow, giving the lotine the space to decide.[7]

Sniffing the air some more after cautiously watching the woman, she leaned forward to nibble on the fish. Oh this was different, but it still had that taste... Happy now, she ate the fish and then inched forward again to sniff at the woman and the bird. This would be alright, as long as they let her follow...
[Congratulations, you've tamed the Lotine!]

Nadia waited with bated breath to see if the lotine would bite. She angled herself away to give the creature some privacy, hoping that it would encourage it to eat - and it seemed to do the trick, because the fish was gone rather quickly, and a new friend had been made. What a relief. "Good, good. I am very glad it is enjoyable," She murmured, keeping her voice quiet just in case the lotine was prone to spook. "I will be continuing my work here on the path, so you may stay here if you like. Make yourself at home." As she turned away, she noticed a glowing flower sprouting near the bush. With a smile, she plucked the bloom from its stem, holding it up for Laoise to look at. The izer leaned in to inspect the petals. "What do you think?" She asked, and Laoise cooed. "Quite. I love the colour." [8]

Back to the path they went. Nadia lowered her arm so Laoise could step down onto the fence post; the tether was looped around the wood, just to ensure that the izer wouldn't fly away and get lost. When she was sure that their bond was strong enough, she'd be happier to allow her to forego any restriction. It felt strange, penning creatures in that way. She was doing it for safety, but it still didn't sit well with her - it was lucky that Laoise had no objections, and was content watching her continuing to weed. She had a wonderful temperament so far. The lotine hadn't frightened her at all. "Alright, let me see..." Yes, still a long way to go. The woman refrained from sighing and stooped down to her job once more, but not before offering Laoise another berry, which was gulped down. "Good girl. Thank you for your patience." [9]

It was easy to lose track of time, wiling it away in the garden. Nadia would undoubtedly feel every second she'd spent huddled over later, when her back and knees were aching, but the minutes flew when she was focused. The weeds were piling up in their paper bag, and infinitely more soil was scattering over the stones and her legs simultaneously. A bath with oils and candles would be a necessity afterwards. Laoise was beginning to get restless by the time half of the path was done. Nadia could hear her shuffling around on the fence and worrying the post with her beak; she'd have to hurry herself up and turn attentions back to the izer before she became disruptive. Having her get a splinter or swallow some wood would be a nightmare. Quick, quick, pull up the rest of those pesky plants and get back to actual business... [10]

Among the blueberries, a single little flower grows. It seems strange, you might want to study it. [You've discovered an egg! Your character may take this home with them.]
