It was a long walk to the outskirts of the city, and Alma had left all of her beasts at home that day. Rare was the shopkeeper that allowed even the most mild-mannered and well-trained beast to wander near their wares, but Alma would have left them all at the kennel even had the particular shop she planned to visit encouraged it.
Simply put, she was tired. An attempt to speak to a mage accused of filching mind crystals from a stall had left her blinded and suffering through burning, liquid pain as she clawed at her helm until unconsciousness kindly claimed her, and her partner at the time managed to subdue the mage with his PHIL before dragging her back to one of the tamed mages who served as Sentinel healers. She was in no mood to deal with Mouse and his insane aggression towards everything that moved, and quite a few things that didn't, and even dealing her decently trained mount would have been a colossal effort beyond her.
But she dragged herself to the outskirts, smelling like soap and disinfectant, hands wandering up to touch her old scars as if to check that her face was not runny like an over-easy egg, yanking her hands back to her sides whenever she noticed. She nearly passed by the cabin, eyes squinting at the too-bright neon sign as she came to a stop.
With a deep breath, she straightened up, double checked that the card had not somehow slipped out of her pockets on the way over, and walked in with a bright smile at odds with the bags under her eyes. She nodded enthusiastically at the shopkeeper's greeting, and said, "Howdy. I was hoping to purchase roughly a thousand five hundred credits worth of credit vouchers." She held out the card.
