Breathing heavily, the sphinx took in the result of the spell, at the sudden clearance it created within the tall grass, now mowed down to a much more manageable level. The owner of the garden might not have appreciated such a trimming of the lawn, but all things considered they are going to have a lot more to worry about once they get back to them than some damaged properly.
We might yet survive this, breathed a renewed sigh.
In the meantime the equillion had shaken off the worst of the spores, in time to dodge out of the way of the fungus' swipe. Only if we killed them! A motion to her side made her flinch away from something else, some thing new - the brambler stood with its arms outstretched, as it had cast out a chill wind of its own, though the accuracy of it didn't quite live up to the equivalence of the spell.
No! the sphinx frowned, We don't know if they were made to be like this or who they belong to. They could still be saved if we get the flower back in time.
Time they had bought more of, but not enough, as the seeds were still withering away the equillion. Her skin and sinew had to shift around again just to cover the tears and damage the roots were doing, for her to even remain standing. Right.. If nothing else, they needed to deal with those seeds first. The sphinx's hand reached to the pouch again, even as she felt the roots dig deeper in her shoulder, and summoned up the same arcane force as before. This time, when it was released, the winds sliced across the area in much the same height, leaving little of the grass nearly as disturbed as the first time.
Though when the pair of pained shrieks sounded, both sphinx and equillion could feel a sense of relief as all three pods fell to pieces, disintegrating the roots within.

A breath of fresh air almost as sweet as the air surrounding them from the flowers that regrew themselves from the shattered blooms, continuing to offer a sense of soothing alleviation to all wounds. There would be no more hiding for the fungus beasts in the tall grass, though the spell the bramber had weaved continued unhindered.
Turns out, the fungus didn't even need a hiding spot. Too preoccupied with the sudden release from the draining seeds, the equillion spun around a little too late after the sharp talons of the fungus had already sliced through her legs. For any normal creature it would have meant pain. Even her, being undead, there were only so many limits she could survive to, and her legs buckled as she fell forwards.
The sphinx clutched to the saddle, No! Nightmare! reaching out to hold her neck, Stay with me! You need to get up! And she did. She knew she did. Her rider was badly hurt, that soft little organic that had been an annoyance for so many years (but affectionately so. Always there, always supporting). She'd never make it out of the thicket on her own, and something told her she wouldn't leave her behind either.
For her to survive, she needed to. Thus, the equillion shuddered as she pushed her front legs under herself again, rising back to her feet. Whatever force held her together, kept her conscious, made her go on, was made entirely of spite and something stronger than physical wounds. We're.. not.. done.. yet..
The bramber threw more wind at her, and she swayed to the side to avoid it, sending a spewing of her own cold breath in return, as it was then the bramber's turn to cover.
Darky smiled through the pain, and would have loved to remain hugging the equillion's neck if the battle didn't need their attention more. Both the fungus and bramber were still quicker than them.. So she reached for that arcane energy and sent another shock wave through the earth around them. Perhaps that would make them a little less dodgy.

Indeed, but the fungus and bramber were caught off guard, allowing the equillion to more first. Her duel was with the fungus, though even shaken, it seemed able to jump out of the way of her hooves. Similarly, she was able step back in time enough to avoid a slice of its talons in retaliation.
Damnit, the sphinx drew her sword, seeing the fungus still a bit too spry for them. We need to take out the larger one. If its the one commanding them, it might make the other one run away. With a pull of the reigns, she turned the equillion around, and the two galloped towards the bramber, still reeling from the ground trembling beneath its feet.
It is difficult to tell what its impression might have been, to see the hellish horse and its rider bearing down on it, but the sword that swung out cut across it with ease, more so with the fire that burned within. The second strike from the wrist-blade was made with the same coordination, but by that point the brambler was mostly in a state of falling, no longer even aware of the strike landing.

With the brambler down, the two swung around again, as Darky stared at the remaining fungus, the only foe still on its feet. "C'mon, c'mon.. run.." she whispered to herself, hoping this would be enough. Any sane person would have.. Hell, most creatures even would have been able to see the tides have turned, and there's no winning.
But the fungus didn't seem to be like any regular creature. There was a determination, a viciousness that was not inherent to other plant creatures. Something made it stay, and rush them with its claws, even against the evidence. The equillion was able to side-step it easy enough, but one could never know for how long.
We need to kill them! she insisted.
No! I told you, they might still be saved if we get the flower, the sphinx argued back.
But the equillion looked to the field around them, at the bodies slowly stitching themselves together from the healing balm of the flowery blooms, and already some of them look to be twitching and shifting. We ain't getting the flower if they keep coming back..
And she jumped over the fungus beast to rush its comrade in the grass, the one she had previously pummelled with her hooves only to see it nearly whole and hale. The equillion reared up, even as the sphinx protested in her mind, and when her hooves came down on the still form, the sound had a gut-wrenching finality to it.
The blooms would not be able to heal that.
The sphinx was quiet, staring at the back of the equillion's neck, out of words and thoughts. In any other instance they would have had a discussion, a debate, probably even an argument over this, but the battle was far from over.
The bramber moved, stirring as if about to wake, and the sphinx knew the equillion was not as wrong as she would like. It did not mean Nightmare was right, but if the blooms kept healing everyone, they had to keep them down for as long as they could in order to extract the flower.
This isn't over, we'll still talk about this later, she promised, and turned the equillion around to ride at the brambler. A quick slash in passing made sure whatever wakefulness the bramber was having was literally cut short, as it slumped again, though still breathing.
It's still too late for two other forms, as once of the vinecreepers suddenly comes to wakefulness along with another of the fungus beasts. Immediately both return to the fray, one swinging forth vines while the other tries to jump and claw at the sphinx, but both remain groggy enough to miss.

First it needs to be over! the equillion protests, as she dodges a slash from the whole fungus. She backs up and ends up in range for the other one, barely awake from the beating it took before, but enough strength in it to cut its talons across her back legs.
The equillion wobbles again, threatening to collapse, but her spite remains stronger than the damage her body is taking, and the barding flashes a spectral retaliation at the fungal beast. So fragile was its form still, that the damage took it out again, leaving it twitching, but not quite conscious.
Shaking, the equillion wheels on it, and rears back, to stomp down on it heavily, all the while her anger flaring along the empathic paths. WE. NEED. TO. KEEP. THEM. DOWN.
What remains of the fungal beast once she's done would hardly be recognized as its previous form. There will be no more healing from the blooms for that one either.
The sphinx's jaw tightens, the very thought of needing to kill going against her nature. Practicality can be useful in war, but it does little to only rely on cold calculations (More so made by those undead and angry). No.. she still insists, and wheels the equillion on the living fungus, although the sword and wrist-blade are quick to miss.
Behind them, the vinecreeper regains an ally of its own, as its twin slowly rises to wakefulness, the blooms continuing their service and disservice in one. The sphinx had to dodge not only a tail whipper in her directly, but also a leap from the second one, as it looks to bite into her, though missing.

Ahead of them, the fungus continues to try and claw at the equillion's heels, though she's quick enough to back up and out of range for any serious damage. Between the three attackers, all looking to take a bite, the equillion's flared her smog flames once more, radiating a chilling cold.
Both warning and a very real threat to retaliate with magic of her own, should anyone get the idea to try something, even as her feet barely hold her upright.
The sphinx in turn, guides her forwards and around, to arc past the fungus where she leans down in the saddle and swings both sword and wrist-blade in turn at it. It perhaps surprises her more than the fungus when the sword manages to cut into it, nearly severing half of it between the two strikes, as the grass gives little cover for them down.
Pulling herself up in the saddle again, they ride towards the vinecreepers, dodging to the side of one as it throws acid at them, and having to bodily avoid the other as it leaps towards them for a bite.
They WILL keep coming back up.. And I might not, the equillion finally says.

It's certainly a gut-wrenching kind of truth, and one she knows the equillion would make out of honesty than a need to win an argument.. but if they can help it, they should manage the risks with the situation at hand. The vinecreepers remain the primary concern so long as their vines can still tangle them, but unlike the fungus, their slithery forms make them slower to attack and easier to hit.
The equillion jump at the first one, hooves coming down only inches from where the vinecreeper was, as it slithers to the side. This, however, puts it right in the direct path of the mammalian's weapons. Where the first strike misses, the secondary swing of the wrist-blade still manages to slice off a few of its tendrils, leaving it wounded but standing.
It's retaliation to swing its vines back at them might have even worked, if some of them had not been cut off. As it stood, the rider and equillion were able to get away from it to line up an attack on the second.
But that one was quicker to react, huddling back into the grass until the very last moment, when the vines suddenly swung up and around the equillions form. The barding burned the vinecreeper with ghost-flames, but the grip itself held, suddenly pulling the equillion to a screeching (and angry) halt.
As if the events could not sour any further, sounds from behind them gave evidence that the blooms had revived yet another - one of the fungus slowly dragged itself to wakefulness, and immediately rushed the mammalian to swipe at her feet, though without much luck.

We can still fix this! the sphinx remained stubborn, though at this point it was anyone's guess whether it was meant at the equillion or herself.. Failing to hit her, the fungus instead looked to strike at the equillion, though even grappled by the vines she was able to raise her feet out of the way in time.
We don't HAVE to fix anything! Nightmare's flames flared brighter as she burned the vines away, freeing herself from the hold and immediately wheeling on the fungus. The two had practised enough to have a sense of tandem, to know and feel when one was ready while the other wasn't, and the equillion knew the sphinx would take the attack without needing to confirm it.
The blades did indeed come down on the fungus, this time slicing not quite as deep as some of the others, but enough to bring it back down into the grass, twitching and done. No.. but we should try if we ca– the though was interrupted as the mammalian was smacked upside the helmet with a vines tail. She turned and frowned at the vinecreeper hissing at them, in time to duck under the tail of the second one. They didn't have to kill to survive this.. but damned if these things weren't making that decision hard to keep.

Look, it's just these two remaining. If we can take them up, we just need to make sure no-one else gets up while we get the flower and leave. Whatever happens after is the fae's problem, whether he would look to save them or somehow banish them back from whatever place they came from. Somehow she doesn't feel all too confident to believe these creatures are entirely Lab-made..
The equillion's response is an annoyed snort, not nearly ready to concede the point, but she does turn and turns the snort into a full-fledged gust of hellish fire, made from shadows and cold. The vinecreeper backs up, but is not nearly fast enough to slither away from the oncoming cone, instead shrieking and falling down into the grass, frosted and shadow-touched in equal turns.. but alive.
While the equillion deals with that, the sphinx turns and swings her blade at the other, cutting off more of its vines but burning it badly enough that it shrieks and backs up, flames withering it much more strongly than she anticipated. When it finally falls, the body looks almost like a cooked vegetable, hardly alive..
For a moment the sphinx fears the worst, until a bloom from a nearby flower shows visible signs of healing, proving life yet still exists in it.

That's the last of them, she surveyed the area, but immediately finds herself having to backtracks on that, as some of the bodies seem to shift and stir. Or.. maybe not quite.
We either fight them awake or unconscious, the equillion leers at her, And I'd rather fight them when they're down.
We only need to keep them down, we don't have to kill..
But the equillion had already walked over to the vinecreeper who stirred, and rose up to bring her hooves down on it, despite the mammalian's protests. She wished she could say she was confused as to why the equillion continued to stubbornly resist the idea.. but their bond was extensive enough that even without telling, she knew - the equillion was merely protecting her. Perhaps even seeing it as protecting her from herself.
The vinecreeper's form slowly settled, completely still and untouched by the bloom, but the bramber was once more stirring, so the sphinx tightened her jaw and guided the equillion over to it, before jumping down and making a quick stab with the wrist-blade.
The bramber twitched in pain, but remained unconscious for a while longer.

With no-one immediately stirring, the field was theirs. The battle wasn't quite 'won' yet so much as temporarily swung in their heavy favour, but with all the plant beasts either incapacitated or no longer living, there shouldn't be any issues with completing their objective.
The sphinx looked to one of the fungal beasts for several seconds, at the way the blooms stitched its wounds bit by bit. Soon it would stir, probably the first of the ones still remaining alive. They should be long gone before any of that happens, but it will take time to retrieve the flowers, assuming those even were the ones they were looking for..
And if this was all for some flowers that weren't even the ones they needed? Darky wasn't sure if she was quite ready to grapple with the implications of such a scenario, as she had her hands full handling even this one.. Though she didn't look it, she felt worn and tired, every bit drained even as her wounds had largely closed.

Eventually, she sighed, and turned to the equillion, gripping her reigns to make her face her, Alright, look. Yes.. You're right. We do need to keep them down, and the easier way to do that is to take them out to begin with. And I want you to keep an eye on these bodies.. If any start to stir, make sure they remain down.
The equillion's head rose slightly, a sense of appreciation rising, though no small amount of satisfaction at being told her point was true. Before that could have got any further, however, the sphinx gently pulled on the reigns to bring her head level to her eyes again, BUT, and I do mean this very insistently.. We. Don't. Kill. Not unless we have to, not unless there's no other choice, but even then, it shouldn't feel good, and it shouldn't be the first option.
As Nightmare stared at her, the undead mind having quite a few things to say about life and death, there was an understanding, though.

More-so it was likely the tainted mind who held little regard for the value of life, particularly any that didn't include her own. Over time that gradually began to include those she considered her own as well, but otherwise didn't extend further than that.
So she didn't understand why anyone outside that would require such considerations. But she did understand it was important to the mammalian.. Contrary to popular belief (and many rumours regarding her) those two thoughts weren't mutually exclusive. ..Fine. I won't kill.. she finally agreed, radiating an immense aura of annoyance as she did. To prove the point, her back hoof rose and smacked the fungus nearby, who had begun to stir. The hit could certainly knock something around in a person's body, but it wasn't even close to the same brutality that she had displayed so far.
Thank you, the sphinx smiled tiredly, gently bumping her helmet against her bridle.

With the equillion keeping watch of the unconscious ones, the sphinx headed over to the boulders, gently praying to the spirits that it was the right place and the right flower. The soft glow from within the hollow of the rocks led her to the actual plant within, and though it took some discerning and comparing to the drawing she had on hand (for the drawing was pretty accurate, but a little stylized, like something out of an alchemy book rather than botany), eventually the consensus was that it did match, much to her relief.
Carefully, she harvested some of the blooms and wrapped them up in her scarf, as to avoid them getting squished or flatted in a bag or pouch, trying it up in a loose knot, she took the bundle and walked back out of the hollow, to see the equillion rather angrily back-hoof another of the fungus creatures.
At her questioning look, the equillion snorted, somewhat defensively, It was making moves.

Do we have the stupid thing we needed to her? the equillion followed up to the self-defence, as the sphinx returned to her side.
We do, with plenty petals to go around. Whatever that man's looking to make of it, it should cover all his needs, the sphinx hoisted herself back into the saddle, affixing the bundle to her belt as to keep her hands free. And I hope that whatever it is, it's worth.. all this. Her eyes go over the field of battle, at the smattering of green ooze, black spores, and even her own blood and the equillion's.. Well, not quite blood, as she no longer had any. But some form of ooze or another.
C'mon, let's get out of here before they really do wake up.. she pulled the reigns and the equillion turned, beginning that much shorter, but certainly more arduous trek back out of the garden, both rider and mount battle-weary.
And behind them, the blooms softy continued to sweetly, innocently, still knit the wounded back together.
