The establishment was quite as curiosity. The lepus had never attended the center, and had indeed had a prior sense its purpose remained within more husbandry-styled domains. While such seemed to remain true enough in touring the halls of the establishment, there were also options much closer to the horticultural field, of which he was pursuing. The objective had been quite simple. Of the current flora in the garden, there were the creatures known as 'pachee'. From a surface-level perspective they hardly appeared different to the standard make and style of other creatures, though careful study would reveal them to be quite a great deal more plant than animal. Indeed, the commonality of such even extended to the manner in which they bred, not dissimilar to blooming flowers.
Such creature could, then, be bred and cross-bred across several types of themselves, to produce more wondrous colours and admirable qualities. To say the results were 'breeds' as such was not quite as accurate, for each seemed to follow a unique line of itself, but the principles behind the floral science none the less applied, based upon the stock and even certain environment factors.
The mammalian had been considering this for some time, as gardening was becoming an increasingly more fascinating hobby to pursue.

The laboratories did not have a circle of floral enthusiasts to take investment in, or such did exist it remained within a private sector of close-knit associates far too removed to encounter on one's own. He had hoped to begin with smaller, more plainer flowers to learn the secrets of such a trade as well as the techniques to raising them. Roses, perhaps.. Orchids, if he had felt so inclined as to be bold. Rather instead, all focus in regards to flowers seemed to have been divided between the floral creatures instead, where most enthusiasts of the field would be encountered.
Each such expert had their own specific field of study to focus upon. Some would specialize on the lotine and their lola, some would pursue the breeding of a menagerie of root offspring, and some pursued the breeding of the aforementioned pachee. Certainly, each would be quite curious to attempt, though the lepus had chosen to begin with the pachee in question. The prospects of such results and options towards cultivation seemed the most engaging, given the care and precision required of raising such. Further cultivation, then was quite simple, as the floral creatures certainly knew how to proceed on their own. His own presence seemed merely a formality.

The better example of that statement the simple fact he could remain outside of the garden room where the creatures had been taken to. There was protocol to follow, and should the creatures find each other agreeable, there was hope for pollination. However the process of such could be quite extreme on the sense of another person or being, particularly if one was allergic to the common pollen. As such, he had quickly amended his initial impression of the center. The style of it felt surgical, a heavier emphasis placed upon the cleanliness of the spaces rather than what he knew most husbandry to be. Hygiene was indeed important, though most animals and even Laboratory made creatures could not exist within a sterile vacuum of it. Certain natural elements of air and dust were required, to ensure their immunities could improve.
That notion had rather the opposite effect when it came to the breeding of pachee, however. The further he researched the field, the more he understood it was not quite a physical process as with husbandry, but entirely based upon plant-based transmissions of genes. Some plants would reproduce through their roots, others through flowers and seeds. The pachee had adapted to using pollen and certainly in no small quantities of it.

The description of the process, made by well-known experts in the field, was quite clear on the matter. During pollination, it was recommended to keep the pachee as close to each other as possible, but to retain a distance from the scene itself for one's own health. Presumably the proximity was to ensure a proper maturing from the female's side. The distance, however, was so the breeder themselves could avoid inhaling any such to the possible detrimental effect of their health.
The two creatures were currently contained within an indoor garden of their own within the facility, and had little aversion to one another to begin with. This was a promising sign, especially when the male had attempted to sway his tail a few times to entice the female, yet without too much result. Even so, the cloud of pollen produced was impressive, and certainly exceeding a typical flower's method. The lepus was not affected by any form of allergy, despite other parts of his health none the less suffering, but he did not presume the scene of this attempt to be a pleasant one for one's breathing. And thus, the impressions of overzealous cleanliness were overturned, as he began to saw the reason behind the decision.

It was indeed much more convenient for one's own condition to remain outside the room and observe as necessary, rather than have them exist within a field outside. There was a practical element as well. Gusts and breezes outside could affect the success rate of the pairing, should the pollen be dispersed far too much. Within the confines of the room, however, the conditions were under much more regulation and control. The pollen had little room to leave or be carried away, thus attributing to the attempt at hand. It seemed the male one certainly presumed to be ready, though the attraction had not yet made an impression on the female one.
Alas, as things went, such was the fickle nature of these types of breedings. It could be easier to graft a rose or an orchid, to add elements of other breeds as necessary and grow the result of such, but creatures had intent and reasoning and could not be forced. A process more natural, both parties had to agree lest the attempt fall through. He could not fault this, and neither was there dejection to be found should that be the case. It merely meant he would have had to find a male with more agreeable temperament to the female's tastes.

That could have proven to be the challenge inherent within this hobby, a match less of desired genetics as desired character. If the two concepts could be married, then it would be all the better, and the result far more potent for it. Selective breeding was not an unfamiliar term, for it happened often within both the houses of the wealthy as well as the average farm. Good breeding stock meant healthy offspring, which could then be bred themselves to further enhance the necessary traits of one kind or another. Such traits didn't necessarily represent appearance. Mannerisms, temperament and character could also be qualifiers. And the pachee, while not overly abundant in specific forms of character, were still none the less creature able to exhibit them.
All such considerations aside, the lepus remained patient for the time being, however. There could be many different intricacies that need to be accounted for when pursuing this horticultural hobby and not all of such can be learned through reading. Quite a large amount of true knowledge came from experience, of that constant attempting regardless of success and failure. Failure, too, could at times offer up far more prudent lessons than success. And as such it should not have been shunned, but welcomed.

It wasn't that the female appeared completely disinterested in the male, but perhaps the latter's attempt to proceed had been presumptuous. The female was a lively nature and continued to display evidence of curiosity, both towards her surrounding as well as him. However it could also be presume the surroundings were currently contending for her attention. Of what he had learned of prior owners, the male had been to the facility once before and thus was likely feeling more at ease to return. The female, however, had no such benefit. All aspects of the experience were quite new and thus quite unknown. Her curious nature lead her to explore the perimeter of the enclosed garden pen before she even took stock of the male inhabiting it.
She would require more time to acclimate to the surroundings, in short. Should she then find the male unsuitable, further steps can be taken to seek additional stock, or perhaps determined the potential cause of the rejections. Whether it was due to colouration, temperament or merely lack of skill in showmanship. After all, as with many females of other species, one had to impress first and foremost, before courtship could even be considered. Without that vital step, there was little purpose to attempt anything further.

With that said, there were many different forms of courtship and styles of showmanship, each unique to the species they applied to. The literature he had studied did not make a distinction of either for the pachee, merely resolving to mention that the swipe of the male's tail is the main process by which pollination is begun. This could then, presumably, allude to a fact the pachee did not have a form of showmanship as other species, or the styles of such varied in so great a range as to be unable to be summarized. Of what he had read, the male had only participate in one other breeding attempt prior, so he too might yet require more practise in the skills of catching and keeping the female's attention. Perhaps the confusion between them applied to both. To one it was one, while to the other the series of events hasn't quite progressed as previously anticipated, thus leading to uncertainty.
But, nature had a way to smooth over so simple an issue eventually. Should nothing occur that attempt, they can merely return to retry another time. Perhaps with time and growth both of the pachee could obtain the necessary understanding of the skills required, as commonly happened when a creature matured.

Among the other types of information in short supply regarding the pachee had to do with age itself. There didn't seem to be a distinction in maturity as such. Certainly, a pachee would have to be fully developed in order to be considered mature, though beyond that there was little distinction as to stages of age. Whether because the field of their breeding was still quite new, meaning there to be no evidence to observe regarding elder pachee, or the species itself wasn't prone to ageing in quite the same fashion as other animals. Either option had merit, when considered. After all, while a seasonal flower might bloom briefly for only a mere set of months, a tree can grow and remain alive for centuries. Where, then would the pachee have fallen within such a broad range?
And to that subject, would their behaviour patterns even change over time? Would time itself affect the ability to pollinate or the desire to? Many mysteries yet remained with the pachee, as even experts of the field were remiss to make certain claims to either side the arguments. In fact most appeared content to merely wait and see, to have time take its course and then document the appropriate results.

The lepus was well within his reason to presume he would not be able to make such discoveries himself. If indeed the pachee took to having a lifespan more akin to that of trees, and such patterns of behaviour could alter in the later stages of life, there simply wouldn't be enough years left in his own to document this. Retirement was not a concept he was entertaining, but the hobby to breed these creatures was perhaps a compensation towards finding fields of interest beyond the common line of work. If such attempts at horticulture produced any notes worthy of publication, then he could certainly share them, though the chances seemed slim.
Eventually, the turn of the attempt appeared to have turned for the favourable. The female had inspected the area to her satisfaction, thus once more able to focus on the male alone. To the latter's credit, his second attempt towards showmanship of prowess and his vibrant coat went quite better than the first, securing her attention as well. It had been written that certain berries might assist with the breeding process, either towards particular selection or success rates. The lepus had left this to the discretion of the creatures themselves, as the berries were within the pen for either to eat. Fortunately, the male seemed to have the sense to offer them to the female by means of tribute, and that seemed to have secured her affections as well.
