It was another one of those days where Silver wandered about not really knowing what they wanted to do. While thinking about where they wanted to go next, they remembered that the quest board wasn’t too far from where they were. A quest was a perfect thing for them at that moment, actually - it gave them the ability to be productive without the need to decide for themselves what to do. Since Silver was already not too keen on making decisions, they reached out and grabbed a quest posting at random. It was a relatively simple one, written in a hurry. All they had to do was go into someone’s garden and get rid of some pests. That seemed almost too easy, but they might as well give it a try. “Alright then, let’s go,” Silver said, looking back at Gen. He had been standing nearby, close enough to keep watch over Silver, but not so close that he scared anyone off. [140.15, 36.2] Quest #1 - First Completion

He quickly trotted over to them and pressed his nose into their chest, signaling that he was there to listen. Silver scratched behind his ears and pondered which direction they would have to head to get to the garden described in the note. They didn’t have a great sense of direction, but they thought they knew where to go.
“Up,” Silver said, causing Gen to bow so they could hop up onto his back. They leaned into his fur, allowing him to mostly take the lead, so long as he headed in more-or-less the right direction, with a gentle nudge when he didn't. It didn’t take the two of them long to arrive at the plot they were meant to tend.
“It says the garden is full of pests…” Silver mused aloud. They slid off Gen’s back so they could get a better look at the plant life growing wild all around them.

"I wonder what that means," they said. Around here 'pests' could be anything from slugs to living plant monsters to fire breathing lizards the size of horses. They didn't see anything right away which probably meant it wasn't a huge magical monster, but they could always be wrong.
“Stay alert,” Silver said. They stepped into the foliage of the garden with Gen following closely behind them, his ears twitching with every sound, no matter how faint.
As Silver leaned down to inspect a flower they liked the look of, Gen emitted a low rumbling growl. The warning growl made them jump up and whirl around to see what Gen was grumbling at. They knew his various grunts and growls well enough to know that he had found something worth mentioning, but didn’t feel threatened by it.
“Oh!” Silver squeaked out as they saw what had likely gotten Gen’s attention just before.

It was a fuzzy ball of some kind. They couldn’t actually tell what kind of creature it was, but it did seem to be alive. It reminded them of a housecat that was curled up to sleep, but without any of the defining features like ears or a tail.
Against their better judgment, they reached out to touch the little creature. Gen stood firm, eyes fixated on the fuzzy circle which could still yet pose a threat. Silver pulled their hand back fairly quickly upon realizing that the fuzz wasn’t soft, but rather stiff and wiry. It was like trying to pet a hairbrush.
As Silver was trying to puzzle out what the heck the odd creature actually was, they heard Gen grumble again, this time at something else. They turned to look, just in case it was dangerous, and they found another weirdly wiry fluffy… thing. It was stretched out longways, like an eclair as opposed to the other one’s croissant.
“Gen!” Silver said excitedly. “I think… I think it’s a caterpillar.”

Gen let out a soft snort but otherwise didn’t seem to have an opinion about the odd fuzzy creature. Silver smiled, realizing that they had figured it all out. The ‘pests’ the quest giver had been panicking about were huge caterpillars - odd, and certainly hungry, but not that much of a threat. They sighed with relief and quickly came up with a plan to fix the situation.
“Okay bud, help me find ‘em,” Silver said as they grabbed a caterpillar and held it out for Gen to sniff. They quickly suspended a tattered old tarp they had found nearby so that it could hold the caterpillars. By the time they had dropped the first one in, Gen was pointing at another with his nose. Perfect.
The two of them went throughout the whole garden, grabbing as many big fuzzy caterpillars as they could and setting them on the tarp. Now and then, one would get brave and try to make a run for it, and Silver had to chase them down and put them back with the others. After entirely too many escape attempts, they finally felt like they had them all. If they didn’t, well, they sure had put in a good effort, anyway.
