Semi-physical hooves brushed through the grass as the equillion waded her way through the undergrowth. When the fae had described the garden proper, the sphinx had expected something a little more tamer than this, as the bounds of the canopy and bushes seem to almost be comparable to the very jungles of the west. Something here went wrong, enough so as to cause the very garden itself to become hostile territory for anyone looking to cross, and the mammalian and equillion were doing just that.
So it's all because of some flower, the equillion snorted, sounding less than impressed.
Darky consulted a rough map of the garden as she rode in the saddle on her back, trying to mark off some form of landmarks within the indiscernible tree line, but finding it difficult to do so. I don't think the flower did.. whatever it was that happened. But it sounds like the flower can fix it.

So all these plants are supposed to be angry with us? the equillion continued with annoyance, stomping down perhaps a little stronger on the grass and thicket before her as she walked through it. The sphinx had tried to explain their objective to her, but the equillion none the less didn't seem to find it all that relevant, or even important. Her old tainted mind would have continued to approach it the same way as most other problems - If it is one, just burn it down. Incidentally plants happened to be especially good at doing just that.
Some, not all, the sphinx looked up from the make-shift map, turning around in the saddle this way and that. We might be lucky enough not to encounter them at all, if we're quiet enough, but if we do, we should be ready to face whatever lurks here. 'Quiet' wasn't necessarily something Nightmare was exceptionally good at, which was surprising considering half her legs (and most of her body) only existed in a spiritual sense.

The sphinx was worries, though, and the equillion could sense it. They had been wandering the edge of the garden for a time, hoping they could find the flower without venturing too much deeper in, but found nothing. The only way in was through a tree line and overgrowth thick enough to be a veil, so they faced the very real potential of walking blindly through the heart of the garden.
Luckily the sphinx had located some landmarks to track their progress so far, but it seemed any further ones were either lost, covered by plants or not there. A shed had been their first one, then an old trellis for vines (largely under the vines). A small pond was the last one which pointed them this way. According to the map and the fae, they should have seen a series of small boulders by now, which meant they would be close, but the best she could see is green, green and more green.

I'm starting to think I should have asked Amonuro to scout this out for us.. Darky sighed, eyes darting from one side of their flank to another, while the equillion kept her gaze forward.
He'd been eaten in one bite, the equillion snorted.
He's a spirit, he can't exactly be eaten.
Yeah? Well ask him how he feels next time something throws fire at him, the equillion's head turns to gaze back at her with one baleful eye, Even spirits can be burned.
The sphinx merely frowned, but the equillion could feel that the point was conceded. Being ethereal didn't mean being immune.. And being made of wind perhaps only meant that fire would find that much easer a purchase to ignite within. Though, just because it was true didn't mean the equillion had to put it in so blunt a term.
Let's just keep going. We have to be close by now.

While it did surprise her that for all the garden was described as overrun, and they hadn't met any particular resistance so far, then it only made her nerves that much more sharper and her concern that much more deeper. It wasn't an ideal type of terrain for the equillion, but if they needed to make a quick getaway, Nightmare was the best bet. For all she knew, they were being watched that very moment, followed along, tracked.. Perhaps even lead to an ambush (assuming the plants had a sense to think in such complex tactics).
Gift equillions aren't good to be inspected, yes, but sometimes failing to pay attention to them could cause troubles down the line (particularly if they happen to be very large, made of wood and totally not filled with hidden soldiers).
For all the lack of opposition, the garden wasn't devoid of sounds, though. A breeze could rustle the trees, birds would sing between the branches, and distantly she could even hear the sounds of the City.

Eventually the forest parted to either side of them, revealing a clearing. Not a large one, though just enough to have the overhead trees outreach their canopy to cover it from view from above (making her realize that even a flyover would have made it quite tough to find their quarry). Ahead of them, among all the grass, moss and undergrowth were sudden large shapes, looking to be the very boulders the map had described. And in between, nestles between two of them, something.. bright. In colouration, yes, but also in a faint, soft glow, marking those specific plants and something certainly a lot more 'other'.
Those it? the equillion huffed, taking a few steps further out of the thicket behind them, before stopping.
Darky rose up in the saddle, balancing on stirrups as she tried to get a better view. There were still a fair amount of plants between them and whatever it was, but if she was to guess.. I hope so. We'll need a closer look, though.
The equillion moved forwards, stepping through the heavy grass as strands of it sizzled around her cold-touched feet. Until something moved.. It was much too fast for the sphinx's reactions, but the equillion had been in a number of scraps over the years and her instincts were quick to flare and she suddenly spun herself around bodily, nearly causing the mammalian to fall from the saddle, Look out!
In the same turn, her head swung out and jaws tried to clamp around something moving in the thicket, though she could not spot the shape fully. The jaws latched around thin air, while the alarm caused the sphinx to draw her sword and try to guide Nightmare to remain facing whatever was moving around.
I don't see it! Not fully, but she leaned in the saddle and took a swing at the shifting grass looking to rush them again. That one did connect, as suddenly a shrieking echoed throughout the clearing.

When she drew back her blade, it had a black, bracken-looking ichor on it. Not quite blood, but something else. And the grass wasn't moving any more.
The equillion stepped closer, one hoof pawing towards where the shape was, Is it dead? Once the grass had been pushed aside some more, the shape of the attacker was visible - a thin-legged fungal beast, more plant than animal, laying quite still.. but not completely, as parts of it still twitched and shuddered at the cauterized gash strung along its side.
No, Darky confirmed, But it's down, for now.
The clearing echoed with a shriek to match the fallen beast's, or perhaps merely in answer to it. Both equillion and sphinx turned as a figure lumbered it's way up onto the boulders, looking for all the world to be a creature covered in pine needles and thorns, though twisted in all the wrong ways. It was not a kindly looking creature, and it's malicious look caused the sphinx to feel a sudden put in her stomach that seemed both familiar and not (At least in the sense that she wasn't accustomed to be on the receiving end of such).
To either side of the bramble being slithered more beasts, though those looked to be made of vines and teeth.
I think we might have found the 'problem'.. Darky though, nervously, while the equillion squared herself up.
The brambled one moved first, leaping down from the rock to dash across the grass. It was difficult to tell whether it was intelligent or not, but the look on its face certainly had a sense of frenzy, as it beelined for the mammalian. But the equillion was quick to move, jumping aside to avoid the snap of its teeth, returning the attempt in kind with an exhale of shadow and cold.
The brambled thing hissed and retreated, avoiding the smoggy cloud easily, but thus creating opportunity for the mammalian to lean in the saddle and swing her sword. Where the sword connected, the metal cut deep and a small flare flared briefly, before the wound cauterized itself. In turn, the brambles and thorns scratched her arm at the wrist rather painfully.
Suddenly, something swung past her face as the vinecreepers had used the momentum to slither up and strike, one with a swing, the other splitting it's tail into even further vines to latch onto her.

Wounded, but standing, the brambled thing hissed and retreated some distance, before reaching out towards the grass around it and slowly extending its claws through the air. Where it gestured, plants began to grow and sprout, until one became a vine, then a flower, then a berry. It turned and consumed the berry straight off the stalk, and had anyone looked, they would have seen the cauterized wound whole and closed.
But the duo were surrounded and far too busy with the other two at that time. Nightmare, for her part, was reaching a point past annoyance and swung around to stomp her hooves into one of the vinecreepers. It didn't seem nearly as quick as the fungus creature had been - What followed was a soft, but rather wet sound, not unlike breaking apart a cabbage head. The beast remained laying still.
It was then the sphinx turned and noticed the brambled thing further away, looking no worse for wear than before. Damnit. We have to get that one, she turned the equillions reigns and the duo rushed it. The sword swung out once more, and perhaps it caught the brambler off guard, or merely still recovering from the previous wound, the slash undid everything the berry had fixed. The brambler could only take solace in its thorns continuing to leave a mark on her as well.
The sphinx felt a swoosh of air around her for a moment, as something passed by her peripheral vision and suddenly her arms were pulled against her body, herself nearly torn from the saddle as the remaining vinecreeper left behind seemed to take offence to its leader being injured.

Covered in vines, the sphinx hardly had further options as the equillion backed up towards the pull of the creeper, confused and irritated. The brambler, free to break off, turned and ran back towards the boulders, climbing them as it uttered an undulating shriek.
Within seconds, the grass around the clearing began to shift and move again, as similar shapes to their first foe quickly rushed to join the fray. Both went straight for the equillion, and the first one to reach her leapt from the grass, sharpened talons cutting through the air and through her thin skin. The equillion did not shriek, for she did not know pain, but the fungal beast certainly did as the ghost-flames of the barding bit back with revenge.
This seemed to dissuade the other one, who hesitated for a moment, before doubled down in the grass and suddenly sending a spew of acid from its mouth instead. The equillion was quick to duck away from under it, but her attentions still remain on the fight.
Unimpeded, the brambler reached out its hands again and drew them through the air. All around the clearing the grass grew longer, the air became sweeter and suddenly flowers bloomed all around them, radiating a soothing aura. Neither sphinx nor equillion quite understood what was happening yet, for their focus was on the bind they found themselves in, rather literally.
Nightmare wasn't always the quickest on the uptake, but the fungal things trying to distract her aside, she needed but to turn her head to see the mammalian constrained by one of the others. The ghost flames flicker that much brighter as she suddenly spun around in all her fury, NO, YOU DON'T! tramping the beast.
When she finally stopped, it was a (figuratively) bloody mess, in plant terms, allowing the sphinx to slough off those vines which had still roped her up, Thanks..

Things looked to be a mixture of sticky, as the duo remained outnumbered. However, there was also bright sides to look for, seeing as both vinecreepers were now down along with that first fungal beast. A bright side that remained only until the mammalian heard a concerning familiar skittering and could see a fourth shape moved through the grass from the rocks, joining the two already there. It seemed the plants had all decided to gather up in one place.
A series of attacks were barraged at them, as one fungal beast released a sudden cloud of spores which the two evaded quickly, the other swinging its claws at the equillion, but missing. The most concerning one was the attack neither had really expected - Something hit the equillion's side, though it wasn't a strike nor anything that cut through her skin. Instead, a small pod attached to her neck and suddenly sprouted roots, embedding itself within her skin.
Oh, that doesn't look good.. the sphinx stared at it, but could only contemplate it for a short period of time before she had to react to one of the fungal beasts trying to swipe at her feet in the stirrups.
The equillion was about to quip something back, when suddenly the grass around them shuddered angrily. Like a wave, parts of it rose up to crashed not into the equillion, but the mammalian in the saddle, twisting and entwining around her. Now this one she did recognise, much to her misfortune, as the agate often liked using something similar. And leaving her with little option other than to struggle..
And that gave her plenty of reason to be afraid. A feeling which caused the equillion to round on the brambler with a snarled fury, as she let out an otherworldly shriek of terror.

The equillion could watch in satisfaction as the brambler cowered backwards, shaken by the shrill challenge, but the satisfaction was short lived. There were still the fungal beasts to face, one of which spat another of the seeds at her. This time, the equillion was far more prepared and dodges it's trajectory, as much as was possible while the mammalian remained rooted by the plants shuddering and threading around them.
One of the others sent a seed of it's own, and the equillion thought herself proud to dodge two in a row.. until a sudden spike of concern made her realize that one hadn't been aimed at her - The seed sat attached to the sphinx's shoulder, where she was unable to brush it aside as her arms were still fighting off the entangling grass.
Nightmare turned towards the offending fungus with a new-found fury.. when suddenly a coldness she had never known gripped her from the neck down and withering through her. Confusion was quick to follow as her feet felt a sudden drag, her skin a sudden frailness more-so than before. Her eye levelled on the fungus to her right, as a soft green glow seemed to emanate between it and the seed in her neck. HOW DARE! her mental space roared, realizing what was being stolen from her.
But this was no time to lose one's mind to blind fury. The sphinx finally cut through the last of the grass as it withered and faded, the earth around them still once more, save for the soothing scent of the blooming flowers. There's too many of them, we need to put up a defence. "Aura!"

She could sense the equillion's protest, at wishing to forgo defence in order to attack, but either begrudgingly or due to recognising the difficult situation they were in, her flames flared a little stronger and a little colder. It didn't stop one of the fungus beasts from trying to swipe at her all the same, but perhaps the sight of the flames made it hesitate enough to miss. The other open released another cloud of spores, though free of the vines, the two had a much easier time moving away from the oncoming cloud.
Any other ideas? the equillion inquired, checking her anger but only barely.
I might have on– The thoughts were suddenly cut off with a gasp and a lance of pain down the empathic lines, as the sphinx lurched forward, gripping her shoulder. The seed had stretched its roots even deeper beneath the skin, and withered at her defences, while one of the fungal beasts seemed to glow a similar shade of green to its brethren from before, growing larger and brighter in colours.
Whatever concern the equillion was about to express were cut short as suddenly the brambler chargers the equillion's side. She managed to foil the attack with a sudden jump aside, but it was a sharp reminder that the brambler was no less a threat than the fungus beasts, and with each second looked to be regaining its strength.
The sphinx wheezed but gradually regained her breath, feeling the roots dig through her skin. She trusted the equillion to move on her own, instead focusing on ignoring the disturbing sensations in her shoulder. Her hand reached towards a pouch at her side as arcane energies slowly drifted forward from it, Let's see if they can dance.
Twisting her hands into gestures, not unlike the brambler had, she released the spell. Suddenly the very earth around them quaked and shook, spreading outward in a series of waves centred on the duo.
For all they were plants, the beasts seemed unable to keep their footing, as both fungus and bramber alike was shaken and struggling to maintain balance. It was that moment where the equillion moved to attack one of the offending ones, the very one which had thrown and leached the seed on her. To the fungus, it seemed almost a surprise to look up and suddenly see a view of only pale-glowing hooves coming down on it.
It scarcely did anything else, as the beating left it silent and still in the grass, though the seed looked as hale and whole as ever. (12) Nightmare: 96 (3/5)

It removed one problem, but not the issue as a whole. The sphinx scratched at her shoulder, but the seed was embedded deep. To get it off was no simple means of simply picking it up - It had to be cut away, and that required more time than they had. Worse, while the equillion was doing an exemplary job of defending both herself and her rider, then she was falling behind on the enemies, drained to often be just a bit too slow to catch them.
Even as the fungi tried to slice at her feet again, she could see that their other problem went hand in hand with their benefit - The flowers around them helped make the seeds' effect not quite as severe, but it also helped the plant beasts themselves recover faster. More-so the ones who had thrown the seeds, as a steady pulse of green continued to drift towards them from the pods.
We're lagging, the sphinx finally admitted. This is a battle of attrition and right now they're winning. We can't keep this up much longer.
I'M NOT RUNNING, the equillion snarled, far too enraged by the indignant manner of it all.
The sphinx thought for a moment, then reached towards the pouch, You won't have to. When the arcane forces wove themselves into being this time, they swirled around the equillion and set a pep in her step that the seeds had previously stolen. This should help.
While the brambler was still reeling from the tremors in the ground, the equillion stomped towards one of the last remaining fungi, being the chief offenders to her sensibility. Even shaken, their reactions seemed quick enough to avoid her hooves, but they would have to contend with a quicker equillion now than before.
The sphinx was regaining her breath, getting ready to raise her sword and slice the seed off her shoulder, when suddenly she felt a pressure in her other one, against the armour. Then, a sudden sickening crunch as the teeth of the brambler sunk through it and into her skin, lacing it with sharp pain.

She yelled out in pain, grimacing heavily as the free hand swung towards the brambler largely in instinct. It was half-hearted at best, but the brambler released its bite on her and kicked back off of the equillion to be at distance, leering through the blood on its thorned teeth. Even the flowers of the field could hardly dull away the pain, and the sphinx took some seconds to recover as her mind work through the sudden alarm and panic that rose up from the adrenaline kicking in.
It was not the first time she had felt this. Perhaps more's the better she knew how to handle it this time.. But she could hardly survive another such hit. Attrition came in many different forms.
The fungi continued their own assault, as one released more spores to little effect, but the other one spat another seed, this time attaching to the equillion's flank. By this point the equillion hardly even noticed, wheeling around at the bramber for daring to hard her rider. The bramber didn't seem dissuaded and instead charged to strike at her, teeth latching into her neck sooner than she could step away from the lunge.
The wound it tore would have been a terrible sight to behold on the living, more a gap in flesh than a slash or a tear.. but Nightmare wasn't of the living, not any more. You need to fix yourself, the sphinx struggled through the pain, pressing the flat of her sword to her shoulder, to briefly stem the bleeding.
I WON'T LET TH–
Nightmare! the insistence was a voice rarely used. Neither of us are good to each other dead. Heal yourself!
The equillions head arched with bridled fury.. but the voice was the kind that brokered no argument (and despite her reservations, her rage, she trusted her decisions). Ligaments and bones began to move beneath her skin, even the very skin itself moving and stretching to cover the gap the bramber's teeth had left. Not wholly, but enough to mistake it for a lesser wound.
Now lets retaliate.. We need to take down the small ones first, the sphinx nudged her heels in the stirrups, and the equillion rushed the brambler. Two swings flashed through the air, as the sphinx leaned out and slashed one of the fungi once with the sword, and once more with the wristblade. To a gurgled shriek, the fungus dropped and remained still.

As the sphinx rose up in the saddle, they arched their passage around the remaining fungus. The hope had been that having seen such a direct attack, it might not be as aggressive, particularly as it remained the last one standing of its kin. Instead, the reaction was a more defensive move, causing spores to kick up from its body and hitting the equillion square in the face.
The equillion didn't have much need for breathing, but the spores could still sting in other ways, disrupting her vision and senses. The equillion drew to a stop, shaking her head and bringing up a hoof to wipe at her face, to little effect.
An opportunity which seemed to present the bramber with an opening, as it rushed the mammalian again. But even pain-addled, the sphinx was quick to duck and swing her sword in defence, deterring another bite from landing. Attrition.. attrition.. Her gaze moved quickly from the brambler to the forms in the grass. They had been so focused on the moving ones that they hardly noticed those laying still, how the flowers slowly stitched wounds, remade flesh (such as it was with plants). Time was of the essence, and it wasn't looking to be on their side, if they continued to only focus on them one by one.
Whatever you do, hold still. Don't move, the sphinx instructed, and although it caused an involuntary flinch of pain to reach to her pouch, the arcane energies that wove into existence would cause that much more pain to the foes. Winds whipped up, surrounding sphinx and equillion in a gather mass, until suddenly the spell released and cut through the air all around them, slicing the very grass down to half it's size.
Two sets of pained shrieks sounded, but many more were there twitches from those unmoving as the wind tore new wounds, including on the seeds themselves.
